Chinese couple escape unscathed from serious car crash, decide to get married right away
The 31-year-old man, surnamed Ma, had just returned from a self-driving trip with his girlfriend, travelling from their hometown in central China's Shanxi province to Shandong province in the east.
On July 26, while driving on a two-lane highway in Shandong, Ma attempted to overtake a truck. Just as he manoeuvred past the truck's left rear wheel, its left front tyre blew out, causing the vehicle to veer towards Ma's car.
Despite Ma's quick reaction to brake, they could not avoid a collision, ending up squeezed against the highway's median barrier. Photo: Facebook
Despite Ma's quick reaction to brake, they were unable to avoid a collision, getting squeezed against the highway's median barrier. Their vehicle sustained severe damage, with both the front and rear dangerously mangled. Remarkably, Ma and his girlfriend, who was seated in the front passenger seat, emerged with only cuts and bruises.
Even the responding traffic police remarked that it was a miracle they survived. The truck driver also emerged unscathed. Ma later shared the truck's dashcam footage online, where viewers noted that the driver accelerated after the tyre rupture, allowing Ma to narrowly avoid a more devastating impact.
Grateful for their safety, Ma emphasised their habit of wearing seat belts, which undoubtedly contributed to their survival.

Later that evening, Ma suggested to his girlfriend that they should get married. The couple, who were introduced by friends and had been dating for a year, had previously discussed marriage but had not been particularly eager to rush into it.

Hong Kong taxis need to shift gear so that every cab is ‘premium'
Hong Kong's taxi industry is being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Moves to legitimise and regulate ride-hailing firms while improving services offered by cabbies are long overdue. But members of the influential taxi trade continue to push for privileges and block the path to progress. The government must take the handbrake off – and accelerate. Officials have had to go to extraordinary lengths to modernise the industry and lift standards. Taxis are to be required to offer at least two forms of digital payment and install cameras and devices to record their trips. There is a new disciplinary system and fleets of new 'premium' taxis have hit the streets. None of this should have been necessary. The taxi industry should have eagerly embraced technology and offered excellent service. That is the best way of competing with popular ride-hailing firms. The most important requirement is to guarantee passenger safety. The death of a tourist from the Philippines this month, knocked down by a 'dizzy' 80-year-old taxi driver, has renewed long-standing concerns about the roadworthiness of elderly cabbies.

Baidu's Apollo Go robotaxi service achieves 20,000km of ‘safe driving' in Hong Kong trials
Baidu's Apollo Go robotaxi service has racked up 20,000 kilometres of 'safe driving' in Hong Kong road tests, the company said on Saturday, as the city expands driverless vehicle trial areas in efforts to develop the sector. The mileage was completed during trials in Hong Kong's Northern Lantau and Tung Chung areas since receiving the city's first autonomous vehicle pilot licence in November last year, the company said. Apollo's successful test experience in Hong Kong to date would provide an 'important reference' for promoting its self-driving technology to other right-hand-drive markets worldwide, Baidu said. Hong Kong chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu and officials from the Transport Department on Friday met with Baidu co-founder and CEO Robin Li Yanhong as part of this year's policy address consultation, the company said.
