'Police Can't Be Everywhere': Kalyan Banerjee's Remark On Kolkata Gangrape Sparks Outrage
Last Updated:
Banerjee stated that only a few men commit such crimes and questioned what could be done if a friend raped another friend
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee on Friday sparked massive political backlash after making controversial remarks about the alleged gangrape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata.
Speaking to the media on the incident, Banerjee stated that only a few men commit such crimes and questioned what could be done if a friend raped another friend.
'I am not an advocate into the incident that occurred at the Law College but the accused should be arrested. A few men commit this type of crime…But what can be done if a friend rapes his friend," he said.

The TMC MP pointed out that this was an incident involving students at a government college and questioned who would protect the victim if the police were not always present.
'Will the Police be there in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (victim)? This (South Calcutta Law College) is a government college. Will the Police always be there?," he asked.
He further said that no law or police could prevent such crimes unless there was a change in society's mindset. Banerjee added," College authorities are not part of the government machinery."
BJP hits back
Meanwhile, the BJP West Bengal unit strongly criticised the TMC leader's remarks. In a post on X, the party accused Banerjee of showing sympathy towards the accused.
'TMC MP comes out in support of rapists! In Kasba, a college student has been gang-raped by a TMCP leader and his gang. But TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee calls women's safety concerns a mere 'political agenda,'" the BJP posted.

Referring to Banerjee's comments on the RG Kar Medical College case, the BJP said, 'In the RG Kar rape case, as Bengal rose in protest through 'Raat Jago," Kalyan mocks the movement and shamelessly claims the govt has no role if a rape happens inside a college. So the police can hold umbrellas for TMC leaders and Mamata Banerjee, but not protect women?"
'This disgraceful attitude is why women in Bengal feel abandoned, unsafe, and unheard," the party added.
'Crossed all limits of shamelessness'
BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya also slammed Banerjee, saying he had crossed 'all limits of shamelessness."
'He trivialized the crime by saying it was committed by 'classmates." So rape by classmates is acceptable now?," the BJP leader asked on X.
SHAME!In the horrific gang rape case of a college student in Kasba, involving a TMCP leader and his associates, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has crossed all limits of shamelessness.
When asked about women's safety, he dismissed it as a mere 'political agenda."

'Is the role of West Bengal Police now limited to guarding Mamata Banerjee's residence and holding umbrellas over TMC leaders, while Bengal's daughters cry for justice?," Malviya asked. He further added that under Mamata Banerjee, Bengal has descended into lawlessness, and leaders like Kalyan Banerjee prove that the TMC doesn't care.

BJP reshuffles Puducherry unit, minister and three MLAs step down ahead of 2026 polls
PUDUCHERRY: The BJP on Friday initiated a major reshuffle in its Puducherry unit ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with Adi Dravidar Welfare Minister A K Sai Saravanan Kumar resigning from the N Rangasamy-led cabinet, and three nominated MLAs — V P Ramalingam, K Venkatesan, and R B Ashok Babu — stepping down. The resignations were directed by the party's central leadership as part of a strategy to bring in new faces in the run-up to the polls. Puducherry is the BJP's only stronghold in South India, where it governs in alliance with the AINRC. Sai Saravanan Kumar, the lone Dalit minister in the cabinet, confirmed he had stepped down on the party's instructions. 'I was appointed minister on June 27 at the direction of PM Narendra Modi. I have now resigned following his directive,' he said. Assembly Speaker R Selvam confirmed that the resignations of the three nominated MLAs had been accepted and forwarded to L-G K Kailashnathan for submission to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. BJP Puducherry in-charge Nirmal Kumar Surana said the party has finalised three names for the vacant nominated MLA posts. Those in consideration include S Rajasekaran, former Congress MLA E Theepainjan and D Selvam, current BJP vice-president.

