Barrick Mining Gains 19% in 3 Months: Is it the Right Time to Buy?
Barrick has outperformed the Zacks Mining – Gold industry's 15.1% increase, and has topped the S&P 500's rise of 12.9% in the past three months. Among its gold mining peers, Newmont Corporation NEM, Kinross Gold Corporation KGC and Agnico Eagle Mines Limited AEM have racked up gains of 28%, 24.6% and 15.7%, respectively, over the same period.
Newmont's gains are partly aided by the strong production performance of its managed Tier 1 portfolio. Kinross Gold's impressive performance has been driven by its strong operational execution, advancement of its growth strategy and consistent strong performance of its two biggest assets — Tasiast and Paracatu. Agnico Eagle's gains have been driven by its forecast-topping earnings performance, higher realized prices and strong production.
B's 3-month Price Performance
The B stock broke out above its 50-day simple moving average (SMA) on May 30, 2025. Barrick is also currently trading above its 200-day SMA, suggesting a long-term uptrend. The 50-day SMA is reading higher than the 200-day SMA since the golden crossover on April 9, 2025, indicating a bullish trend.
B Trades Above 50-Day SMA
Let's take a look at Barrick's fundamentals to better analyze how to play the stock.
Key Projects to Underpin Production Growth for Barrick
Barrick is well-placed to benefit from the progress in key growth projects, which should significantly contribute to its production. Its major gold and copper growth projects, including Goldrush, the Pueblo Viejo plant expansion and mine life extension, Fourmile, Lumwana Super Pit and Reko Diq, are underway. These projects are advancing on schedule and within budget, laying the groundwork for the next generation of profitable production.
The Goldrush mine is ramping up to the targeted 400,000 ounces of production per annum by 2028. Bordering Goldrush is the 100% Barrick-owned Fourmile, which is yielding grades double those of Goldrush and is anticipated to become another Tier One mine. The project has progressed to a prefeasibility study on the back of a successful drilling program. The Reko Diq copper-gold project in Pakistan is designed to produce 460,000 tons of copper and 520,000 ounces of gold annually in its second development phase. The first production is expected by the end of 2028.
Also, the $2 billion Super Pit Expansion Project at its Lumwana mine is progressing steadily, accelerating its shift into a Tier One copper mine. Barrick recently stated that the Lumwana expansion is the result of a significant turnaround, transforming the mine from an underperforming asset into a vital part of both its global copper portfolio and Zambia's long-term development strategy.
Higher Gold Prices to Drive B's Margins and Cash Flow
Gold prices have rallied roughly 29% this year, largely attributable to aggressive trade policies, including sweeping new import tariffs announced by President Donald Trump that have intensified global trade tensions and heightened investor anxiety. Also, central banks worldwide have been accumulating gold reserves, led by risks arising from Trump's policies.
Gold prices shot up to a record high of $3,500 per ounce on April 22. While gold prices have fallen from their April 2025 high, they remain favorable, aided by geopolitical tensions, and are currently hovering near the $3,400 per ounce level. Increased purchases by central banks and geopolitical tensions are factors expected to help the yellow metal sustain the rally. Higher gold prices should translate into strong profit margins and free cash flow generation for Barrick.
Barrick's Strong Liquidity & Attractive Dividend Bode Well
Barrick has a solid liquidity position and generates healthy cash flows, positioning it well to take advantage of attractive development, exploration and acquisition opportunities, drive shareholder value and reduce debt. At the end of first-quarter 2025, Barrick's cash and cash equivalents were around $4.1 billion. It generated strong operating cash flows of roughly $1.2 billion in the quarter, up 59% year over year. Free cash flow surged to around $375 million in the first quarter from $32 million in the prior-year quarter. Barrick returned $1.2 billion to its shareholders in 2024 through dividends and repurchases. Barrick's board, in February 2025, authorized a new program for the buyback of up to $1 billion of its outstanding common shares. It repurchased shares worth $143 million under this program during the first quarter.
Barrick offers a dividend yield of 1.8% at the current stock price. Its payout ratio is 28% (a ratio below 60% is a good indicator that the dividend will be sustainable), with a five-year annualized dividend growth rate of roughly 3%.
Barrick's Earnings Estimates Northbound
Earnings estimates for Barrick have been revised upward over the past 60 days. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 and 2026 has been revised higher over the same time frame.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for B's 2025 and 2026 earnings implies a year-over-year rise of 55.6% and 24.1%, respectively.
A Look at Barrick Stock's Valuation
B stock is currently trading at a forward price/earnings of 10.12X, a roughly 24.8% discount to the industry's average of 13.45X. It also has a Value Score of A. Barrick is also trading at a discount to Newmont, Agnico Eagle and Kinross Gold.
B's P/E F12M Vs. Industry, NEM, AEM & KGC
How Should Investors Play the B Stock?
