'Very special' film with perfect rating will leave 'everyone sobbing'

Nowhere Special, starring James Norton, has been awarded a 100 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been described as a 'measured, emotional ripper'
Nowhere Special, a certified tearjerker, is the brainchild of Uberto Pasolini, who served as its producer, writer, and director.

The film poignantly narrates the tale of John, a single father who, after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, must find a suitable adoptive family for his four year old son, Michael.

Set against the backdrop of Northern Ireland, Nowhere Special subtly delves into themes of love, loss, and profound familial bonds as John embarks on the heartrending task of ensuring his son's future.

Inspired by a true story, Pasolini reportedly drew from an article he read about a terminally ill father who had to secure a new family for his son before his impending death.
Nowhere Special made its world debut at the Venice Film Festival in September 2020 and subsequently hit UK cinemas on 16 July 2021. The film saw its US theatrical release on 26 April 2024, reports the Express.
The deeply moving drama features James Norton and Daniel Lamont in lead roles, with support from Eileen O'Higgins, Valene Kane, Keith McErlean, and Valerie O'Connor. Norton's compelling portrayal of the terminally ill John earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards in 2021.

With a stellar 100 per cent critics approval rating and an audience approval rating of 93 per cent on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, Nowhere Special has certainly left a lasting impression on both critics and viewers alike.
One critic praised the film, saying: "This Irish drama is what happens when little movies get it right - respecting the situation instead of exploiting it, and exploring a difficult choice instead of suggesting that the built-in emotion of the challenge is all that's needed."

Another described it as: "A measured, emotional ripper... a 35-year-old window cleaner and single father who must find a home for his four-year-old son when he learns he has only a few months to live... Details accrue; anger steels. A steady hand gets the story through."
A third critic was moved by the film, writing: "Nowhere Special is something special indeed. If you aren't shedding well-earned tears by the end of this film you simply are not human."
Meanwhile, another reviewer noted: "For a film about loneliness and death, it's tender, intelligent and life-affirming without ever being maudlin and mawkish. A rare and distinguished film indeed."

Audience reactions were equally heartfelt, with one viewer commenting: "Difficult to watch in places (particularly if you are the father of a young boy) but astonishing performances by the two leads make this one of the best films I have ever seen."
One fan raved: "I watched it and it was amazing. I haven't seen a film this good in many years. I suggest having a box of tissues handy. Right from the start it starts to pull on your heartstrings and doesn't let go. James Norton and the young newcomer, Daniel Lamont were brilliant onscreen together. This is a film I would recommend to others."
Another viewer shared their thoughts, saying: "Sad, poignant story that'll make you cry but a lovely performance from James Norton in the lead and delightful chemistry with his on screen son Daniel Lamont."
Nowhere Special can be rented for a cosy night in on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video at the cost of £3.49.

He said: "Ever since the fight there with Katie, people are seeing the two of us back together, even some of the s*** you hear about that. "I was reading somewhere that Katie Taylor never got married because of her father, he wouldn't let her. "Katie's married, you know, and I'm thinking, 'where are you getting this s*** from?'" Dad and daughter reunited to work together in the lead-up to the 39-year-old's sensational trilogy win over Amanda Serrano on July 11. Pete had coached her during her amateur career, peaking with her winning an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012. However, they parted ways after Pete split from Katie's mum Bridget. Taylor controversially lost her title at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and turned pro later that year, and has been trained by Ross Enamait ever since. In an exclusive interview with the Irish Sun a week on from her victory over the Puerto Rican, Pete sought to dispel preconceptions concerning their relationship. He said: "We posted online that we were training together, but we were still very close. I was still over visiting her. Pete Taylor opens up on training with Katie Taylor "This is a media thing that me and Katie got back together for the fight. It's not true. "We've always been close, and we've been talking for the last five or six years. It was just that I didn't get involved in the training. "We were always talking boxing. That's just natural. When I call over to her, we go to the gym together. "She just asked me to help out in this camp, and that was it - but it wasn't that we rekindled this relationship. "We were close all the time. "People love these stories. I think they must have boring lives or something, because they're so interested in other people's lives. "I don't post anything about my own personal life on Instagram. Katie's the same, and then, when we put it up, you could say it went viral. "We've always been close. I was actually shocked that it went so viral, to tell you the truth."

