"Bengal is not safe for women": BJP's Pradeep Bhandari slams TMC on Kolkata rape case
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 28 (ANI): BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress over the Kolkata alleged gangrape case and said that West Bengal is not safe for women under the Mamata Banerjee government.
'Mamata Banerjee's government supports the rape of women in Bengal. The accused in the Kasba gangrape is an active member of Mamata Banerjee's party, Trinamool Congress. Mamata Banerjee runs and protects an army of goons in Bengal for her appeasement politics and political dominance. People of Trinamool Congress commit rape against women, erase evidence and the TMC government makes a one-week case. A person of Trinamool Congress has been found guilty in the Kasba gang rape. Bengal is not safe for women. Despite Mamata Banerjee being a woman chief minister, her thinking is anti-women,' Bhandari told ANI.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo-motu cognisance of the alleged gangrape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area on June 25, with NCW member Archana Majumdar expressing outrage over the incident.
Speaking to ANI, Majumdar said, 'It's shocking. As a mother, as a woman of West Bengal, I am very annoyed. We have taken suo-motu cognisance, we have asked DGP to answer within 72 hours in detail, including arrests, sections, crime scene examinations, medical examination, and everything...I will be meeting the victim today or tomorrow. I talked with the officer in charge of the concerned PS also. He reported that the victim has been sent to Calcutta National Medical College for medical examination. Three of the accused have been arrested already. Whatever action is being taken, my question is - why does it happen? Where is the security of women, of girl students?'
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh also echoed similar sentiments, stating, 'Whenever a crime occurs in West Bengal, a TMC leader is found to be involved. The most evil and anti-social elements are in TMC. Holding the TMC flag seems to grant immunity from police action.'
He further criticised the state's law and order situation, saying, 'Such an incident happening with a college student in broad daylight shows the poor law and order in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has taken the entire police administration to the Rath Yatra in Digha, as if there are no other pressing issues in Bengal.'
On Wednesday evening, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba. The police have arrested all three accused within 24 hours.
The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were former students or staff members of the same law college.
According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for a proper investigation into the case.
The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on Wednesday within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime.
The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused, and the police have taken swift action in the matter.
Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested on Thursday, near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused.
The official had visited the site and kept it under protection till they had done a forensic examination. They requested custody remand for further investigation. (ANI)

West Bengal: BJP leader arrested for allegedly stealing gold from jewellery shop; TMC shares his pics with major leaders
Somnath Sahoo, a BJP leader from West Bengal, has been arrested for allegedly stealing 100 grams of gold from a jewellery shop. The incident has caused a stir in West Midnapore's political circle. Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared a clip of the alleged incident on social media. 'Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police,' it wrote on Twitter (now X). 'The party that claims to be the guardian of law and order is busy sheltering criminals!' Mamata Banerjee's party added. TMC State General Secretary Kunal Ghosh claimed on social media that the BJP Yuva Morcha leader from Habibpur had been caught by Odisha Police while stealing jewellery worth ₹ 25 lakh. 'CCTV footage exposes him. Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police,' Ghosh wrote while sharing the accused's photo with BJP State President, Sukanta Majumdar, also Minister of State for Education of India. He also shared Sahoo's photo with actor-turned-politician Hiran Chatterjee, a BJP MLA. 'What link does the BJP State President have with a thief? Has he got a share? Clarify please. Whether these are facts or not,' Ghosh added. Sujoy Hazra, West Midnapore district TMC president, has mocked the BJP. 'BJP leaders are involved in human trafficking, drugs, and gold smuggling. This man says he's not with the BJP, but in this district, the BJP hardly exists. If you check, you'll find many BJP workers with similar shady records,' he said. BJP has claimed that Somnath Sahoo was once associated with the party but holds no post now. It added that Odisha, a BJP-ruled state, had arrested him without bias. That should be a lesson for Bengal's ruling party about good governance, it added. According to Anandabazar Patrika sources, Somnath was caught while trying to flee after stealing from a jewellery store in Jaleswar, Odisha. TMC claims he still holds the post of district youth wing secretary in the BJP. BJP's district spokesperson Arup Das denied any current link with Somnath. However, he claims Somnath's name may still appear on the party list because a new committee has yet to be formed. 'He was once connected to the BJP, but there's been no contact for over a year and a half,' the publication quoted Das as saying. 'TMC has no right to speak about such issues. They shelter murderers and rapists.' Arup added. MLA Hiran Chattopadhyay has said he doesn't feel awkward. 'Odisha BJP government and its police acted without bias and arrested a criminal. I praise them. The photo seems to be from the 2021 election campaign. Hundreds took photos with me. I can't know who among them is a thief or not,' he said.

