How to manage money with ADHD

How to manage money with ADHD

Telegraph2 days ago
As a financial planner at one of Britain's most high-end wealth managers, Olly Cheng has seen his fair share of clients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – not that many of them are aware of it.
'When a client starts telling you about their quirks – like having a cup of coffee before bed – you're almost in the room diagnosing them,' he said.
Mr Cheng, who has ADHD himself, sees familiar tendencies in the ambitious entrepreneurs and chief executives he manages at Rathbones – and he recognises that parents who disclose a child's diagnosis, worried about inheritance implications, may be inadvertently telling him something about themselves as well.
The number of adults diagnosed with ADHD increased 20-fold between 2000 and 2018. After the pandemic, the number of adults seeking a diagnosis climbed a further 400pc, according to the ADHD Foundation.
The condition is characterised by impulsivity, high energy levels and a propensity for being distracted. Perhaps unsurprisingly, if you have ADHD, managing your bills, savings, investments and spending can feel overwhelming.
For Dr Ben Stride, a GP and founder of Think ADHD, an online resource guide, the condition is effectively a 'tax' that needs to be budgeted for.
'People with ADHD often experience difficulty when managing money. This isn't down to carelessness or a lack of motivation, but rather due to differences in brain function that affect self-regulation,' he said.
'ADHD impacts executive functions which include skills like planning, organisation and impulse control.'
Here, experts tell Telegraph Money the tactics anyone with ADHD can use to stop finances getting out of control.
Acknowledge your impulse spending triggers
Being a spectrum, ADHD presents differently depending on the person. 'Those with inattentive-type ADHD may struggle more with missed payments, disorganisation and feeling overwhelmed by their finances,' said Dr Stride.
'Those with hyperactive-impulsive traits may be more prone to risk-taking behaviours such as gambling and credit misuse.'
Different steps can address the condition's various symptoms, so it's important to be aware of what kind of behaviours you're susceptible to.
'ADHD is often associated with emotional dysregulation. Spending money can become a way of coping with low mood or stress, creating a temporary sense of relief, followed by guilt or shame,' Dr Stride said.
'It becomes a self-punishing loop with an impact that can last for years.'
Automate as much as you can
For those with inattentive-type ADHD, modern banking apps can help reduce that overwhelmed feeling at the sheer number of payments you need to remember.
Mr Cheng recommends setting up as many direct debits and standing orders as possible to alleviate the stress of managing bills, savings and credit card payments.
'The more people can get done with direct debits, the better,' he said. 'There's a bit of work to do early, but if you can set payments up and put them to the back of your mind, it's the best possible thing you can do.'

Russia's master negotiator knows Trump's weaknesses and will try to exploit them

Vladimir Putin will know exactly how he wants this to play out. He is the master negotiator who's been doing this for decades. He'll be across all the details, the history and the legal arguments. And he'll know that his opponent is not. His strategy will be to exploit that. I think the ultimate aim for the Kremlin leader is to convince Donald Trump that the quickest path to peace is a deal on Russia's terms. But he can't present it like that. He'll have to give the appearance of making concessions because he knows the American president can't lose face here. He must have something to show from this summit. 3:44 That something could be the promise of a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which Trump has once again talked up the chances of. But if that's the case, I suspect it'll be a loose promise, with strings attached. Something the White House can claim is progress, but may prove unachievable. I expect the Russian president will seek to play on Trump's desire for a rapid resolution to the conflict and his desire to take credit for it. That's why Putin has been buttering him up ahead of the meeting, praising Trump's "energetic and sincere" efforts to find peace. I think he'll also try to appeal to Trump's transactional nature and seek to tempt him with various sweeteners that could come from siding with Russia. 4:41 That means things like rare earth deals and joint projects in the Arctic, which is why the Russian delegation includes finance minister Anton Siluanov and Kremlin investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev. It also includes defence minister Andrei Belousov, which might suggest that Putin is serious about proposing a deal on nuclear arms control, after raising the prospect of it on Thursday. Only one pact remains between the US and Russia, and it expires in February. A new one would almost certainly be a prize the American president would go for. 2:54

Birkenstock sales step up in ‘ugly shoe summer'

Price rises and strong sales of closed-toe clogs helped the shoe maker Birkenstock beat profit expectations as it became the latest beneficiary of the 'ugly shoe summer'. The German sandal maker said sales rose 16% in the three months to the end of June, if currency fluctuations were excluded. The average price of its products sold rose by about 5% and the number of items sold rose by about 8%. There was demand for its suede leather closed-toe Boston clogs, which sell for as much as £250 and generally cost more than the brand's more well-known sandals, which are priced from £105 for a leather version. Total sales at the company, which listed on the US stock market in October 2023 valued at $7.5bn (£5.5bn), rose 12% to €635m (£546m) in the quarter with net profit up 73% to €129m. This summer there has been an upturn in popularity of quirky footwear, from rubber flip-flops to glove-like fitness shoes that fit each individual toe. However, the 'ugly' footwear brand Crocs last week reported a 30% slump in sales amid new competition from split-toe shoes to flip-flops and Birkenstock's clogs, which come in plastic as well as leather. Known for its cork-lined sandals, Birkenstock pledged to make its offering more varied, with more clogs, trainers, shoes and boots when it launched on the stock market. The company makes 95% of its shoes at its own factories in Germany. Its chief executive, Oliver Reichert, said it was 'well-positioned to manage the impact' of new US import tariffs of 15% on goods imported from the EU. He said the higher costs would be managed through a combination of 'pricing adjustment, cost discipline and inventory management to protect the long-term health and profitability of the Birkenstock brand'. We want to sell our listed house — do we need an EPC?

Q. We want to sell our listed house. The estate agents say we may not need an energy performance certificate (EPC) but should get one anyway. Do we need an EPC for a listed house? A. EPCs record the energy efficiency of buildings, rated from A to G. It is a common misconception that they are not needed for listed properties. It is far more complicated than that. The basic requirements are set out in part 2 of the Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections) (England and Wales) Regulations 2007. Regulation 6 requires a valid EPC to be available whenever a building is to be sold. The maximum penalty for marketing or selling a property without a valid EPC is £5,000, although prosecutions are rare. • Read more expert advice on property, interiors and home improvement Under regulation 5, certain properties are exempt from these requirements, including 'buildings officially protected as part of a designated environment or because of their special architectural or historical merit'. Although this potentially exempts listed buildings and houses in conservation areas, they are only excluded if 'compliance with certain minimum energy performance requirements would unacceptably alter their character or appearance'. For example, government guidance notes that many typical EPC recommendations — such as double glazing, new doors and windows, external wall insulation and external boiler flues — would probably cause unacceptable changes in most historic buildings. This presents a problem in that listed building owners are unlikely to know whether they will need an EPC without first asking an EPC assessor to advise on what energy efficiency measures are needed. Owners may also need to consult with their listed buildings officer to anticipate queries from potential buyers about any advice set out in the EPC. In addition, in December 2024, the government launched a consultation about reforms to the regime, which include proposals to bring all listed buildings within the EPC net. It is probably best to commission an EPC before marketing a listed house, even if it turns out that a valid certificate is not required by legislation.
