TV legend says it was ‘not fun' being on Coronation Street
The actress, 46, became a household name when she joined as factory girl Karen Phillips in 2000.
She soon became Mrs McDonald, marrying Steve (Simon Gregson) just months after they got together following a bet with Janice Battersby (Vicky Entwistle) that she couldn't make it happen.
The couple were pretty much doomed from the outset, and after staging a fake separation, Steve decided that they should part ways. However, shortly afterwards, he proposed again – but there was trouble brewing with Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford).
She'd allowed the Croppers to believe that Roy (David Neilson) had fathered her daughter Amy, but as Steve and Karen said their vows for a second time, confessed that he was actually the baby daddy.
A furious Karen grew increasingly jealous of Tracy's involvement in her husband's life, and after torching her new car, left Weatherfield forever on Boxing Day 2004.
Two decades on, Suranne has reflected on her time in the serial drama, describing it as a 'different time'.
'I was in Corrie 26 years ago, which feels like a lifetime ago!' she said.
'It was huge. The paps were chasing us – it was just a different time. It was not fun, not when you're young.
'It was around the time of people needing to look a certain way, and all of that ring of shame, that's the era that we're talking about.'
Continuing to Celebrity Angels, she said: 'I was in the press a lot back then, and I had people outside my house. I was being followed.
'I didn't go to university, so that was my university. I won quite a lot of awards then, because people loved Karen, because she was kind of feisty, people thought I was maybe like Karen.
'So I think the press loved the character and wanted something interesting for me.'

The actress also spoke about how the show's popularity meant more episodes began to be produced. From January 2026, Coronation Street and sister soap Emmerdale will scale back to five episodes each.
'When I joined, we went from three to four or four to five episodes; it was a huge shift,' she explained. More Trending
'So we were just in more episodes and spent more time in people's living rooms. And like I said, Karen was really wild. So people just thought that I was.'
Despite her feelings on stardom, Suranne is still in touch with a number of her co-stars.
'I was out partying, I was going to everything,' she said.

'I was enjoying myself. I was dating, I was doing all of that with my Corrie group that I still get on with now – me, Sally [Lindsay], Jenny [James], Anthony Cotton and Angela Lonsdale, there were so many of us that were just kind of thrown into it all.'

