Canada's Erin Brooks named rookie of the year on World Surf League Championship Tour
The only women's rookie to make the mid-season cut, Brooks finished her debut season ranked eighth in the world.
The 18-year-old is the first Canadian to qualify for the tour, Brooks debuted with high expectations, elevated by a victory in her first-ever World Surf League appearance as a wild card in the final event of the 2024 season in Fiji.
Brooks rose to the top of the strong rookie pack and kept herself in contention for the Final 5 right up until the final qualifying event in Tahiti.
Her three semifinal appearances this season all came at notoriously difficult-to-read, shifting sand-bottom breaks, including Supertubos, Portugal, Burleigh Heads, Australia, and Saquarema, Brazil.
The standout moment of Brooks's season was the quarterfinals of the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro, where her hyper-critical backhand earned the second-highest heat total of the women's season, 17.76 (out of a possible 20), to defeat eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia.
Brooks was born in Texas and grew up in Hawaii but has Canadian ties through her American-born father Jeff, who is a dual American-Canadian citizen, and her grandfather who was born and raised in Montreal.
Brooks's citizenship bid was initially turned down but Immigration Minister Marc Miller had a change of heart in January 2024 after a ruling by Ontario's Superior Court of Justice that it is unconstitutional for Canada to deny automatic citizenship to the children of foreign-born Canadians who grew up abroad.

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation players can now bet on live horse races across Ontario. Proline will be accepting bets for the Plate, which goes Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack. Bettors can access Woodbine Entertainment Group's horse racing wagering product through and the OLG app. OLG becomes the first Canadian provincial lottery and gaming agency to provide access to a horse racing wagering product to its digital players. Through WEG's product -- which is powered by HPIbet -- players on and the OLG app can bet on live races around the world and at Ontario tracks. Proline joins bet365 as the only operators in Ontario's regulated sports-betting market to include horse racing in its products. Daulton Varsho is known to rob opposing players of hits with his stellar play in the outfield, but it was the Gold Glover who fell victim to a bit of locker-room theft. Article content Article content 'He came up to me and was like, 'Hey, like I'm not going to take 25, I'm going to take this number,'' Varsho said, adding that he told Santander, 'If you want it, like you can take it, but obviously we'll figure out something for it.' Article content Article content 'The next day, he had his press conference, he's like, 'Hey, I'm taking your number.' I was like, 'Oh … OK,'' Varsho explained. Article content Caught off guard by the situation, Varsho told him, 'OK, like I guess I'll take No. 5.' Article content Varsho did share that Santander has been asking him since then what the outfielder would like in return for the number. Article content 'He got me something the week before I got back (from injury). He was down in Florida, and he said he got me something,' Varsho said. 'I don't know what it is yet, but we'll see.' Named for a pizza place in Minnesota, the son of Collected already has three stakes wins to his credit, including both the Woodstock and Marine Stakes this season. Article content 'I thought his effort in the Marine was outstanding,' Attard said. 'He was given a great ride and pounced at the perfect time.' Article content Sandwiched between his good efforts are some poor ones, so Attard hopes Mansetti's 'good race. bad race' trends are a thing of the past. Article content Faber, on the other hand, comes into the race looking to snap an eight-race losing skid. After winning his debut last year, the son of Improbable was not close in three stakes tries and has spent this season in the optional claiming ranks. Article content 'There's no doubt at all that he's a trier,' Attard said of the horse named after Minnesota Wild defenceman Brock Faber. 'He's always been a game horse with ability. The hope is that he can take all his strengths and come up big in the Plate.'
