Chennai: Kancheepuram police have restricted the entry of buses into the town limits on Saturday in view of the
Varadaraja Perumal Temple
car festival, as part of the ongoing annual
Brahmotsavam festival
.
To manage the expected influx of devotees, five temporary bus terminals were set up at key entry points around the town.
These terminals are located at the New Railway Station, Oli Mohammedpettai junction, Old Railway Station, Orikkai junction, and Collector Office junction, an official release said.
Authorities estimate that over two lakh pilgrims from across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states will participate in Saturday's chariot procession. Passengers travelling to Kancheepuram are advised to alight at the designated terminals and proceed to the temple on foot or via alternative transport arrangements.
Detailing the security measures, Kancheepuram district superintendent of police K Shanmugham said that around 1,000 police personnel, local task force members, and volunteers will be deployed for crowd management and public safety. He also urged devotees to remain vigilant and safeguard their valuables.
The temple is expected to see a surge of visitors from Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, and other parts of South India. TNN

Eight trains to get additional coaches

T'puram: has enhanced passenger capacity by adding more coaches to eight trains in the state, including expanding the Mangalore-T'puram Vande Bharat from eight to 16 coaches. Kasaragod Vande Bharat had already been upgraded to 20 coaches four months ago. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With educational institutions reopening, seven heavily used passenger trains received additional coaches, increasing from 12 to 14 carriages between May 20-22. These include services on the Kottayam-Nilambur, Kollam-Alappuzha, Nagercoil-Kottayam and T'puram routes. T'puram divisional railway manager Manish Thaplyal emphasized that these improvements reflect careful analysis of passenger needs and demand patterns. Over past year, nine major express trains got additional coaches, including popular services to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and important pilgrimage destinations. The expansion addresses increasing demand from both long-distance travellers and daily commuters. Due to track congestion limiting new train services, the railway is focusing on adding coaches to existing trains. The Dec 2024 to May 2025 period saw peak temporary augmentation, with 31 train pairs enhanced across 1,023 trips to meet seasonal demand. TNN
