UFC Vegas 103 predictions, odds, full card picks

Yahoo28-02-2025
Not all UFC Fight Nights are created equally. After a stellar return to Seattle last week, UFC stops back in the APEX Facility for UFC Vegas 103.
It's cards like these where a sales pitch probably won't even entice the most hardcore MMA fan. UFC Vegas 103 is legitimately the most glorified regional event ever. That has been said about many of these shows by now, but unfortunately, it rings true every time.
With that said, the main event is compelling, as Manel Kape finally aims to secure an ever-elusive UFC flyweight title shot against the surging Asu Almabayev. That's about it, though. Let's make our weekly picks, shall we?
Betting odds courtesy of BetMGM.
After a lackluster blow-off unanimous decision loss to rival Muhammad Mokaev last July, Kape did "the thing." What's "the thing," you ask? Well, "the thing" is different for every fighter. For Kape, it's performing like a Matrix-esque world champion against an opponent who had no business being in the cage with him.
Kape put on a show, styling on Bruno Silva before a third-round TKO win. Almabayev will receive a similar step-up to Silva's with the matchup. However, he's more well-equipped for it and proven as displayed throughout his 17-fight winning streak (4-0 in UFC, 21-2 overall).
The additional two rounds that a main event provides add an element of intrigue to the bout. Kape is the superior striker, utilizing his movement and combinations beautifully when he's on, as mentioned off the top. Almabayez will look to make the fight ugly and outwrestle Kape en route to a decision or submission — the latter of which has only happened twice.
There's more overall danger in Kape's game, especially on the feet. That's critical in a matchup like this, where he's at no clear disadvantage. If there is one, it's in the wrestling department. Even then, he should be able to hang and find success.
Almabayev can be a mainstay around the division's top, but all paths appear more open than ever for Kape to get his first UFC title shot.
Pick: Kape
Does the UFC hate Cody Brundage? Because he's not getting done any favors in public perception with a co-main event slot on any card after a loss to Bo Nickal on the UFC 300 main card. (Yes, that's an actual sentence.)
Brundage vs. Julian Marquez is much more of a coin flip than you'd think. It's been a rough go for Marquez, losing his last three all by knockout. Therefore, he desperately needs this win to keep his roster spot.
Marquez has just become too much of a brawler and his chin has deteriorated because of it. Brundage isn't known for being some wildly talented knockout artist, but he doesn't need to be to hurt Marquez in a wild exchange. Even if Brundage doesn't put Marques away, hurting him will make the inevitable takedown attempt all the easier, leading to a finish on the ground.
I like Brundage in this one as long as he avoids any big shots from "The Cuban Missile Crisis."
Pick: Brundage
So, Esteban Ribovics rules. After winning Uncrowned's 2024 Fight of the Year, you won't catch me missing any fight involving the Argentinian.
The odds on this matchup are a surprise, considering Nasrat Haqparast has been on a tear of his own with four straight wins over some notable veteran names like Jared Gordon and John Makdessi. It just goes to show the reasonable hype accrued by Ribovics for his latest performances.
As much damage as Ribovics dealt and delivered in his Daniel Zellhuber classic, Haqparast has more tread on the tires despite being only one year older than Ribovics, at 29. I forget the guy is still that young after eight years in the promotion.
This matchup should be an absolute banger on the feet and closer than the odds indicate. Haqparast has been stifled by solid clinch work or grappling threats in the past. Ribovics will be wise to that, mixing in takedowns or tie-ups on the cage when applicable. That's unless he gets drawn into another war like his last fight, which saw zero attempts to take the action to the mat, and we love him for that.
Pick: Ribovics
Hyder Amil vs. William Gomis should be another striker's delight.
Both are riding high on great winning streaks, with Amil undefeated in his 10-fight career. Gomis has just been the cleaner and more technical between the two, slicing and dicing his way to victories in all four Octagon appearances.
Gomis' takedown defense — or lack thereof — has been why he nearly lost fights against Joanderson Brito and Francis Marshall. Look for Amil to exploit that, but ultimately find himself a step behind while he gets picked apart by the rangy Frenchman.
Pick: Gomis
Danny Barlow and Sam Patterson are big welterweights, standing at 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-3, respectively.
In his last time out, Patterson was impressive, submitting Kiefer Crosbie with a first-round arm triangle choke. He continued to show he's a finisher through and through, only fighting to a decision twice in 14 fights (12-2-1).
Barlow, 29, has been tested in his pair of UFC bouts thus far, scraping by Nikolay Veretnikov and TKOing Josh Quinlan late. Ultimately, Barlow has more polished striking than his adversary Patterson, but the Brit's tenacious ground game and submission seeking will be too much.
A finish is a bold pick. Regardless, I'll take the upset on this one.
Pick: Patterson
Andrea Lee losing five straight and maintaining a roster spot is baffling, to say the least. Not that I want to see anyone jobless, of course. The UFC is typically just so trigger happy to remove fighters like her as the snowball starts to avalanche. It's the wrong type of history to make.
Montana De La Rosa has no business being the underdog against Luana Carolina. Stylistically, that should be as surefire a victory as it gets. Wrestle, wrestle, wrestle and wrestle some more, "MDLR."
Circling back to the flyweight division, Charles Johnson still finds himself buried on APEX event prelims despite an absurd resurgence in 2024, winning four in a row. Talk about wicked disrespect — that I will pile onto as I pick against him.
Quick picks:
Mario Pinto (-600) def. Austen Lane (+425)
Chepe Mariscal (-450) def. Ricardo Ramos (+350)
Douglas Silva de Andrade (+260) def. John Castaneda (-325)
JJ Aldrich (-210) def. Andrea Lee (+170)
Danny Silva (-220) def. Lucas Almeida (+180)
Montana De La Rosa (+105) def. Luana Carolina (-125)
Ramazan Temirov (+110) def. Charles Johnson (-135)