‘Mask has come off': Rahul Gandhi on RSS calling for review of words in Preamble to Constitution
Criticising the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for calling for a review of words in the Preamble to the Constitution, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that the Hindutva organisation's ' mask had come off again '. The RSS is the parent organisation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The Constitution hurts the RSS because it talks about equality, secularism and justice, Gandhi said on social media. 'RSS-BJP does not want the Constitution, but Manusmriti,' said the leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. 'They want to enslave the marginalised and the poor again by snatching their rights. Their real agenda is to snatch away a powerful weapon like the Constitution from them.' Gandhi added: 'RSS should stop dreaming like this – we will never let them succeed. Every patriotic Indian will protect the Constitution till the last breath.' The Congress leader's comments came a day after the RSS on Thursday said that the inclusion of the words 'secular' and 'socialist' in the Preamble to the Constitution should be reviewed. 'The words were added during [the] Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not function, and the judiciary became lame,' said RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale. He added: 'So, whether they should remain in the Preamble should be considered. The Preamble is eternal. Are the thoughts of socialism as an ideology eternal for India?' Hosabale made the statements while speaking at an event marking 50 years since the Emergency was declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government in 1975. The words 'socialist' and 'secular' were not part of the Constitution adopted in 1950 and were added in 1976 through the 42nd constitutional amendment. In November, the Supreme Court rejected a batch of petitions seeking the deletion of the two terms from the Preamble to the Constitution. The court said there was no legitimate justification for challenging the constitutional amendment several decades later. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) said on Friday that the 'proposal' made by the Hindutva organisation ' exposes the RSS' long-standing objective of subverting the Constitution and its intent to transform India into a Hindu Rashtra, in pursuit of its Hindutva project.' The Congress had on Thursday night criticised Hosabale's remarks, saying that the RSS and the BJP's ideology stood in ' direct opposition ' to the Constitution. The remarks were not merely a suggestion, but a 'deliberate assault on the soul of our Constitution', alleged the Opposition party. 'It is part of a long-standing conspiracy to dismantle Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's vision for a just, inclusive and democratic India – something the RSS-BJP has always been plotting,' the party alleged. In 2015, a controversy erupted after the BJP-led Union government's newspaper advertisements on Republic Day featured a Preamble with the two words omitted. In September 2023, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed that the two words were missing from the Preamble in the copies of the Constitution distributed to the MPs in the new Parliament building.

"Bengal is not safe for women": BJP's Pradeep Bhandari slams TMC on Kolkata rape case
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 28 (ANI): BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress over the Kolkata alleged gangrape case and said that West Bengal is not safe for women under the Mamata Banerjee government. 'Mamata Banerjee's government supports the rape of women in Bengal. The accused in the Kasba gangrape is an active member of Mamata Banerjee's party, Trinamool Congress. Mamata Banerjee runs and protects an army of goons in Bengal for her appeasement politics and political dominance. People of Trinamool Congress commit rape against women, erase evidence and the TMC government makes a one-week case. A person of Trinamool Congress has been found guilty in the Kasba gang rape. Bengal is not safe for women. Despite Mamata Banerjee being a woman chief minister, her thinking is anti-women,' Bhandari told ANI. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo-motu cognisance of the alleged gangrape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area on June 25, with NCW member Archana Majumdar expressing outrage over the incident. Speaking to ANI, Majumdar said, 'It's shocking. As a mother, as a woman of West Bengal, I am very annoyed. We have taken suo-motu cognisance, we have asked DGP to answer within 72 hours in detail, including arrests, sections, crime scene examinations, medical examination, and everything...I will be meeting the victim today or tomorrow. I talked with the officer in charge of the concerned PS also. He reported that the victim has been sent to Calcutta National Medical College for medical examination. Three of the accused have been arrested already. Whatever action is being taken, my question is - why does it happen? Where is the security of women, of girl students?' BJP leader Dilip Ghosh also echoed similar sentiments, stating, 'Whenever a crime occurs in West Bengal, a TMC leader is found to be involved. The most evil and anti-social elements are in TMC. Holding the TMC flag seems to grant immunity from police action.' He further criticised the state's law and order situation, saying, 'Such an incident happening with a college student in broad daylight shows the poor law and order in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has taken the entire police administration to the Rath Yatra in Digha, as if there are no other pressing issues in Bengal.' On Wednesday evening, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba. The police have arrested all three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were former students or staff members of the same law college. According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for a proper investigation into the case. The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on Wednesday within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime. The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused, and the police have taken swift action in the matter. Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested on Thursday, near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused. The official had visited the site and kept it under protection till they had done a forensic examination. They requested custody remand for further investigation. (ANI)
