If you're a fan of the Doobie Brothers, then you already know Michael McDonald's history with the band is complicated, at best. Not because there's any bad blood, but because the timeline is a bit all over the place.
So, let's break it down: McDonald, 73, joined the band in 1975 as a temporary replacement for Tom Johnston, who was struggling with health issues. He quickly became a key member, shaping their sound with his soulful vocals.
McDonald stayed through their peak years before leaving in 1982 when the band initially disbanded. Over the years, he's rejoined for reunions and tours, including the recent 50th anniversary celebrations, maintaining a lasting connection with the group.

When McDonald originally joined the band, the lineup was Johnston, Patrick Simmons, John Hartman, and Tiran Porter, among others. As of July 2025, the lineup is Simmons, 76, Johnston, 76, McDonald, and John McFee.
Currently, the Doobie Brothers are touring across the U.S. and Europe on their Walk This Road tour. Earlier this summer, they also released their new album, Walk This Road.
McDonald, of course, couldn't be happier to be back in the fold. "I always missed being a Doobie Brother in all the years [I was gone]. I was fortunate as a solo artist to have some songs get on the radio and be able to tour with my own band for many years. We played all over the world. It's not that I didn't enjoy every minute of that, and playing with those guys. Because I was lucky to have some wonderful musicians in my solo band, but it's not that I didn't miss being a Doobie Brother, because I always did,' McDonald told Ultimate Classic Rock in a recent interview.
As for his future with the Doobie Brothers, that's still unwritten! But he's 100 percent along for the ride.
"I knew it would be hard for me to resist whatever was next. They're even talking about tour dates in 2026 and my only question with that is, 'Will I still be alive?' You know, I hope so. Because for us, what they pay us to do is get on the bus and sleep on a bus, bounce down the road and eat the terrible breakfast at the Hampton Inn, you know. But what we do on stage, we would do for free, you know?' he explained.
'And that's what we live for out here, and that's why we live this lifestyle, is to get that hour and a half on stage with an audience that at this point in our career, some of those people have been coming to see us for 50 years, and there's nothing better than that. Every time we play these songs that we would have been sick of 30 years ago, at least, when we're up there in front of the audience in that moment, with that audience on that night [and] in that moment, it's almost like the first time we ever did the song. It never gets old, so we're grateful for that,' McDonald concluded.

Author, activist traces over a century of transgender history in San Francisco's Tenderloin

In the heart of San Francisco, Reverend Dr. Megan Rohrer has unearthed a lineage of transgender history that has long thrived in the city. Within that history, Rohrer found a community that felt like home. "Finding people in old-timey photos made me feel a little bit more seen in presence today, like I wasn't inventing a new thing for myself," Rohrer said. Today, he walks among the world's first legally recognized Transgender District, which spans parts of Market Street and the Tenderloin. "On these corners is a place where the 1906 earthquake destroyed a lot of stuff, including that vaudeville theater. It paved the way for trans people to kind of move into some of that housing and to SROs in the area," he said. The history embedded in these blocks stretches back centuries. "There is an old, very exciting history of trans community and joy that spans all the way back to the 1800s," he added. Rohrer is bringing that history to light in a new book, aiming to make trans history accessible and to offer a storied family tree to today's trans community. "My goal is that these photos will be so much more accessible to anyone who's looking for them, either at a public library where they check it out, or at a local store where they can get their own, but they have to travel the country to different archives to find these really historic photos," he said. But this history doesn't only live in Rohrer's book - it comes to life through the voices of trans elders, such as Miss Billie Cooper, a veteran who lived through San Francisco's underground trans scene and never stopped being unapologetically herself. "I found about men from all over the world. I had a smorgasbord ... there I had back then I had a beard, okay, but I would get from everybody, and I can wear my own five-inch heels," Cooper said. For many, these aren't just stories. They serve as a guiding light in a time when trans rights are under fire. The lessons mark a blueprint for hope and resistance. "There's not a day I leave my house where I don't wonder where I can go to the bathroom, if I can go to the bathroom, and if I will be safe in those spaces," Rohrer said. "So sharing stories amongst other trans people has been the way to try to stay as safe as possible since the before times," Rohrer said. Rohrer hopes the stories and lessons preserved in the book and reflected in the streets of the Transgender District will ensure the next generation won't have to search so far to find themselves. Megan's book, San Francisco's Transgender District, is now available in bookstores and online.

What Time Does ‘Alien Earth' Begin Streaming This Week? How To Watch

Alien: Earth — a prequel series set before the original Alien movie — begins streaming and launches on cable this week. The official summary for Alien: Earth reads, 'When the mysterious deep space research vessel USCSS Maginot crash-lands on Earth, Wendy (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat in FX's Alien: Earth. 'In the year 2120, the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. In this Corporate Era, cyborgs (humans with both biological and artificial parts) and synthetics (humanoid robots with artificial intelligence) exist alongside humans. 'But the game is changed when the wunderkind Founder and CEO of Prodigy Corporation unlocks a new technological advancement: hybrids (humanoid robots infused with human consciousness). The first hybrid prototype named 'Wendy' marks a new dawn in the race for immortality. After Weyland-Yutani's spaceship collides into Prodigy City, Wendy and the other hybrids encounter mysterious life forms more terrifying than anyone could have ever imagined.' Created by Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), Alien: Earth also stars Timothy Olyphant, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, Adrian Edmondson, David Rysdahl, Essie Davis, Lily Newmark, Erana James, Adarsh Gourav, Jonathan Ajayi, Kit Young, Diêm Camille, Moe Bar-El and Sandra Yi Sencindiver. Alien: Earth begins with a two-episode premiere on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on FX on cable and streaming on Hulu. Alien: Earth consists of eight episodes. An ad-based package for Hulu costs $9.99 per month, while the ad-free package costs $18.99 per month. Hulu is also available in a bundling package with Disney+ and Max for $16.99 per month with ads and $29.99 per month without ads. The Release of 'Alien: Earth' Comes 46 Years After The Original 'Alien' Movie Director Ridley Scott kicked off the Alien franchise in 1979 with Alien, starring Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, Tom Skerritt as Dallas, John Hurt as Kane, Veronica Cartwright as Lambert, Yaphet Kotto as Parker, Harry Dean Stanton as Brett and Ian Holm as Ash. Despite being a hit, the franchise didn't produce a sequel until 1986 with director James Cameron's Aliens, followed by director David Fincher's Alien 3 and director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Alien: Resurrection. After a pair of Alien vs. Predator movies in 2004 and 2007 that aren't considered official entries in the Alien franchise, Scott returned to direct the Alien prequels Prometheus in 2012 and Alien: Covenant in 2017. The franchise went dormant again until 2024, when director Fede Alvarez came out with Alien: Romulus, which is set between the events of Alien and Aliens. Executive produced by Scott, Alien: Earth begins Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on FX on cable and streaming on Hulu.