Aljamain Sterling breaks down 'high-stakes' Brian Ortega matchup at UFC Shanghai

Aljamain Sterling sees a win over Brian Ortega putting him in the UFC featherweight title picture. Sterling (24-5 MMA, 16-5 UFC) meets former title challenger Ortega (16-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) Saturday at UFC Fight Night 257 from Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. Their matchup will be a five-round co-main event. The former UFC bantamweight champion says he is on friendly terms with Ortega, which puts him in an unfamiliar spot. Although there are various contenders vying for a title shot, Sterling thinks a win over perennial contender Ortega puts him in the conversation. "It was more so for the ranking that Brian had," Sterling told MMA Junkie. "This is like the first person I'm going to fight that I'm cool with or have been cool with. This is going to be the most 'friend' type of fight that I'm ever going to have. He had the highest ranking at the time when I first came up to the division, and I wanted to have one fight and go straight to the title shot, but unfortunately it didn't go that way. They gave him Diego Lopes instead, and then he got a title shot. It is what it is. "Right now I think he's ranked No. 4, I think I'm seventh or eighth. So, I think this is a big win for me to possibly get back into the top five. If I can do that, things are going to be looking pretty good for me to getting a title shot opportunity, probably at this point after Lerone Murphy. Then there's Movsar (Evloev), then there's Jean Silva vs. Diego, so there's a lot of fun matchups happening at this weight class right now. I think for both Brian and I, this is one of those high-stakes matchups where winner takes all." Ortega is a proven jiu-jitsu threat, submitting the likes of former interim champion Yair Rodriguez, Cub Swanson, and Renato Moicano throughout his UFC career. However, if Sterling can get into his dominant grappling positions, he's confident he'll do well in the fight. "I think it (grappling) matches up well, but he does have some tricky stuff off of his back," Sterling said of Ortega. "On top, he's pretty tough. He's got a really nasty head-and-arm choke. I haven't really seen him go for other submissions, maybe a guillotine and a triangle. But, for the most part, he seems pretty well versed with chokes, so I've got to be careful with that. I think my top pressure, my passing game should be good enough to get to some good, dominant positions. Hopefully I can get to where I'm really, really strong, which is side control or the back mount."