Barrick presents a compelling investment case with a strong pipeline of growth projects, solid financials, rallying gold prices and a healthy growth trajectory. Its actions to boost production, rising earnings estimates, attractive valuation and a safe dividend yield paint a promising picture. Higher gold prices should boost its profitability and drive cash flow generation. B's cheap valuation also offers an attractive entry point. Investors seeking exposure to the gold mining sector, particularly in a market environment that favors gold as a safe-haven asset, may find this Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) stock a worthwhile addition as it has upbeat growth prospects.

Nova Scotia rejects Halifax's updates to regional plan
The Nova Scotia government has rejected Halifax's updates to its regional plan, forcing the municipality to go back to the drawing board. The regional plan, which was originally adopted in 2006, was the first guide for growth in Halifax following the amalgamation of the municipality. The plan established policy until 2031, with reviews scheduled every five years. The plan was readopted in 2014 following a review in 2011, and another review started in 2020. Last June, Halifax council adopted a motion to repeal the 2014 regional plan and adopt a 2025 strategy with related amendments. The updated regional plan is subject to provincial approval, according to the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter. The municipality says the minister of Municipal Affairs sent them a letter on Friday saying they could not accept the updates. 'While we were encouraged to see some proposals that would work towards improving the housing situation in the region, left as-is, they didn't go far enough,' the letter reads. 'Beyond that, the document included many proposals that appear intentionally designed to impede housing. 'This is unfortunate and, as a result after careful consideration and a thorough review, I simply cannot accept the Plan as submitted and must therefore refuse to approve the Plan.' The municipality says they did not expect the province's rejection of the updates, claiming they have been working with provincial staff to address their feedback. The rejection means the 2014 regional plan, which was last amended in May, is still in effect. 'Over the coming weeks, municipal staff will re-engage with the province to determine the next steps on the planning process and ensure the Regional Plan is updated in a way that aligns with provincial interests and fulfills the municipality's obligations under existing legislation,' a news release from the municipality says. Advanced Auto Parts and Birkenstock are part of Zacks Earnings Preview
For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – August 11, 2025 – releases the list of companies likely to issue earnings surprises. This week's list includes Advanced Auto Parts AAP and Birkenstock BIRK. 3 Key Takeaways from Q2 Earnings Season As we head into the final phase of the Q2 earnings season, we can say with complete confidence that the overall earnings picture remains strong and resilient. Even more importantly, the outlook for the current and coming quarters has clearly started improving, with the favorable revisions trend particularly notable for the Tech sector. While we still have a few key Tech sector players among the 9% of S&P 500 members that are still to report results, the primary focus of the still-to-come reports will be on the retail space. We have a couple of retail-centric companies, such as Advanced Auto Parts and Birkenstock on deck to report this week, but the bulk of the sector results will start coming out the following week. Here are the three key takeaways from the Q2 earnings season. First, we saw an above-average proportion of companies beat Q2 EPS and revenue estimates, with the beats percentage particularly notable on the revenues side. Through Friday, August 8 th, we have seen Q2 results from 455 S&P 500 members, or 91% of the index's total membership. Total earnings for these companies are up +11.6% from the same period last year on +5.9% revenue growth, with 80.4% beating EPS estimates and 79.1% beating revenue estimates. This is a notably better performance relative to what we have seen from this group of index members in other recent periods. Second, we are on track for a new all-time quarterly record for the aggregate Q2 earnings total for the S&P 500 index, surpassing the previous record set in 2024 Q4. Looking at Q2 as a whole, combining the actual results from the 455 index members that have reported already with estimates for the still-to-come 45 companies, total S&P 500 earnings are expected to be up +12.1% from the same period last year on +6.2% higher revenues. The Q2 earnings growth rate improves to +13.9% when the Energy sector's drag is removed from the results and weakens to +8.5% when the Tech sector's substantial contribution is excluded from the aggregate numbers. The aggregate dollar total for Q2 is a new all-time quarterly record. Aggregate earnings are on track to reach $582 billion, up from $556.2 billion in the preceding period, $519.3 billion in the year-earlier quarter, and the previous record of $573.6 billion in 2024 Q4. Third, the revisions trend has turned positive, with the trend particularly notable for the Tech sector. For the current period (2025 Q3), the expectation today is for earnings growth of +5.1% for the S&P 500 index on +5.6% higher revenues. Since the start of July, Q3 estimates have increased for 6 of the 16 Zacks sectors, with the biggest gains for the Tech, Finance, Energy, and Retail sectors. On the negative side, Q3 estimates have declined for the remaining 10 sectors since the start of the period, with the biggest declines for the Medical, Transportation, Basic Materials, Construction, and Auto sectors. For the Tech sector, Q3 earnings are currently expected to be up +10.4% from the same period last year on +11.5% higher revenues. The Earnings Big Picture In terms of S&P 500 index 'EPS', these growth rates approximate to $257.35 for 2025 and $289.35 for 2026.
