Rivian expects tariffs to increase car production costs by 'a couple thousand dollars per unit'

Rivian is expected to experience some headwinds in the near future due to the rapidly evolving policies that impact EV production in the US.
Rivian's CEO, RJ Scaringe, said during the company's second-quarter earnings call on Tuesday that the "changes to EV tax credits, regulatory credits, trade regulation, and tariffs are expected to have an impact on the results and the cash flow of our business."
The company increased its anticipated EBITDA losses — or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization — to a range of $2 billion to $2.5 billion for the 2025 fiscal year. That's up from the previous guidance of $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion reported last quarter.
Claire McDonough, Rivian's chief financial officer, provided a sobering picture of how the policy environment will have an impact on Rivian's business.
The CFO said the company expects to "roughly break even" for total gross profit by the end of 2025. Total sales in regulatory credits — or credits that automakers receive in the US to incentivize EV production — are expected to be around $160 million, nearly half of its prior outlook of $300 million in regulatory credit sales, according to McDonough.
Production costs will also increase for the remainder of the year, McDonough said.
Recent policy changes will impact Rivian's cash flow, she said, and "this includes increased tariffs, which had a minimal impact during the second quarter but are expected to have a net impact of a couple thousand dollars per unit for the remainder of 2025."
Guidance and results for Rivian's second quarter provide a snapshot of how the Trump Administration's move to eliminate federal incentives for EVs, such as a $7,500 clean vehicle credit, will impact automakers.
Tesla, the leading EV company in the US, and other automakers have been urging consumers to buy their electric cars before the tax credits expire later this year.
Scaringe previously told BI that the end of the EV credits will have minimal impact on his company, but it will ultimately slow down US automakers' momentum to transition from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles.
"I think that the move away from some of the tailwinds that were previously in place for electric vehicles is actually good for Rivian, it's good for Tesla, it's bad for the US auto industry, and it's bad for my kids," he said at the time.
Despite the near-term challenges, Rivian appears to be on track to deliver its much-anticipated R2 model, a $45,000 to $50,000 midsize SUV expected to come next year.
Scaringe said during the call that Rivian has secured contracts with suppliers that ensure the cost of making R2 will be about "half that of R1."
"We've spent the last two years in development and time negotiating with suppliers — to put in place contracts that we both selected —suppliers that can scale with us and ramp appropriately, but also can deliver a much lower cost structure," he said.
The company reported a mixed second-quarter earnings result, slightly beating Wall Street estimates on revenue — $1.3 billion vs. $1.28 billion estimate — while reporting higher operating losses than anticipated. Total operating expenses were $908 million, Rivian reported, slightly missing the Street's estimate of $876.2 million.
Rivian's stock fell about 5% after trading hours.

This decision was appealed by the Trump administration and will now go to the First Circuit Court of Appeals. The other preliminary injunction allows Harvard to host international students. No appeal has been filed on that decision. Meanwhile, Harvard's first lawsuit focuses on the stripping of $2.6 billion of Harvard's federal dollars by the Trump administration. The federal judge has yet to make a decision on the case. At the end of July, The New York Times reported that Harvard University was open to a potential $500 million settlement as a means of ending the months-long battle with the Trump administration. However, faculty at Harvard close with President Alan Garber dispute that, according to three unnamed sources in reporting by The Harvard Crimson. The sources said that information was leaked to the press by White House officials and that the university is interested in resolving the dispute through its two federal court cases, according to the outlet. What has happened between the Trump admin and Harvard? The Trump administration has gone after Harvard since April, cutting billions of dollars. Demanding an overhaul of Harvard's leadership structure, admissions and hiring — the federal government warned the school could risk losing $9 billion in funding. Harvard rejected those demands, stating they seek to 'invade university freedoms long recognized by the Supreme Court.' Then the fight over funding occurred. It began with a $2.2 billion funding freeze on April 14 after the school refused to comply with the federal administration's demands. In response, Harvard filed a lawsuit on April 21, arguing that its constitutional rights had been violated by the government's threats to pull billions of dollars in funding. Harvard President Garber also signed onto a letter with hundreds of other university presidents pushing back against 'government overreach and political interference' by the Trump administration. At the beginning of May, the Trump administration said it would bar Harvard University from acquiring new federal grants while the school continues to refuse to comply with the administration's demands for change on its campus. A few days later, eight federal agencies cut $450 million in grants and then the United States Department of Health and Human Services cut $60 million in grants from the university. Some of Harvard's schools, including its School of Public Health, took to social media to ask for donations after nearly every single federal grant had been terminated. Other investigations and threats have been made against the institution, some of which have focused on threatening the university's ability to enroll international students. This prompted Harvard to open a second lawsuit against the Trump administration over its ability to accept international students. Most recently, the State Department opened an investigation into Harvard University's use of international visas. However, nearly a decade of delayed promises, a competitive electric vehicle market, and CEO Elon Musk's forays into politics dampened enthusiasm for the launch among early backers of the company. What's happening? After Tesla opened its Mumbai showroom at the Maker Maxity mall July 15, TechCrunch spoke with supporters who pre-reserved their Model 3s in 2016, when Musk first promised he'd be bringing his EVs to the Indian market. For early backers such as Vishal Gonda, who prebooked his Tesla in a matter of hours after reservations went live in 2016, the promise fulfilled came far too late. "I felt a little bit underwhelmed," the founder and CEO of fitness-tech startup GOQii said, detailing how it took multiple emails for Tesla to refund his $1,000 reservation fee. Gonda added that he doesn't intend to purchase a Tesla at this time. "The joke was, had we invested that money in Tesla IPO stock, we would have made more money," he said of an initial public offering. Other former Tesla enthusiasts shared similar sentiments, including Varun Krishnan, founder of Chennai-based tech blog FoneArena. "It is frustrating to see Tesla take so long," Krishnan said. Why is this important? The delayed opening wasn't the only factor turning early backers' love for Tesla into what Amit Bhawani, founder of tech blog Phoneradar, called the "coldest launch," per TechCrunch. In addition to their public health and environmental benefits, given their status as zero-tailpipe-pollution vehicles, a major draw of EVs is that they are easier and cheaper to maintain than gas-guzzlers because they have fewer moving parts and don't require oil changes. However, uncertainty remains over how Tesla will handle its after-sales care in India. What's more, the automaker's Supercharger network there isn't yet up and running. Musk said that Tesla would deploy V4 Superchargers before beginning EV deliveries, as reported by The Economic Times. However, early Tesla supporters in India told TechCrunch that they were hesitant to believe those promises after their previous experiences. Electric two-wheelers accounted for around 60% of all EV sales. "These days, everyone can get a beautiful, amazing, super powerful electric vehicle in India," Bhawani told TechCrunch. Despite Tesla's disappointing sales numbers in the first half of 2025 and its struggling image, Khattar believes the company's name recognition could be enough to pique the interest of consumers considering the benefits of EVs — regardless of brand. According to Teslarati, analyst Alex Potter released an investor note, estimating that Tesla would earn $3 billion in zero-emission vehicle credits, only $500,000 less than in 2024. Potter posited that even with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's cutting of EV incentives, such as the $7,500 federal tax credit on qualified EV purchases, the effect on the EV titan will likely be slight. "Tesla will still book around $3B in credits this year, followed by $2.3B in 2026," Potter said, according to an X post Teslarati shared from software developer Hardick Shah (AIStockSavvy), who posted a screenshot of the investor note.
