What's The Deal With Ford's New Megazilla 2.0 Crate Engine?

Yahoo04-03-2025
Ford announced the 7.3-liter, gas-fired, naturally aspirated, pushrod V8 Godzilla engine to its friends and associates way back in February of 2019. At first it was just a truck engine, a big ol' V8 mill that put down a relatively sedate 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque in stock trim. Pretty good for hauling around building materials or landscaping equipment, but nothing that was going to set the drag strips aflame, as it were. That said, it had a lot of potential and it didn't take long for hot rodders to figure out how to squeeze a bunch more horses out of the big engine with just a handful of basic, off-the-shelf mods — upwards of 600 of them, in fact. They even wanted the massive engine implemented into other vehicles.
Never ones to rest on their laurels, the big brains at FoMoCo immediately got to work making an in-house hot-rodded version of their big, new V8 to beat the aftermarket at its own game. Godzilla hadn't even made it into Tokyo yet, as it were, before FoMoCo was teasing a bigger, stronger, angrier version called the Megazilla. Megazilla? Really guys? When MechaGodzilla was right there?
Anyway, the Megazilla engine kept Big-G's displacement, iron block, compression, and general construction and tossed a bunch of hi-po go-fast parts at it — Callies forged H-beam con rods, Mahle forged pistons, CNC-ported cylinder heads, etc. This bumped the Godzilla's output to 615 horsepower and a whopping 638 pound-feet of torque. Not bad, but I think we can do better.

Ford obviously agrees with me, because in January of 2025 the company unveiled plans for an even bigger, angrier Megazilla, the cleverly named Megazilla 2.0. Now, we all know there's no replacement for displacement, right? Well, there's a corollary to that old saw — boost. Megazilla 2.0 has the same 7.3-liter, iron block, pushrod V8 as the Megazilla and Godzilla mills, but this one has a blower! In fact, it has a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger — the same one used on Ford's smaller, higher-tech Coyote crate engine — that provides enough boost to push an alleged 1,000-plus horsepower out of the Godzilla mill. We love forced induction, don't we, folks?
Okay, so, why is this such a big deal? Well, for starters, the fact that the nerds over at Ford Performance were able to force enough air into an iron-block, pushrod V8 to produce north of a thousand horsepower without blowing it, themselves, and half of Dearborn clear to Saturn is a feat in and of itself. Then there's the engine's shape and size. Despite being roughly the size of a 351 Windsor as the Godzilla platform weighs nearly 700 pounds, a small-ish blown V8 with tough as nails internals and a torque curve wider than the Katy Freeway is going to be a godsend for racers.
While its official "off-road use only" status will keep it out of the hands of workaday hot rodders, it sounds like just the thing for trophy trucks, desert racers, prerunners, and drag racers of all kinds. Despite its heft, being able to drop more than a thousand reliable horses into a spot the size of an old small block opens up all kinds of possibilities.
As stated earlier, details about the new Megazilla 2.0 are still pretty sparse. Its official launch isn't slated until fourth-quarter 2025, and a lot can happen over the course of six to eight months in the auto industry. Obviously, we'll keep you abreast of the situation until then, and if anyone at the Detroit Desk sees a bigger, badder, blown Godzilla stomping around Metro Detroit, you'll be the first ones to know.

'Fastest Van' At the Nurburgring: Ford Stock (NYSE:F) Slips Despite Outlandish Win

Give legacy automaker Ford (F) credit: it is taking the credo of 'no boring cars' so seriously that it is almost frightening. In fact, Ford managed to make a Transit SuperVan surprisingly, well, surprising by putting it to the test on the Nurburgring track. It came away from that storied proving ground with a new record: the fastest van to ever see the track. Yet despite this, Ford stock slipped fractionally in Monday afternoon's trading. It was considered iconic when the Ford Transit van, driven by Sabine Schmitz on an episode of Top Gear, managed to post a lap time of 10:12. But recently, Romain Dumas took a similar run in Ford's electric vehicle (EV) demonstrator version of the SuperVan and pared over three minutes off Schmitz's time. The SuperVan came in at 6:48.42, which—and brace yourself for this—puts it between Chevrolet's (GM) Corvette ZR1X and a late-model representative from the Mercedes-AMG (MBGAF) GT Black Series. Admittedly, there were key differences that helped; the SuperVan made its run on slick tires, and was built as a 'purpose-built racing vehicle.' This forces observers to take the result with something of a grain of salt, even if the lap is still downright impressive by any standard for something that looks like, well, a van. Consider the 2025 Explorer With the end of the model year approaching, some car buyers are, perhaps, starting to wonder if they should buy a new car now or wait for the next model year to show up. And for the Ford Explorer—one of Ford's biggest names in SUV—that model year issue is particularly telling. The 2026 Explorer, reports note, will actually be less expensive than the 2025 model. Several new Explorers will be part of the lineup, including the Explorer Active at $38,330, the Platinum at $50,830, and the Tremor, taking over for the Timberline, that costs $48,330. But the 2025 models are often seeing price cuts, reports note, part of a clear-the-lot strategy. And in some cases, the 2025s may have better feature sets, which means a 2025 could prove a better value than its 2026 equivalent. Is Ford Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on F stock based on two Buys, nine Holds and three Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 6.72% rally in its share price over the past year, the average F price target of $10.74 per share implies 6% downside risk.

