Gary Lineker reunites with estranged brother Wayne after 17-year fallout

Gary Lineker reunites with estranged brother Wayne after 17-year fallout

Metro2 days ago

Following a 17-year feud, Gary Lineker and brother Wayne have seemingly reconciled.
The sports pundit, 64, and entrepreneur, 63, are believed to have fallen out amid Gary's marriage to second wife Danielle Bux, which lasted from 2009 to 2016.
But both looked closer than ever as they reunited for Gary's second-oldest son's wedding over the weekend.
Harry, 31, tied the knot with his fiancée Annabelle in Ibiza, where the drinks were flowing and celebrations turned raucous pretty swiftly.
Sharing content to Instagram from the special occasion, Gary was captured downing alcohol from a bottle before it was passed to his younger brother.
Wayne also posted pics alongside his kids, the O Beach owner being a proud father to four children from his first marriage.
As son Freddie towered over him, the dad and son duo posed by the pool, Wayne dressed in white trousers and a beige blazer.
His caption read: 'The boys are ready for the big family wedding today as my nephew @harry_lineker weds the beautiful @bellacfh_ 💍🧡
'My boy @freddie_lineker looking good 🔥'
In a later post, he stood with his arm around daughter Tia, who wore a gold slip dress.
'Princess goals 🧡', he penned sweetly.
Meanwhile, Gary is yet to share any of his own content from the celebrations or reply to Wayne's social media uploads.
As for the history of their so-called feud, it dates back to 2008, when Gary brought Danielle to Ibiza for a family holiday.
Speaking to The Sun in April 2015, Wayne mused: 'In my opinion, Danielle cost me my relationship with my brother.'
'Sadly, Gary is no longer a part of my life,' he confessed.
'They came to Ibiza in August 2008, and it was really awkward. I didn't spark with Danielle, and our relationship was cold.'
It's believed their frequent phone calls and home visits then ceased, with Wayne claiming the frosty atmosphere with Danielle – who 'stayed in her room' on the first day and did not socialise at night – caused the friction.
He says he never had a conversation with her during the trip.
Consequently, Wayne did not attend Gary and Danielle's wedding, despite the sibling being best man at Gary's first wedding to Michelle Cockayne in 1986.
Wayne refused to go because his then-girlfriend of 18 months, Ana Tanaka, was also not invited.
'She was a lovely, polite girl, and not a five-minute girlfriend,' Wayne previously defended.
The club owner claims he has attempted to build bridges over the years, including for Gary's 50th birthday celebrations.
However, they shared a phone call that lasted mere seconds.
'I would love nothing more than him to call me up tomorrow and ask to go to lunch to speak about it, but I don't think it's going to happen,' Wayne said.
Ultimately, Gary and Danielle announced in January 2016 that they were divorcing, the reason given being that Gary did not want more kids.
As for the perspective of the Leicester-born footie star, it was once claimed that he didn't approve of Wayne's lifestyle.
In a 2015 interview, Wayne's old friend and former PR man, Neil Deal, claimed: 'Gary had a bit of a problem with Wayne's party lifestyle.
'He and his brother used to get along well enough, but they were worlds apart.
'And as Gary became more famous in sport and TV, Wayne seemed to become more of a party animal to compensate, and they just grew apart.'
Some of the latest comments from either brother on the matter came from Wayne in 2017, when he suggested they were finally on somewhat better terms.
Speaking to The Sunday Mirror, he revealed they were 'talking' again.
'We are not how we were years and years ago, but we speak more now,' he shared, adding that they were 'slowly getting there'.
'It's important. He's my brother. We were so close. We used to play golf twice a week, go to each other's houses, and speak every day on the phone.'
Nevertheless, Wayne has always been close with Gary's sons George, Harry, Angus, and Tobias, who often fly out to see him in Ibiza, with George specifically visiting 'three times a year'.
'All the boys are fantastic; they are all mad and love a drink, love a girl, and there is nothing wrong with that,' Wayne previously spilled. 'Whereas my boys, believe it or not… Dwayne, my eldest, is like Gary. He is the father of our relationship, not me. More Trending
'My son ends up looking after me. I'll be sitting on the streets of San Antonio at 7am, acting an idiot, and he will come and say, 'Dad, what are you doing?''
Wayne has also insisted he is Gary's 'biggest fan', joking once that he is now 'very good at presenting' after being 'absolutely rubbish' when he first started.
Last month, Gary signed off from hosting Match of the Day one last time, having fronted the BBC highlights show for 26 years and sat comfortably as their highest-paid star with a salary of £1.4million.

