From MSNBC to ‘MS NOW': Legacy of Microsoft's news experiment echoes in network's new name
The New York Daily News business section previews the launch of the MSNBC cable channel, a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC, on Monday, July 15, 1996. Who'd have thought MS would outlast NBC? Except it's not the MS it once was. A plan to rebrand the MSNBC cable channel to 'MS NOW,' announced Monday, is the latest twist in a corporate media saga that started nearly three decades ago, when Microsoft and NBC launched a joint venture that combined the tech giant's internet ambitions with the TV network's news pedigree. Microsoft cut ties long ago. It dropped its stake in the MSNBC cable channel to 18% in 2005 and fully exited two years later, when NBC acquired the remaining shares. It divested from the online side in 2012, although — later — still operated a newsroom in the Seattle region for a while after that. Despite the split, the MS in MSNBC has lingered as a reminder of that 1996 partnership — and it will continue to live on in the new name, albeit with a different meaning. 'MS NOW' stands for 'My Source for News, Opinion and the World.' The new MS Now logo. (Versant Image) The rebrand results from MSNBC's spinoff from NBCUniversal, part of a $7 billion restructuring of Comcast's cable assets. It's meant to eliminate confusion with NBC News and give the cable network a distinct identity as it enters its next phase under Versant, the new umbrella for former NBCU cable networks. In the meantime, Microsoft has taken a different path in media. The company's Search and News Advertising business — including Bing, Microsoft Start, and integrations with its Edge browser and Copilot AI assistant — generated $13.9 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025, nearly 5% of Microsoft's total revenue of $282 billion. Of course, that's not exactly on the scale of Google in search and online ads, and it's hardly the next Office or Windows in the scheme of Microsoft's business. But even without a stake in a major media brand, the company has found its own place in the behind-the-scenes infrastructure for digital news and information. And we've still got that MS as a reminder of the past — for NOW, at least.

Microsoft stock target lifted at Truist on cloud and AI growth drivers
-- Truist lifted its price target for Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) shares to $675 from $650 on Monday, citing the company's sustained momentum in cloud and artificial intelligence. The analysts said they are 'confident Microsoft can sustain strong momentum associated with cloud and AI secular growth drivers, while benefiting from a growth-enhancing halo effect across a multitude of MSFT's individual infrastructure, data and app businesses.' Truist told investors that it has also raised its fiscal 2026 and 2027 revenue, operating profit, and cash flow estimates, seeing 'opportunities for solid upside to ours and street estimates.' The firm projects that 'sustained strong cloud growth at scale & growing AI demand capture can lead to at least low teens double-digit rev, profit & CF growth over an extended period, while consistently returning cash via divs/repurchases.' On the cloud side, Truist believes Microsoft is positioned to benefit from 'existing workloads migrating to Azure, digital native businesses scaling their business and benefits from growing number of AI workloads and use cases.' The analysts highlighted what they called 'revenue synergies and force multiplier effects' across Microsoft's portfolio, pointing to Microsoft Fabric, Cosmos DB, PostgreSQL, AI Foundry, Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Defender and Purview. The new $675 price target is based on a long-term discounted cash flow model that assumes an 11.4% revenue CAGR, a 35% terminal free cash flow margin and a 9.6% WACC. Truist said 'premium valuation is justified owing to the company's picks and shovels status in the rapidly evolving AI landscape while sustaining strong commercial bookings, RPO, cloud and Azure growth rates.' MSNBC to change its name to MS NOW and drop the peacock logo
MSNBC is changing its name to MS NOW and dropping its peacock logo as part of the cable channel's spinoff from Comcast's NBC Universal. The new name stands for My Source News Opinion World, according to the company. MSNBC and several other cable channels owned by NBC Universal are spinning off into a new business called Versant, which will also include financial news channel CNBC and entertainment networks such as USA, Oxygen, E! and SYFY. Comcast, the owner of NBC Universal, announced the spinoff in November amid struggling ratings for the cable industry as a whole. MSNBC's name change comes after the network was founded almost 30 years ago through a partnership between Microsoft and NBC, with the shorthand for the tech giant — MS — and NBC's brand forming the channel's name. Changing its name to MS NOW "underscores the brand's mission to serve as the destination for domestic and international breaking news and the best-in-class opinion journalism," Versant CEO Mark Lazarus said in an internal memo. He added, "Most importantly, while the name will be different, the brand's commitment to its audience will not change." NBC's peacock logo will also be dropped from networks that will be part of Versant, including CNBC, which will retain its name, the company said. To be sure, name changes always carry an inherent risk, and MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler said that for employees, it is hard to imagine the network under a different name. "This was not a decision that was made quickly or without significant debate," she said in a memo to staff. "During this time of transition, NBC Universal decided that our brand requires a new, separate identity," she wrote. "This decision now allows us to set our own course and assert our indepedence as we continue to build our own modern newsgathering organization." In preparation for the spinoff, MSNBC has hired more than three-dozen journalists from outlets including Bloomberg, Politico, the Washington Post and CNN, the company said. Some NBC News personalities, like Jacob Soboroff, Vaughn Hillyard, Brandy Zadrozny and Antonia Hylton, have also joined Associated Press contributed to this report.
