Sophie Cunningham celebrates 29th birthday in style
Sophie Cunningham knows how to have a good time.
The Indiana Fever star was celebrated by her teammates at practice while she ushers in her 29th birthday. The Fever guard was gifted a pink cowboy hat from her teammates, and they gave Cunningham a brief rodeo moment at practice. She put on her pink cowboy hat and danced through her teammates, who were all clapping for her. Cunningham was smiling and laughing her way through the Soul Train-esque runway with glee in celebration of her birthday.
It didn't stop there. Cunningham received a lot of love from her friends and family online, which she reposted to her Instagram Story on Aug. 17. Her teammates showed her more love online as well, with Fellow Fever guard Lexie Hull shared a selfie of the two with a party background, and Fever guard Makayla Timpson posted a short video of Cunningham at a restaurant having a good time.

Earlier this year, Cunningham joined the Fever in a four-team trade also involving the Connecticut Sun and the Dallas Wings. Prior to joining the Fever, she was on the Phoenix Mercury for six seasons.
'I think that since I've been out here in Phoenix it hasn't always been easy,' Cunningham told The New York Post. 'There's been a lot of trials. There's been a lot of lessons learned, a lot of experiences that I thought was just like any WNBA team, but I think it's built me. It's made me tougher. It's tested my persistence and my mental quite a bit.
'I think it's built me for something bigger and better, and the stage that we're about to be on with the players that I'm about to be with — I think I am built for this.
While Cunningham is excited to now be on the Fever, she understands that it's going to take hard work and alignment amongst everyone to make it work.
'And that doesn't mean it's always going to be rainbows and butterflies … each season has their thing. But I just feel like when you're in a good mindset and you're around really good people who have a common goal [it works].'
So far this season Cunningham is performing well as she averages 8.9 points, hitting 48.2% of her field goals and 44.1% of her three-pointers, 3.6 in rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 steals per game, according to ESPN. The next Fever game is against the Connecticut Sun today (Aug. 17) at 1 pm ET.

Fever's Sophie Cunningham out for remainder of season after suffering knee injury in win over Connecticut Sun
The injury bug has spread through the Indiana Fever this season, and it bit veteran guard Sophie Cunningham over the weekend. Cunningham went down in the second quarter of a comeback, overtime win against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. The team announced Tuesday the right knee injury she suffered will sideline her for the remainder of the season. According to a report from the IndyStar, Cunningham tore her MCL. Connecticut guard Bria Hartley drove to the basket and, on her way down, collided with Cunningham's leg. Cunningham immediately grabbed at her knee before lying down along the baseline, where she continued to clutch her knee in intense pain as the game briefly continued. When play stopped, she was attended to and ultimately helped to the locker room. Cunningham was enjoying a successful first season in Indiana, where she arrived as as part of a four-team trade between the Fever, Sun, Phoenix Mercury and Dallas Wings in January. After shooting 42.2% from the field over her six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, she shot 43.2% from 3 across 30 games with the Fever this year. Her overall field-goal percentage bumped up to 46.9%, and she averaged 8.6 points per game, registering 15-plus points six times. Cunningham skyrocketed in popularity after defending Fever superstar Caitlin Clark with a flagrant 2 foul and subsequent viral melee in the final minute of a June 17 game against the Sun. Her social-media following and jersey sales have since soared, and she has debuted her own podcast. Decimated at the guard position this year, especially of late, the Fever also announced Tuesday they have signed Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract while releasing fellow guard Kyra Lambert five days into her hardship contract. Peddy, who has been in the WNBA since 2019, most recently played on a hardship contract for the Los Angeles Sparks, averaging 5 points and 2.7 assists earlier this season. Peddy will join Odyssey Sims, whom the Fever signed to a hardship contract Aug. 10, to help replenish their point guard depth, with Clark still missing time and both Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson out for the year. The Fever will be eligible for a third hardship spot once Cunningham misses Friday's game against the Minnesota Lynx. At that time, Indiana can either re-sign Lambert or bring aboard another player. Fever coach Stephanie White told reporters ahead of last Sunday's game against the Sun that she hopes Clark will return to action before the regular season wraps Sept. 9. Clark, a two-time All-Star and last season's WNBA Rookie of the Year, has made only 13 appearances in 2025. She's dealt with four muscle injuries, the latest a right groin issue that has kept her out since July 15. Tuesday's roster movement, however, isn't related to Clark's potential return, a Fever spokesperson clarified to IndyStar.

Ultimately, White says that the team is taking things one day at a time and she's confident in whatever combination of ladies Indiana is able to put out on the court. "We have great leadership in that locker room," she stated. "This group is tight. They're connected. They stay together. I think, for us, reiterating we've got to be where our feet are. We can't look too far behind us. We can't look too far in front of us. We've got to make sure that we're focused on one day at a time." Fans are concerned "Not the answer we want to hear.
