Man shot to death on Queens block checked in at favorite barbershop day before

Yahoo2 days ago
A man shot to death on a bucolic Queens block was nicknamed 'Antz' because of his tendency to pop up everywhere unexpectedly, brokenhearted friends said Sunday.
Dwayne Belfield, 41, was a regular customer since childhood at Exclusive Styles barber shop on Church Ave. in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
'He was here the day before. He would come in and check up on us,' said barber Neil Gadsby. 'The barbers here knew him since he was a kid,'
'He had dreads so he would get a low taper on the sides,' added Gadsby, 56. 'It was sharp, clean. He would stay fresh.'
Gadsby explained how Belfied got his colorful nickname.
'According to him, ants be everywhere. They small, they bite hard, they be everywhere. When you think he's not, he's there,' Gadsby said. 'He moves around a lot, checking up on friends.'
Gadsby doesn't know what drew Belfied to Liverpool St. near Glassboro Ave. in South Jamaica, where he was shot in the chest about 8:15 a.m. Saturday.
Video obtained by ABC Channel 7 Eyewitness News shows a dark-colored BMW slow down at the intersection as the killer unleashes a hail of bullets from the back seat before the luxury car speeds off. Gadsby ran several feet before collapsing on the sidewalk.
'The details on how it happened was bizarre,' Gadsby said. 'It was unbelievable. We came into work at 8 and around 8:30 people started to call real quick. News traveled quick, they were calling. We were shocked … Reality started to kick in. It's sad.'
Medics rushed Belfied to Jamaica Hospital, where he died a short time later. The victim was from Guyana and made a living doing body work on cars.
'He used to play drums, excellent drummer,' Gadsby said. 'He would come here and would keep good energy, inspirational words, good energy. Talk about life, sports, women, not too much negativity.'
'He's just a serious brother, quick to defend himself and others,' he added. 'He is strong, brave, always willing to defend his friends. No-nonsense man,'
On Sunday morning a little over a mile from the barber shop, a 65-year-old woman was shot in the left buttocks by a shooter who fled in a black BMW.
'It was eight shots,' a neighbor said. 'They were doing this 10 in the morning in broad daylight on a Sunday morning.'
'I went over there to help her. She wasn't bleeding — it seemed like the bullet ricocheted off her,' he added. 'She was crying and me and this other man tried helping her up. I told her she's going to be fine, there's no blood. But I can't imagine the mental pain that woman was in.'
Medics rushed the victim from the scene at Foster and Brooklyn Aves. in Flatbush to Kings County Hospital after she was shot about 10:05 a.m. She is expected to recover.
'God was covering that lady,' the neighbor said. 'She had a shopping cart. She was going to the store, just going on about her business, and then that happens.'
It was not immediately clear if she was the intended target, cops said.
'There was no police here and there's always police here parked up on the corner,' said the neighbor. 'They wouldn't have done this if there was a cop car posted up … Why do you all remove the police presence? Your presence alone is a deterrent.'
'It was a woman we knew,' said another neighbor on the block. 'We call her mother. She lives down the block.'
There was no immediate indication the shooting that wounded the woman has any connection to Belfield's slaying a day earlier.
No arrests have been made in either shooting.
New York City saw its fewest number of shooting victims in three decades — and the second-lowest murder rate — in the first half of 2025, NYPD officials said earlier this month.
There were 397 people shot in the first six months of the year citywide, 125 fewer victims than in the first half of last year, a 24% drop, NYPD statistics show.
There were 146 homicides citywide from January to June, 44 fewer than in the first six months of 2024 a 23% drop.

North Texas mom seeks help to identify "Peeping Tom" seen at teen daughter's window

An East Plano mom said a "Peeping Tom" has shown up at her teenage daughter's window at least 10 times over the past few months. She's gone to the police and is now asking for the public's help in identifying him. Nedra Bounds said that at first, it was a man's face suddenly appearing in her 13-year-old daughter's window, then he started to linger. "He'll come, he's stumbling drunk," she said. "He's clearly at this point targeting her." Determined to protect her daughter, she installed blackout curtains, floodlights, and additional security cameras, hoping it would scare him off. "We've made about four to five phone calls to police at this point, and it just keeps escalating," she said. Bounds said the man exposed himself. "That's really the most concerning thing is that is that he's been caught with his pants down, he's seeking her window," she said. "She's a little girl. She doesn't want to think about those things." Bounds posted a picture of the man on social media, hoping someone would be able to identify him. She said the response has been overwhelming. "Everybody is just, 'I'll give you a camera,'" she said. "'Can I bring you a camera?' 'I'll sit outside your house.'" Plano police confirm they're investigating and detectives are reviewing the videos of the man.