Mrs Brown's Boys viewers left in utter disbelief as controversial show returns to BBC

Fans have reacted sharply to the return of Mrs Brown's Boys, with many on social media branding it unfunny and questioning why it was ever commissioned BBC sitcom Mrs Brown's Boys returned to screens tonight for the start of its fifth full-length series, despite enduring a turbulent few years marked by falling ratings and a high-profile racism controversy involving its creator and star, Brendan O'Carroll. ‌ First aired in 2011, the comedy became a holiday fixture and enjoyed huge popularity in its early years. Its 2013 Christmas Day special drew 11.52 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched festive programmes of the decade. ‌ However, viewership has steadily declined. The show last appeared in the top ten on Christmas Day in 2020, attracting 3.8 million viewers. It comes after Brendan, 69, finally announced the future of Mrs Brown to fans. ‌ The series has long divided audiences and critics, and was recently labelled the 'worst ever BBC show' by some viewers on social media. Comments on X during tonight's broadcast included: 'Worst programme in human history should've never been commissioned' and 'Just speechless… I honestly don't know one person who thinks this show is remotely funny.' Another insisted: "This show needs to be axed asap. It's not one bit funny." Someone else fumed: "I actually hate this show with a passion and I'm Irish and from Dublin and I GET that kind of sense of humour." ‌ In 2023, Mrs Brown's Boys faced further scrutiny after O'Carroll made a racial slur during rehearsals for the Christmas special. Crew members were reportedly 'shocked' by the remark and lodged complaints with BBC bosses. The broadcaster suspended production and launched an investigation. O'Carroll later apologised, expressing 'deep regret' over what he called a 'clumsy attempt at a joke.' ‌ Speaking publicly about the incident for the first time on Irish YouTube programme Conversations With Gerry Kelly, O'Carroll claimed his words had been 'completely taken out of context.' He also argued that the episode ultimately had a positive impact. ‌ 'The one thing that that incident did is give great awareness about racism, and great awareness about the BBC, they don't take any messing… However, I think in the long run it was a good thing, because it got people talking about it.' O'Carroll, who has won the National Television Award for Best Comedy six times for Mrs Brown's Boys, has made it clear he is unfazed by negative feedback. 'The ones that love me, I love them, and the ones that don't, f*** them,' he told Kelly, adding that those who dislike the show should simply 'pick up the remote and change the station.' ‌ Despite its dwindling audience, the series maintains a loyal fan base and continues to be a fixture in the BBC's comedy line-up. The new series, which began tonight, marks a fresh chapter for the show as it seeks to recapture some of its former success in the face of ongoing criticism.

'Gruesomely romantic horror movie' lands huge 90% Rotten Tomatoes score

Together, starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, landed in US cinemas this week, ahead of a UK premiere on August 15. Michael Shanks' scare-fest follows lovebirds Tim and Millie who move out to the country, where they have a bizarre, supernatural encounter. However, things take a creepy turn when their flesh begins fusing to each other, bringing them much closer than they ever anticipated. Although the flick hasn't been out long, it has gone down very well with film buffs, and currently claims a near-perfect score from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a 79% mark from fans. Heaping praise on the film, Movie Brief's Michael Nordine raved: 'One of the more gruesomely romantic horror movies ever made.' 'A giddy grotesquerie that has midnight-movie crowd-pleaser written all over it,' Nick Schager of the Daily Beast agreed. Owen Gleiberman, for Variety, penned: 'It's fun (in a rather bumptious way), it stars two very good actors playing a couple who have as many issues as couples do in real life, and it works as a totally unhinged yet far from mindless thriller built around a Big Idea.' Deadline Hollywood Daily's Glenn Garner hailed: 'Although Alison Brie and husband Dave Franco have shared the screen in the past, they truly sink into each other with some skin-crawling, albeit heartfelt and hilarious performances in writer-director Michael Shanks' feature debut Together.' As the Guardian's Benjamin Lee added: 'A convincingly gory argument for being single.' 'Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other,' the official synopsis reads. 'With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.' More Trending Filmmaker Michael previously opened up about the unsettling plot in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, admitting that it was inspired by his own relationship. 'I think when anyone is in a long-term relationship, there comes a point where you realize you have the same friends, eat the same food, breathe the same air – you start to wonder if you can truly tell where you end and your partner begins,' he told the outlet. 'I thought that was a really compelling place to start to examine in a relationship – what if you took that old cliche of sharing a life and took it to somewhere visceral, and horrifically literal?' Together is in US cinemas now, ahead of a UK release on August 15. Got a story?
