Warren Buffett Buys a Beaten Down Healthcare Stock: Should You Follow?

Warren Buffett has struck again – this time in healthcare's rubble. Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.B) recently disclosed a five million share position in United Healthcare Group (NYSE: UNH), the nation's largest health insurer. The timing is quintessentially Buffett. UNH shares have plummeted more than 50% from their all-time highs, battered by regulatory pressures and industry headwinds. While most investors flee the carnage, the Oracle of Omaha is doing what he does best – hunting for value in the wreckage. But as with everything Buffett does, context matters. Putting Things in Perspective The United Healthcare position is estimated to be worth around US$1.6 billion based on Berkshire's five million share purchase. That's a sizable sum of money by any measure. Here's what you need to know: Berkshire Hathaway's stock portfolio is worth close to US$295 billion. Therefore, the UNH position is less than 0.6% of the company's overall stock holdings. In contrast, Berkshire's largest position is actually Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), valued at US$65 billion – representing more than a fifth of the total stock portfolio. Put simply, while the United Healthcare investment grabbed headlines, it wouldn't be moving Berkshire's needle anytime soon. Beyond that, there's a crucial question: did Buffett actually make this call? The Real Decision Makers Every Berkshire Hathaway stock purchase gets dissected as if it came straight from Warren Buffett himself. But the Oracle doesn't fly solo anymore. Berkshire brought on Todd Combs in 2010, followed by Ted Weschler in 2012. Both serve as investment managers with significant autonomy. Initially, Buffett allocated US$2 billion to each manager. By 2017, that figure had quintrupled to US$10 billion per person. Given this structure, the US$1.6 billion UNH bet could be from either Combs or Weschler – not Buffett himself. Get Smart: Look before you leap Context matters when it comes to investing. If you jump in and buy shares without understanding the full picture, you could get hurt in the process. For Berkshire, even if the UnitedHealth investment doesn't work out, you won't see the company sweating over a position worth less than 0.6%. Does the same apply to you? That's food for thought if you decide to pull the trigger. Dive into the future of technology with our newest FREE report, 'The Rise of Titans.' Rupee slips; S&P upgrade lends a lifeline ahead of Trump-Putin meet

By Ashwin Manikandan and Nimesh Vora MUMBAI (Reuters) - The Indian rupee declined on Thursday with traders treading lightly ahead of the Trump-Putin summit, although S&P's upgrade offered a silver lining. The rupee closed at 87.5500 against the U.S. dollar, softer than Wednesday's close of 87.4400, navigating a choppy session that saw it swing between 87.39 and 87.67. With the focus squarely on the Trump-Putin meet, the S&P's upgrade of India offered a boost to the local currency right when it was grappling with midday pressure. S&P noted that India's robust external position is a key credit strength. It highlighted that current account deficits are likely to remain small over the next few years, while domestic demand stabilises and a weaker rupee boosts competitiveness. The agency further pointed to the rupee's active trading status, noting it accounts for more than 1% of global foreign exchange turnover. "In the shorter term, we may see some relief on the ratings upgrade, but the rupee is still not out of the woods as trade uncertainties persist and broad economic indicators are still weak," said Dilip Parmar, currency analyst at HDFC Securities. The Trump-Putin meeting to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war holds added significance for the rupee. The U.S. president has criticised India's purchase of Russian oil and imposed an extra 25% tariff on its goods effective August 27, doubling the rate to 50% - the highest U.S. tariff on a country alongside Brazil. The currency unit touched 87.8850 last week after Trump's tariffs salvo, with the Reserve Bank of India stepping in to prevent the rupee from breaching the all-time low of 87.95 - a level bankers believe the central bank will continue to defend. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar index was up 0.1% at 97.835 at 1550 IST.

Goldman Sachs keeps buy on USL with Rs 1,575 target, says long-term tailwinds intact

By Markets Desk Published on August 18, 2025, 08:22 IST Goldman Sachs has maintained its buy call on United Spirits Limited (USL) with a target price of ₹1,575 after the company delivered a first-quarter performance ahead of topline estimates. The brokerage noted that volume growth was muted when adjusted for the impact of Andhra Pradesh, but said the overall showing was encouraging given the operating environment. Goldman Sachs expects structural benefits from the UK-India free trade agreement to begin accruing from the first quarter of FY27, potentially providing tailwinds for both growth and margins. It has, however, trimmed FY26–28 earnings per share estimates by 2–4% to reflect near-term pressures. Despite the cut, the brokerage remains constructive on USL's medium-term outlook, citing strong premiumisation trends and the company's ability to expand margins through disciplined cost control.