She took to Instagram to share snaps of the special day, writing the caption: "a gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous day celebrating Hanni & Jack." Her followers got a glimpse of the stunning table and ceremony setup and decor inside the grand gothic cathedral, along with the bus that guests travelled on. Despite a cloudy day, the pair pulled out all the stops. A total of 150 white padded seats were laid out on the flagstones while staff worked hard to instal a detailed floral altar. After their nuptials at the cathedral, they headed the short distance to The Lowry hotel in Salford for the wedding breakfast and reception. Lucy also posed for a photo with her on-screen mum, Tina O'Brien, who looked stunning in a plunging blue floral dress. Tina put on a loved-up display with her new man as she left the wedding. She brought her new boyfriend, interior designer Adam Fadlé, to the star-studded bash and the pair couldn't keep their hands off each other. The couple embraced and kissed before the actress looked up lovingly at her boyfriend while holding his arm. Coronation Street star Tina O'Brien finds love again months after marriage ends - & new man has striking similarity to her ex Tina found love again just four months after the end of her marriage to personal trainer Adam Crofts. The pair were understood to have met through friends in Cheshire where they both live. Tina, 41, who has played Sarah Platt on the ITV soap in two stints over 26 years, split with 40-year-old Adam No1 in March. The pair, who were married for six years, share son Beau together. Real-life soap couples Soaps are renowned for their sweet and scandalous romances – but it's not just in scripted storylines where love is blossoming. A number of our favourite small-screen actors have fallen for co-stars and soapland rivals when the cameras have stopped rolling. Max Parker and Kris Mochrie Despite playing brothers Luke and Lee Posner on Emmerdale, the pair never actually shared any scenes together. But the pair still fell in love after meeting on set. Max and Kris got together in 2020, moving in together later than same year and got engaged in 2022. In a sweet Instagram post, the couple confirmed they're planning a 2025 wedding. Beth Cordingly and Ian Kelsey Beth, who plays Ruby Fox-Miligan, announced her love for her co-star Ian Kelsey, who played Dean Glover, shortly after she joined Emmerdale at the beginning of 2024. 'I am very in love with Ian and very happy. I think it really does work him being an actor too. He has been so fantastic," she gushed. Laura Norton and Mark Jordan Kerry Wyatt and Daz Eden actors Laura and Mark met on the set of Emmerdale in 2014. The couple, who got engaged in 2018, told Loose Women they spent a long time deciding whether they should "just stay as friends." Although it seems they were meant to be and the pair now share two children together. Zoe Henry and Jeff Hordley Emmerdale favourites Zoe and Jeff, who play Rhonda Goskirk and Cain Dingle met at drama college in 1994 and have been together ever since. While working together might be too much for some couples, that's definitely not the case for Zoe and Jeff. Zoe previously told The Sun: "Working on the same show as Jeff also helps because if one of us is having a bad day then the other will completely understand." Lesley Dunlop and Chris Chittell Lesley and Chris are another Dales romantic success story. Unlike some of the other soap stars, the pair who play Brenda Walker and Eric Pollard, are together on and off screen, officially tying the knot in 2016. They also adore working together, but have clear home-work boundaries. "We make a point of not talking about Emmerdale when we're at home, though – that would be just too sad, wouldn't it?" Chris revealed. Sally Carman and Joe Duttine Abi Franklin and Tim Metcalfe actors Sally and Joe got together after meeting on the set of Coronation Street in 2017 and they tied the knot in July 2022. But unlike some of the Emmerdale stars, Sally and Joe prefer that their characters don't interact much. Sally previously admitted it "would be horrendous" to work on a storyline with Joe because "he's too funny." Anthony Cotton and Peter Eccleston Sean Tully may have been unlucky in love on the cobbles, but in real life Antony's met his Prince Charming. The soap star started dating long-term partner Peter in 2005, after they met when he was working as an assistant props buyer on Corrie. Jane Danson and Robert Beck Corrie favourite Jane Danson tied the knot with soap star Robert Beck in 2005. The actress, who plays Leanne Battersby, shares two children, Harry and Sam, with the former Brookside star. During their marriage, Robert has also done a stint in Weatherfield playing criminal Jimmy Dockerson. Caroline Harding and Chris Gascoyne Chris, who played pub landlord Peter Barlow, married soap star Caroline in 2002. Although she is best known as an Emmerdale star, Caroline did visit her husband at work when she did a two-episode stint as doctor on the Manchester soap in 2020. The couple share a daughter called Belle, plus two children, Pip and Freddie from Caroline's previous marriage. Nadine Mulkerrin and Rory Douglas Speed Nadine Mulkerrin, and Rory Doulas Speed are known for their Hollyoaks alter egos Cleo McQueen and Joel Dexter. The loved-up pair got engaged on a December 2018 trip to Amsterdam - just over a year after they announced they were dating. They now share two kids, Reggie and Dougie. Sophie Austin and Shayne Ward Former Hollyoaks star Sophie, whose best known for playing villain Lindsay Butterfield, was introduced to singer and ex-Corrie star Shayne through mutual friends. She gave birth to their daughter Willow in December 2016 and they welcomed a son in 2022. Tina also has a 16-year-old daughter from her relationship with her former Corrie co-star Ryan Thomas. Adam No2, aged 38, studied architecture before opening his interior design business in 2010 and is a millionaire design guru loved by footballers like Paul Pogba. He overhauled the former Manchester United star's lavish Cheshire pad after he signed for the club. Jack's wedding festivities carried on late into the night as he and his Corrie costars celebrated his long-awaited nuptials. Some of the other Coronation Street stars spotted at the big do, included soap legend Helen Worth who played his on-screen mum, Gail Platt, Samia Longchambon (Maria Connor), Ben Price (Nick Tilsley), Colson Smith (Craig Tinker) and Julia Goulding (Shona Platt). Also in attendance were Jack's former Celebrity Big Brother housemate Chris Hughes and his co-star Alan Halsall, who was joined by new girlfriend Ellie Dolan. 8 Lucy gave a sneak peek into Jack's lavish do Credit: Splash 8 The Corrie cast reunited to celebrate Jack's special day Credit: Instagram 8 She shared stunning decor details from the ceremony Credit: Instagram 8 And she snapped the party bus the wedding guests went on Credit: Instagram

I'm A Celebrity star has 'a lifetime of medication' ahead as he shares tumour update
Singer and former I'm A Celebrity star Russell Watson has shared an update on his health in a candid Good Morning Britain chat after undergoing surgery for two brain tumours I'm A Me Out of Here! alumni Russell Watson has shared a health update after battling two brain tumours. The singer, who competed on the 2020 series of I'm A Celeb, appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain today to chat about his honorary doctorate from the University of Greater Manchester. The star was given the degree at a ceremony for students from the School of Health, Science and Society, during which he shared how his health battles had "graphically highlighted" to him the "amazing job done by staff in our NHS". Russell, 58, was diagnosed with his first brain tumour in 2005 after experiencing headaches and underwent brain surgery for a benign brain tumour. A second brain tumour was found in 2007 after an MRI scan showed it had regrown and caused bleeding into his brain. The singer required emergency surgery and underwent extensive radiotherapy afterwards. When asked by presenter Charlotte Hawkins about his health on today's programme, Russell said: "It's good. It's very good. I feel good, I feel strong." He added: "I'll be on a lifetime of medication - that's one of the by products of what happened to me. But I'm just happy to be here. I have a wonderful life, I'm very very lucky. I've been 25 years in the industry. Having lasted this long is a great thing." Earlier this year, Russell shared the chilling words he received from doctors shortly after being diagnosed with his second brain tumour. He told The Guardian: "After surgery, I was told that, even healthy and fit, I would no longer perform like my younger self – something that I refused to accept. "I may not be the wagging-tailed puppy-dog any more, but my voice is in the best shape it's been in, and I think I look in pretty good shape as well. My life has been this cacophony of incredible highs and disastrous lows, but it's made me the person I am today." According to the NHS, those suffering with a brain tumour can have a number of different symptoms depending on where in the brain the tumour is found. Common symptoms include headaches, seizures, persistently feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting) and drowsiness.
