Giants' Nabers should be ready for training camp after sitting out spring practices with toe issue

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers should be available to practice for the start of training camp next month after sitting out during the spring with a toe issue.
Coach Brian Daboll said Wednesday that Nabers was 'doing good' and he had no concerns that the injury would affect his availability.
'Every person's at a different part in, call it rehab if you will or prehab,' Daboll said, 'and we just did what we thought was best for Malik to try to get him as healthy as we can.'
Daboll said last month during organized team activities that the Giants were simply being cautious with Nabers, who has had an issue with the toe since his college days at LSU. Daboll also said then that Nabers didn't need any procedures on his toe during the offseason.
Nabers didn't practice in the sessions open to reporters during OTAs and minicamp, but participated in some of the team's walkthrough periods.
'He's had some issues, like I said, in the past, in college with it,' Daboll said. 'And again, that was the plan that we came up with for him and for our football team.'
Nabers, the sixth overall pick in the draft last year, caught an NFL rookie-record 109 passes last season while setting the franchise mark for most receptions in a season. Nabers also tied former Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. for the NFL record for fewest games needed for 100 career catches, reaching the milestone in just 14 games.
Left tackle Andrew Thomas also didn't practice throughout the spring while he works his way back from surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury to his right foot that sidelined him the final 11 games.
Three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence didn't practice in team drills, but participated in individual drills during OTAs and minicamp.
Third-round defensive tackle Darius Alexander and fourth-round running back Cam Skattebo also didn't practice fully in minicamp because of undisclosed injuries.
'They're progressing,' Daboll said. 'They'll do everything they can do to get ready and hopefully they'll be ready to go.'

Bengals' AFC North Rival Signs All-Pro Cornerback

Bengals' AFC North Rival Signs All-Pro Cornerback originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cincinnati Bengals hope to somehow crawl back into contention in the AFC North next season after a disastrous 9-8 season that saw little go right on defense. Advertisement But that task may have just gotten a bit more difficult, as the rival Baltimore Ravens may have just gotten better. On Wednesday, the Ravens announced the signing of free-agent All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander, who was recently waived by the Green Bay Packers as a salary cap casualty. On Tuesday, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson pleaded with GM Eric DeCosta to please go sign his former college teammate with the Louisville Cardinals. He said it half-jokingly (kind of) to reporters. Just one day later, the Ravens made a reunion a reality with a one-year, $6 million deal. Baltimore ran away with the AFC North last season after the Pittsburgh Steelers ended the year with a stunning collapse with a five-game losing streak that included a wild-card loss to the Ravens. Advertisement Baltimore finished at 12-5 while the Steelers ended 10-7 with the Bengals at 9-8 and out of the AFC playoffs. The Cleveland Browns were a distant fourth at 3-14. The Bengals' offseason has been plagued by negative press for holdouts of Trey Hendrickson and first-round draft pick Shemar Stewart with contract disputes. The team replaced former defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo with Al Golden, who enters his first season at the helm with an incredible amount of uncertainty. Hendrickson is entering the final year of his deal and wants a new contract as he's coming off a career season with 17.5 sacks, 49 total tackles with 33 solo and 19 for loss. All career highs. Advertisement Stewart has yet to sign his rookie deal, as he disputes language in his contract that fails to give him injury protection, among other things. While the Bengals are seemingly losing the offseason, the Ravens have just gotten better. George Kittle Leaves No Doubt About Niners' Expectations

George Kittle Leaves No Doubt About Niners' Expectations originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last season proved a major disappointment for the San Francisco 49ers. Coming off a Super Bowl appearance, many thought they were well positioned to make another run and potentially break through, ending a decades long title drought. Advertisement The results could not have been anything further from that dream. San Francisco plummeted to fourth in the NFC West and finished with a lousy 6-11 record. Instead of running it back or doubling down on their group, general manager John Lynch and his staff decided to allow for some major changes. The Niners saw an exodus of key contributors from last season during free agency, helping the cause with their trade of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. San Francisco used the rest of their offseason to invest in their few core while attempting to get younger and cheaper elsewhere. They welcome some promising prospects in a few key spots, so there may be some adjustment periods for the crop of newcomers. But as George Kittle urged during an appearance on CBS Sports HQ, the championship standard of this storied franchise has not changed. Advertisement 'I would say we have pretty lofty expectations,' Kittle said. 'We always do. We understand that we lost some really key players... 'That is obvious. We're aware of that. But I feel like, in the way we signed guys in free agency, the way that we drafted, we targeted those holes that we lost. I'm not going to say we're going to replace All-Pro players, Pro Bowl players immediately, but I think we drafted really, really well.' The Niners lost 17 players either by trade, release or signing with another team during free agency. Despite their 11 draft picks, those losses aren't made up in the span of a few days or even months when encompassing the offseason. But the Niners did not lose everyone and they retained their most important players. Kittle, Fred Warner and Brock Purdy all signed contract extensions this offseason while Nick Bosa and a hopefully healthy Christian McCaffrey remain in the fold. Advertisement The Niners have taken note of some encouraging early returns on first-round pick Mykel Williams and the young receiving tandem of Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings are positioned for more featured roles in 2025. Rarely if ever do teams see this many pieces leave during an offseason. But the Niners have allowed this by their own doing and it appears everyone is on board with the slight shift in direction. As Kittle understands, the brand and the name means the challenges that come with these changes are irrelevant at the end of the day. The expectations are positive results and the burden falls on this group to make that happen. 49ers' New Defensive Acquisition Could Make Starting Lineup for Week 1

49ers' New Defensive Acquisition Could Make Starting Lineup for Week 1 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers have had to part ways with a few defensive backs over the last few months, namely cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Talanoa Hufanga. As a result, the team could use someone to step up in a big way in 2025. Advertisement And that someone could be one of their new players that they signed this offseason. Because of the injury to safety Malik Mustapha, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports that the 49ers will likely be starting former New York Giant Jason Pinnock in the free safety spot to start the year against the Seattle Seahawks. "Pinnock, of course, also knows Saleh's and Boyer's systems, making him a quick study this spring," Barrows wrote. "Because of that, he's a frontrunner to start — perhaps next to (Ji'Ayir) Brown — in Week 1." Pinnock is perhaps best known for getting an interception in the end zone and taking it 102 yards back to the house in Week 5 of the 2023 season against the Miami Dolphins. But he took on a different role in 2024 with the Giants. Advertisement He finished this past season with a solid 85 tackles and four tackles for loss, as he was used more as a strong safety. The Niners will likely put him at free safety, which he showed he could do in 2023 with a pair of interceptions and six pass deflections. San Francisco is coming off of a very disappointing 6-11 season, so Pinnock will be looking to help the team bounce back and make it back to the playoffs in 2025.
