On May 28, a shooting occurred near Tacoma, Washington, injuring seven people
Five victims were taken to the hospital by emergency responders, while three others went on their own
Police are still investigating the incident, unsure of the number of shooters or whether the victims were the intended targetsSeven people were shot and injured in a mass shooting near Tacoma, Washington Wednesday evening.
Lakewood police said there was a gathering of more than 100 people when some kind of dispute broke out between two groups on May 28, which led to the gunfire erupting, police sergeant Charles Porche told the AP.
'Officers arriving at the park found a large crowd that had gathered due to the nice warm weather. The scene was quite hectic as a large number of these people were attempting to flee the park after hearing the shots,' Porche told the News Tribune.
West Pierce Fire & Rescue provided medical care to five of the victims, Porche said, per the outlet. Those five were taken to a local hospital, while three others went to the hospital on their own.
'Unfortunately, there were unintended/uninvolved victims struck during this careless act of violence,' Porche said in a news release, per the AP. 'Detectives will continue to sort through the information gathered to hold those involved accountable for their actions.'
Police said the victims ranged from a 16-year-old girl, who was in stable condition, to a 38-year-old man who was in critical condition, the outlet reported. Three others were in serious condition.
'We've had these couple of days here where the sun finally came out and it's been a gorgeous time for people to get out and enjoy the park, the lake and then you have something like this that happens,' Porche said. 'It is one of the great tragedies, right? You don't want anybody to get shot and then you end up with seven different victims that happen out of this act of violence.'Investigators told the News Tribune that they don't yet know how many shooters were involved or if the victims were intended targets. No arrests have been made, and the shooting remains under investigation.
The shooting comes just days after a separate mass shooting in Philadelphia on Memorial Day, which left two people dead, and nine others injured.

Funeral Remembers Grapevine Lake Victim Ava Moore With Full Military Honors

Ava Moore, the 18-year-old victim of a jet ski on Grapevine Lake, received full military honors at her funeral over the weekend. Moore's funeral took place at The Met Church in Fort Worth at 3:30 p.m. on May 31, according to a statement from Amanda McNew, media manager for Grapevine Police. Since Moore was preparing for the Air Force Academy, as The Dallas Express previously reported, the United States Air Force gave her '[f]ull military honors' outside the church at the end of the service. 'The family has asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of their daughter,' McNew wrote in the statement. 'Ava's loss has been deeply felt throughout our community.' Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne, a Republican, posted on X in honor of Moore. 'Ava Moore's Coming Home memorial was held today along with full military honors,' the congresswoman wrote. 'May she rest in peace and her family be blessed by her wonderful memory.' Kayakers met on Grapevine Lake on May 31 to remember Moore, scattering pedals on the water in her honor. Soon after the tragedy, Moore's family emphasized faith and forgiveness, as The Dallas Express reported. 'This is a difficult time for all involved, but also an opportunity for our beautiful girl to continue to impact our community,' her family said in a statement at the time. 'Out of this tragedy, God will make good, and that only can be accomplished through forgiveness.' While Moore was kayaking on Grapevine Lake during Memorial Day weekend, she was struck and killed by a jet ski allegedly operated by Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez, an illegal alien from Venezuela, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. The man who allegedly helped her flee the scene – committing a hit-and-run in the process – is Maikel Coello Perozo, another illegal alien from Venezuela. Under former President Joe Biden's administration, they unlawfully crossed the border in 2023, and officials captured and then released both of them. Gonzalez and Perozo fled the scene, sparking a multi-day manhunt. As The Dallas Express previously reported, police arrested them May 27 in Dallas. ICE lodged immigration holds with the suspects, who are now 'in removal proceedings.' They were initially held at the Grapevine Police Department but have since been transferred to the Tarrant County Jail. Gonzalez faces a manslaughter charge with a $500,000 bond, according to jail records. Perozo faces a charge of collision involving damage to a vehicle with a $2,500 bond and a charge of hindering apprehension/prosecution with a $750 bond. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott previously suggested the death penalty for the suspects, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. Andrew Mahaleris, Abbott's press secretary, emphasized in an email to The Dallas Express that 'Texans deserve protection from unchecked criminal activity.' 'The State of Texas has no tolerance for heinous criminals who kill Texans,' Mahaleris said in an email. 'The victim's family deserves swift justice, and the criminal illegal immigrants should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.' McNew asked the media to respect Moore's family and their privacy during this difficult time. 'We ask all media outlets to honor that request with care and sensitivity,' she wrote. 'The Grapevine Police Department remains committed to supporting her family and thanks members of the media for their continued compassion and respect.'