Why Mamata is at war with EC again over voter rolls
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, on June 26, launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission (EC), alleging that its new guidelines for electoral roll verification amounted to a covert implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), with her state as the primary from Digha in Purba Medinipur, where she was overseeing preparations for the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Mamata said she had received two lengthy letters from the EC, each spanning 25-30 pages. While she had not been able to examine them fully, she said a cursory look revealed that the commission was now demanding a declaration form—Annexure D—from voters born between July 1, 1987 and December 2, 2004. This form, she alleged, required submission of birth certificates of both parents as proof of called the move a 'scam', questioning the logic behind targeting those born within this specific window. 'What is the rationale behind selecting these dates? Why isolate voters born after 1987? This is more dangerous than NRC and must be resisted by all Opposition parties,' she to EC sources, the new guidelines are part of a special intensive revision of electoral rolls, set to begin in Bihar ahead of assembly elections later this year. Under the rules, voters registered before 2003 will not be required to furnish additional documents. However, those registered after 2003 must submit identity and citizenship proof. The process includes door-to-door verification across the country, and in some states, the 2004 roll will serve as the baseline. Mamata expressed concern that the rollout in Bihar—where polls are imminent and the BJP is in power—is a diversionary tactic. 'They will not touch Bihar. The real target is Bengal, which heads to polls next year,' she said. 'This exercise is meant to disenfranchise young and vulnerable voters, particularly migrant workers, students, villagers and the uneducated, who may struggle to procure their parents' documents.'advertisementMamata alleged that valid voters' names were being arbitrarily deleted at the behest of the BJP. 'The names get cancelled at the last moment on the BJP's instructions,' she claimed. 'The EC is helping them (BJP) capture Bengal using agencies and manipulation.'Mamata voiced deep suspicion over the EC's impartiality, accusing it of functioning as an extension of the Union home ministry. She directly targeted home minister Amit Shah, saying, 'Modiji is the prime minister. I respect the chair. But Amit Shah is running the country. The current chief election commissioner was his secretary in the cooperation ministry.'In a clear message to political opponents and civil society, Mamata said the Trinamool Congress would be the first line of resistance against what she described as 'Emergency weapons being handed to the BJP'. She called on all Opposition parties to unite and reject the guidelines.'The EC cannot act unilaterally. We live in a federal democracy. Political parties and elected governments are not bonded labourers. The EC must consult all recognised parties before implementing such sweeping changes,' she also questioned the long-term intention behind the voter documentation drive. 'How will poor people produce their parents' birth certificates? This is a backdoor NRC. Let the commission come clean on its intention,' she said. 'Even in Assam, the NRC took six years and is still not accepted as a final list.'advertisementShe cited past incidents to underscore her mistrust. In February this year, she had flagged cases of duplicate voter identity cards in Bengal matching those in states like Rajasthan and Haryana. The party raised the issue with the EC, which admitted to flaws in the electoral rolls. 'Now they ask us to provide details of booth-level workers. Why should I reveal their identities to the commission?' she across the political spectrum are beginning to echo her concerns. CPI (ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya wrote to chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, warning that the current revision exercise mirrored the scale and nature of the Assam NRC, which failed to conclusively resolve citizenship also sounded an alarm over the potential detention of voters who may fail to meet the documentation criteria. 'Those who are studying or working outside must ensure their names remain on the rolls till the day of polling. I've been told that 100 migrant workers from Bengal have been detained in Odisha's Cuttack. Some are held in Balasore police station. Why are these incidents happening every day?' she voters to remain vigilant, Mamata warned that disenfranchising citizens under the pretext of document verification would eventually 'backfire on the BJP'. She concluded with a message of defiance: 'We are not opposed to a fair revision of the voter list. But we will not allow the disenfranchisement of genuine voters through such dubious methods.'Subscribe to India Today Magazine- Ends

Kolkata law student gangrape: BJP demands Mamata Banerjee's resignation
New Delhi, June 28 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today slammed the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led West Bengal government over the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata, accusing the state administration of shielding the accused, who reportedly have links to the ruling party's student wing. Addressing a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said that the brutal incident had not only shaken the conscience of the nation but also exposed what he called 'the institutional complicity' in West Bengal. 'This is not a matter where we seek clarification. We are demanding accountability. Mamata Banerjee must apologise and step down,' Patra said, questioning the "silence and inaction" of the State Chief Minister. He said, 'In a state governed by a woman Chief Minister, one would expect a stronger commitment to women's safety. But this level of cruelty and insensitivity is nothing short of terrifying.' While citing a slew of recent past rape cases reported from the State, Patra also condemned Trinamool party leaders reportedly making statements that 'the incident occurred inside the law college and the state government has nothing to do with it". Referring to the accused, Patra alleged that the primary suspect, Manojit Mishra, had previously held a position within the TMC's student wing. 'This is not just a case of sexual violence. The circumstances and the survivor's statement suggest it was a politically-enabled act of brutality,' he said, holding up the pictures of the primary accused with the TMC party's leaders. According to police, the assault occurred on the evening of June 15 inside South Calcutta Law College, located in Kolkata's Kasba area. The survivor, a first-year law student, was allegedly pinned down by two men while the third assaulted her in a security guard's room, after evicting the guard. Three accused—Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20)—were arrested within 24 hours of the complaint. On Saturday, police arrested the college's 55-year-old security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, for allegedly aiding the accused, bringing the total number of arrests to four. The First Information Report (FIR) reveals harrowing details, a portion of which were shared by Patra to the reporters. The survivor, in her statement, said she was ambushed shortly after a meeting linked to the TMC's student wing. Identified by the initials 'M', 'J', and 'P', the men allegedly cornered her around 7:30 PM. 'I begged him to let me go… I told him I had a boyfriend, that I loved him. I even touched his feet,' the complaint reads. Despite her pleas, the FIR said, she was reportedly dragged into a security room, beaten with a hockey stick, and threatened with violence against her loved ones. Hours after the ordeal, the survivor was released under threats to remain silent. Yet, she chose to speak up. 'Today, I've made up my mind. I want justice. As a law student, I now stand as a victim. And I want justice to be served,' she stated in her complaint. In response to the incident, BJP President JP Nadda has constituted a four-member fact-finding team comprising former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, along with MPs Biplab Deb and Manan Mishra. The team will visit the site, meet stakeholders, and submit a report to the party's top leadership, said Patra. UNI AJ RN