Tonight, the show revealed professional rugby player Conor, 25, will take his place in the starting line-up. The Irishman said he's looking for "someone who is really sure of themselves, ambitious, a bit of a go-getter and good craic. I like dark eyes and I don't mind a dominant woman." When it comes to turn offs, he says: "Being too needy, or needing to do everything together. I like someone to be independent and do their own thing and then we come together and do our thing." In his official announcement pic, Conor is flanked by beauties Helena Ford and Megan Clarke. Earlier today, Kyle broke his silence on his exit and said: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' Masked thugs stormed a wake in Stafford and hacked at a dad with a blade in February. Kyle was one of two quizzed but released with no further action. In a video uploaded to Instagram tonight, the aspiring reality star revealed he's still hopeful of having a future on the show. Now in a new video uploaded to Instagram, the aspiring reality star revealed he's still hopeful of having a future on the show. Speaking from inside a house, he said: "I'm not a bad guy, honestly. I'm a normal guy from a normal place. An opportunity arose to find love and I grabbed it with both hands, and it's been taken away from me. "I've seen the support pages and, who knows, maybe I'll get the chance to go on Casa Amor or as a bombshell, go back in and show you who I really am. Show you I'm not a bad guy. We'll see." The Sun has contacted ITV for comment. ITV chiefs' decision to send Ashman home from Majorca plunged the show into chaos ahead of Monday's launch. He has since spoken out about being axed saying: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' Ashman was one of two quizzed but released with no further action. Sources said the channel was unaware of the incident and he was not flagged as part of contestant checks. The victim, 38, nearly lost his arm. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept in for around two weeks. Ashman, who lives in the town, was one of two men to be nicked on suspicion of affray then bailed. Police confirmed that after the matter had been investigated the pair were released with no further action only last month. A source said: 'This was a horrific attack which could have been even worse. 'Ashman may have signed up to one of the biggest shows on TV with this hanging over his head.' It is not suggested that Ashman, whose job involves laying and repairing water pipes, was involved in the attack. Last night he insisted he was not a violent person. Confirming his show exit, an ITV spokesman said: 'For personal reasons, Kyle will not be entering the Love Island Villa as planned.' The mass brawl broke out at The White Eagle Club on February 28. Sources said three balaclava-clad thugs armed with machetes and metal poles stormed the venue and attacked the dad over an alleged £3,000 debt. They attacked him with a blade and left him with a deep gash on his arm — with witnesses wrapping towels over it to stem the bleeding. 6 Ashman described himself as a 'normal guy' Credit: Instagram/@kyleashmantr 6 Kyle has come out to say he is 'not a violent person' Credit: Instagram Pals say he has suffered tendon damage and is unable to drive due to his injuries. Witnesses said the mob made off in a white Vauxhall Astra waiting outside. Around 70 mourners, some elderly and some children, had gathered to pay their respects to local Stanley Reid. Our source continued: 'This seemed to be a targeted attack — they knew who they were looking for and where he was. "People wrapped a towel around the man's injury while waiting for emergency services. Children were taken into a room and locked in there to keep them away from the violence. 'People were screaming and crying in fear. They are nothing but scumbags. They ruined what was a lovely send-off for a good person.' Staffordshire Police said yesterday: 'We were called to a social club on Riverway, Stafford, at 7.40pm on Friday, February 28 following reports that someone had been glassed outside and a fight was taking place. Some of the men involved were wearing masks and were carrying weapons. 'Two men went to hospital after suffering injuries at the scene. Both have since been discharged. 'A man and a woman suffered minor injuries at the scene but did not want any medical treatment. 'Officers have reviewed CCTV footage and have been actively carrying out inquiries to find out more about what happened. 'A 22-year-old man, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of wounding and affray. Another man, also 22 and from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of affray. 'Both were questioned in custody and bailed with conditions while our inquiries continue.' A force spokeswoman later confirmed that both suspects had been released with no further action last month. Ashman said last night: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' A show source said: 'ITV were entirely unaware of Kyle's past and, as he was not charged, it was not flagged as part of Love Island's stringent DBS checks. Suspects released 'It's only right he can now return home to the UK to share his side of the story and therefore bosses took the decision that it was best for him not to enter the villa.' Contestants typically sign up months in advance of the show, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary. The launch episode of last year's summer series was watched by 3.3 million fans. ITV yesterday officially announced the new line-up and released images of contestants, with Ashman showing off his six-pack. Asked about the type of Love Islander he would like to couple up with, Ashman said: 'Someone who is fun, confident and just themselves.' Asked if host Maya Jama would 'hire or fire you based on your flirting skills alone', he replied: 'I'd say I'd be hired. I just go with it, find something to compliment a girl on and go from there.'