Riverside County nurse arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting unconscious patient

A Riverside County nurse has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a patient while they were unconscious, according to authorities. Deputies with the Riverside Sheriff's Special Victims Unit received reports of a hospital employee who "was having inappropriate contact with an unconscious patient," said a press release from the department. "During the course of the investigation, the suspect was identified as Lauro Gonzales Jr., a 40-year-old resident of Lake Elsinore," the release said. "Investigators learned that Gonzales was employed as a nurse by multiple hospitals within Riverside County." Gonzales was arrested on Tuesday when investigators conducted a traffic stop on I-15 near Temescal Canyon Road, deputies said. He was booked for sexual penetration of an unconscious person after they served a search warrant at his home, where they said they collected additional evidence. Due to the nature of the crime, investigators believe that there may be additional victims. Anyone who knows more or believes they are a victim is asked to contact RSO at (951) 955-1718 or (951) 776-1099.

Grim theory after outback killer's death

The lead investigator in the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio said she was 'not surprised but disappointed' Bradley John Murdoch – who died from cancer overnight – never revealed the location of his victim's remains. Murdoch, who was serving a life sentence for the backpacker's murder in 2001, was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer in 2019. He was transferred from the Alice Springs Correctional Centre to palliative care earlier this year. He died overnight at Alice Springs Hospital, aged 67. Speaking to ABC Radio on Wednesday morning, former Northern Territory police officer Colleen Gwynne – who led the investigation into the murder – said she was mourning the death of the British backpacker. 'You mourn Peter today,' she told the station. 'Bradley's prolonged refusal to co-operate with police and provide the information that we needed to locate Peter's remains (resulted) in … prolonged family agony by the Falconio family. 'It's a sad day for those reasons.' Ms Gwynne said she 'pretty much always said' Murdoch wouldn't reveal the whereabouts of Mr Falconio's remains, as it aligned with the killer's 'narcissistic' personality. 'The night that Joanne (Mr Falconio's girlfriend Joanne Lees) escaped and we lost Peter, he (Murdoch) lost control. And as a result of that, he felt wronged, and he felt angry,' she said. Ms Gwynne said Murdoch used his silence 'to gain some control' and to 'have that power over the Falconio family by not disclosing any details of what he did with Peter to allow us to narrow that search'. Murdoch was convicted of murdering Mr Falconio on July 14, 2001. He was travelling with his girlfriend Joanne Lees in a Kombi van along the Sturt Highway, north of Barrow Creek between Darwin and Alice Springs, when another car stopped alongside them and motioned to them to pull over. When the Kombi van pulled over, Murdoch shot Mr Falconio in the head. Murdoch then tried to kidnap Ms Lees, pulling her out of the van and binding her wrists with cable ties before forcing her in the back of his vehicle. While Murdoch went back to his vehicle, Ms Lees managed to escape and hid in the bushes for several hours before she flagged down another driver. Mr Falconio's body has never been found. Murdoch was found guilty of murder in December 2005 and was sentenced to life in jail with a non-parole period of 28 years. He maintained his innocence throughout the trial and twice tried to overturn the convictions, but both attempts were unsuccessful. Murdoch would have been eligible for parole in 2032, but the NT's introduction of 'no body, no parole' laws in 2016 meant he would only have been released if he revealed the location of Mr Falconio's body. Last month, the NT Police Force (NTPF) announced a renewed appeal and $500,000 reward for anyone who provided information leading to the recovery of Mr Falconio's remains. Acting Commissioner Mark Grieve said despite the years that passed, it was 'never too late to reach out and at least start that conversation'. In a statement released on Wednesday morning, NTPF said it remained committed to 'resolving this final piece of the investigation'. 'It is deeply regrettable that Murdoch has died without, as far as we are aware, ever disclosing the location of Peter Falconio's remains,' the statement read. 'His silence has denied the Falconio family the closure they have so long deserved. 'Our thoughts are with the Falconio family in the United Kingdom whose grief continues. 'We continue to appeal to anyone who may have information that could lead us to Peter Falconio's remains to come forward, no matter how small the detail may seem.'