This Country Will Now Fine Airline Passengers for Standing Up Too Early After Landing

Turkey is now fining antsy passengers who stand up before the plane comes to a complete stop at the jetbridge. Fliers who unbuckle their seat belts, stand up, or enter the aisle could be fined up to $70, according to the new regulations. The new fine is to stop passengers from gathering their items while the plane is still in motion, which puts fellow fliers' safety at next time you fly into Turkey, you might want to take a beat before standing up to get your luggage, because if you try to snag that bag too quickly, you could have to pay a hefty fine. In May, the Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation announced new rules that will fine any passengers who unbuckle their seat belts, stand up, enter the aisle, or open the overhead bin before the plane has come to a complete stop after taxiing to the jet bridge or parking space for deplaning, the Associated Press reported. According to the agency's announcement, 'Passengers who do not comply with the rules will be reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation through a disruptive passenger report, and an administrative fine will be imposed." The announcement does not say exactly how much the fine will be. However, the AP noted that some local media are reporting it could be up to $70. To ensure every traveler is well aware of the rules, the AP noted that commercial airliners operating in Turkey must now revise their in-flight announcements to include a mention of the rule and warn passengers that they must remain seated or face both the fine and having their name reported to the Turkish Directorate of Civil Aviation. EuroNews reported that Turkish Airlines has already updated its landing announcement, which now states that 'passengers who do not comply with the rules will be reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation through a Disruptive Passenger Report, and an administrative fine will be imposed in accordance with the applicable legal regulations.' And in a move most travelers will applaud, the AP noted that the announcement must also include a reminder that passengers should let the row ahead of them exit first before they attempt to rush by, causing a bottleneck. 'Despite announcements informing passengers of the rules, many are standing up before the aircraft reaches its parking positions and before the seat belt sign is turned off,' the directorate shared in a statement with the AP. 'This behavior compromises the safety of passengers and baggage, [and] disregards the satisfaction and exit priority of other travelers.' There's also plenty of precedent for this new rule. As the New York Times pointed out, in the U.S., passengers can also be fined for failing to follow crew instructions or "engaging in disruptive or violent behavior." In fact, those fines can reach up to $37,000 per violation, and passengers who are particularly poorly behaved could even face jail time or an investigation by the FBI. Sara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, shared a statement of support with the AP, noting that passengers should remain seated and should always adhere to the guidelines set out by crew members. Nelson added, 'Listen to your flight attendants and follow crewmember instructions to get to your destination safely and to avoid unnecessary delay." Read the original article on Travel & Leisure

'King of the Hill' voice actor Jonathan Joss fatally shot outside his Texas home

HOUSTON (AP) — Jonathan Joss, a voice actor best known for his work on the animated television series 'King of the Hill,' was fatally shot near his Texas home, authorities said Monday. Police were dispatched to a home in south San Antonio about 7 p.m. Sunday on a shooting in progress call. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the wounded 59-year-old near the street. 'The officers attempted life saving measures until EMS arrived. EMS pronounced the victim deceased,' San Antonio police said in a statement. Joss' death was confirmed by his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales. 'He was murdered,' de Gonzales told The Associated Press in a text. The two were married earlier this year on Valentine's Day. In a statement, de Gonzales said that before the shooting, he and Joss were checking mail at Joss' home, which had been heavily damaged during a January fire that claimed the lives of their three dogs. A man approached the two and threatened them with a gun, de Gonzales said. 'Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,' de Gonzales said in a statement. After the shooting, authorities arrested 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja and charged him with murder in Joss' death. Police said their investigation was ongoing and did not immediately provide any information on what prompted the shooting. Court records did not list an attorney who could speak on behalf of Ceja, who was being held in the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. Joss, who grew up in San Antonio, was best known as the voice of John Redcorn, a Native American character on the popular 'King of the Hill' animated series that ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008. A reboot of the show is set to start in August. Joss also had a recurring role on the television show 'Parks and Recreation,' playing Chief Ken Hotate. He appeared in two episodes of the series 'Tulsa King' in 2022. A GoFundMe page had been set up in January for Joss after the house fire. According to the page, Joss had lost all of his belongings in the fire, including his vehicle. Before he was fatally shot, Joss had been in Austin, located about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of San Antonio, for events related to a sneak peak of the 'King of the Hill' revival. On Saturday, Joss had posted a video on Instagram in which he said he was signing autographs at a comic book store in Austin. 'The fans get to revisit 'King of the Hill' again, which I think is an amazing thing because it's a great show,' Joss said in the video, adding he had already done voice work on four episodes of the revival. Joss's husband said Joss was grateful for his fans. 'To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family,' de Gonzales said.