Ford takes new risk after company suffers billions in losses: 'The most radical redesign of how we manufacture cars'

After losing billions of dollars in its electric vehicle division over recent years, Ford has announced a massive pivot that will completely reimagine its vehicle assembly process, The New York Times reported. "We tore up the moving assembly line that you see here today and we came up with a brand-new concept," Ford CEO Jim Farley said at a plant in Louisville, Kentucky, per the Times. "This is the most radical redesign of how we manufacture cars since the Model T." Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! At the time, the company appeared poised to challenge Tesla for EV dominance in the U.S. market. However, in the years since, Ford's EV wing has suffered massive losses while Tesla has managed to significantly drop the price of its vehicles, making it more difficult for Ford to compete. According to the Times, Ford's EV division has lost an eyewatering $12 billion, including $2.2 billion in the first six months of 2025. Despite these losses, the U.S. electric vehicle market has demonstrated signs of consistent growth in recent years. For the first three months of 2025, EV sales in the U.S. increased by 11.4% compared to the previous year, with nearly 300,000 EVs sold, according to Cox Automotive. After previously announcing cutbacks to its EV program, Ford said it will be shifting to lower-cost materials, which should lower vehicle prices and help Ford better compete with new EVs coming out of China. "I'd say this puts them within spitting distance of the Chinese," Sandy Munro, an auto consultant and engineer, said of Ford's cost-saving moves, per the Times. Despite the billions of dollars at stake, Farley sought to manage expectations. "We are doing so many new things I can't tell you with 100 percent certainty that it will all go just right," Farley said, per the Times. If all goes well, having more affordable EVs on the market would be a win for consumers and the planet. In addition to their environmental benefits, electric vehicles can help consumers save significant amounts of money on gas. Do you think a majority of Americans will have EVs in 20 years? Driving an EV can save people up to $2,200 every year on fuel costs, according to the Department of Energy. Installing solar panels allows drivers to take the cost savings of an EV even further. Charging off home solar is cheaper than off-grid or at a public charging station, and it comes with the added benefit of knowing that the vehicle is powered by cleaner, renewable energy from the sun. Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon: Ford's $325,000 Mustang launches this October

Ford Motor Co. has revealed a new trim it will offer on its most expensive and fastest Mustang — the Mustang GTD. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker revealed the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon trim on Aug. 14 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Salinas, California. Ford chose this location for the reveal because this new trim is race-inspired. Ford spokesman Brandon Turkus said the Mustang GTD has a starting price of $325,000. The company is not sharing pricing for specific trims or options, but the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon trim is expected to come to market in October. This Liquid Carbon trim will use lightweight carbon fiber, a technology that plays a critical role in the GTD's body and performance, the company said in a release. Ford noted that carbon fiber is preferred for race cars' bodies. The Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon "skips a trip to the paint booth" Ford said by replacing paint with sheet metal in the doors. The bonded carbon-fiber saves 13 pounds of weight compared to a Mustang GTD Carbon Series with the Performance package. This weight reduction delivers better aerodynamics. 'Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon is the ultimate expression of the Mustang GTD's high-tech, high-performance construction and is a reminder of the race-derived, cutting-edge capability that sits beneath the surface of every Mustang GTD,' Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall said in a statement. Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon will have an exposed carbon body and functional aerodynamics, Goodall said. It features a black Brembo brake caliper, matching an anodized body with gloss-black GTD script. Anodizing is a process that converts a metal surface into "a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant, anodic oxide finish," according to Ford said the performance package will be standard on the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon trim.