Sophie Cunningham celebrates 29th birthday in style

The post Sophie Cunningham celebrates 29th birthday in style appeared first on ClutchPoints. Sophie Cunningham knows how to have a good time. The Indiana Fever star was celebrated by her teammates at practice while she ushers in her 29th birthday. The Fever guard was gifted a pink cowboy hat from her teammates, and they gave Cunningham a brief rodeo moment at practice. She put on her pink cowboy hat and danced through her teammates, who were all clapping for her. Cunningham was smiling and laughing her way through the Soul Train-esque runway with glee in celebration of her birthday. It didn't stop there. Cunningham received a lot of love from her friends and family online, which she reposted to her Instagram Story on Aug. 17. Her teammates showed her more love online as well, with Fellow Fever guard Lexie Hull shared a selfie of the two with a party background, and Fever guard Makayla Timpson posted a short video of Cunningham at a restaurant having a good time. Sophie Cunningham on joining the Indiana Fever Earlier this year, Cunningham joined the Fever in a four-team trade also involving the Connecticut Sun and the Dallas Wings. Prior to joining the Fever, she was on the Phoenix Mercury for six seasons. 'I think that since I've been out here in Phoenix it hasn't always been easy,' Cunningham told The New York Post. 'There's been a lot of trials. There's been a lot of lessons learned, a lot of experiences that I thought was just like any WNBA team, but I think it's built me. It's made me tougher. It's tested my persistence and my mental quite a bit. 'I think it's built me for something bigger and better, and the stage that we're about to be on with the players that I'm about to be with — I think I am built for this. While Cunningham is excited to now be on the Fever, she understands that it's going to take hard work and alignment amongst everyone to make it work. 'And that doesn't mean it's always going to be rainbows and butterflies … each season has their thing. But I just feel like when you're in a good mindset and you're around really good people who have a common goal [it works].' So far this season Cunningham is performing well as she averages 8.9 points, hitting 48.2% of her field goals and 44.1% of her three-pointers, 3.6 in rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 steals per game, according to ESPN. The next Fever game is against the Connecticut Sun today (Aug. 17) at 1 pm ET. Michael Page admits he tried too hard to 'impress' Dana White in first few UFC bouts: 'I've never been like that'

The middleweight division has suited Michael Page well since he made the jump up from welterweight in February. Want proof? Page is now a top-10 185-pounder in the latest UFC rankings update after UFC 319. Matched against one-time title challenger Jared Cannonier, Page put on a show with a vintage, systematic striking clinic this past Saturday en route to a decision win. The performance was arguably Page's best in the UFC thus far, and he attributes that success to a mental shift he underwent in recent months. The 38-year-old former kickboxer debuted in the UFC only last year after a decade-long run in Bellator, and "MVP" admitted on Uncrowned's "The Ariel Helwani Show" that the pressure of appeasing his new bosses and changing his style had weighed heavily on his mind during his first few Octagon appearances. "I kind of knew what I was walking into, and that was definitely part of my decision-making when I wanted to come to the UFC," Page said. "Historically, [UFC CEO Dana White] doesn't tend to like any of that kind of [showboating] stuff, which was actually a massive worry for me coming to the UFC. But in my eyes, I knew I wanted to come here anyway, and I also can't care about somebody else. This is what makes me me. The fact that I'm there now, I'm going to refuse to be pushed or moved into anything else apart from myself. I am the best. I am the most entertaining when I am myself, and even trying to care about what important figures obviously care about and want to see is just not even in my head anymore. "I think that's part of the pressure, where a lot of these guys coming over from Bellator, they feel immediately they want to impress Dana. They want to impress the heads [of the UFC], and they really want to. For me? Nah. Be myself. I'm an impressive person. I bring eyes, I bring excitement. I bring magic to the cage, which not many people can do, and I'm just going to keep being myself." As he alluded to, Page has been one of the few recent Bellator transplants to make a successful transition to the UFC and gain momentum. Even at UFC 319, fellow former stablemate on the other side of the tracks, Aaron Pico, suffered a devastating knockout loss in his debut against Lerone Murphy. Ultimately, Page feels good and strong at middleweight, despite still being uncertain about whether he'll stay at the weight class or return to 170 pounds. He admitted that if he stays at 185 pounds, it'll require some strength adjustments, considering the success Cannonier had late in their three-round clash. Outside of that last-minute surge from his opponent, Page was cruising in Chicago. "I was just having fun. That is how I used to be," Page said of his performance. "Whereas before, I think I was trying to impress. I felt myself trying to impress the UFC crowd and trying to impress the likes of [UFC CBO] Hunter [Campbell] and Dana White, trying to impress just everybody. I've never been like that. I've always just been myself, and impressive things happen because I'm being myself. This is the first time I seriously was just in the old-school 'MVP' flow state, and it felt amazing." Page has only lost once in the UFC — a June 2024 decision defeat to top welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry in Page's final 170-pound appearance before moving up in weight. Although the contender pool is relatively crowded at welterweight, Page presumably wouldn't be far down the totem pole if he does drop back down to the division, depending on who he's matched with for a return. Former champion Leon Edwards has been of interest to "MVP," but, of course, the current titleholder Jack Della Maddalena is of the highest intrigue for the British showman. "'JDM,' just stylistically, I know he's got the belt, and I have to get in that position to ask for a shot at the belt," Page said, "but stylistically, I feel like I can win that fight."
