Dominant Flamengo open with victory at Club World Cup
Brazilian giants Flamengo set themselves up for a Club World Cup showdown with Chelsea by easing to a 2-0 win against Esperance of Tunisia in their opening game at the tournament on Monday.
Goals either side of half time from Uruguayan international Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Luiz Araujo gave a dominant Flamengo -- coached by former Chelsea player Filipe Luis -- a deserved victory in the Group D clash in Philadelphia.
Flamengo, who qualified for the tournament as a recent winner of the Copa Libertadores, fielded a strong side featuring several Brazil internationals and gave a debut to Italy midfielder Jorginho following his recent arrival from Arsenal.
Jorginho will come up against former club Chelsea when the teams meet in their second match on Friday, with the Premier League club fresh from beating Los Angeles FC 2-0 earlier Monday.
De Arrascaeta opened the scoring for the Rio de Janeiro outfit in the 17th minute at Lincoln Financial Field when he finished first time from a Luiz Araujo assist.
That set off wild celebrations among the Flamengo fans, who made up the majority of the 25,797 crowd in a stadium which can hold close to 70,000.
Flamengo had chances to increase their lead while Tunisian champions Esperance created little of note before their Algerian winger Youcef Belaili almost equalised midway through the second half.
Shortly after that Flamengo scored again, as Luiz Araujo found a pocket of space in the box in the 70th minute, turned and curled a low shot into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Doak joins Bournemouth as Liverpool exodus grows
Scotland international winger Ben Doak has joined Bournemouth in a deal worth up to £25 million ($34 million), taking Liverpool's tally from player sales beyond £200 million during this transfer window. The 19-year-old, who joined from Celtic for just £600,000 in 2022, made only 10 appearances for the Liverpool first team. Doak impressed during a loan spell at second tier Middlesbrough and picked up six caps at international level last season. Forest sign French forward Kalimuendo
French striker Arnaud Kalimuendo has signed a fiveyear contract with Nottingham Forest, the Premier League club announced on Monday. According to French media, the transfer paid to ex-club Rennes is believed to be at least 30 million euros ($35 million). 'Nottingham Forest is delighted to announce the signing of Arnaud Kalimuendo, who joins the club on a five-year deal,' read a statement on the English club's website. The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, before enjoying a breakthrough season at Ligue 1 side Rennes last year when he netted 18 times in 34 appearances in all competitions. Prior to joining Rennes in 2022, he made five appearances for PSG and enjoyed success during loan spells at Lens -- scoring 21 goals in 65 outings. 'When I heard about the interest from Forest, I was honoured. This is a proud moment for me, joining a team who had a strong season last year and a club with great history,' said Kalimuendo.
