"Should've Said No": Sachin Tendulkar Slammed By India Great On Renaming Of Pataudi Trophy

The five-match Test series between India and England ended in a 2-2 draw, giving fans a memorable cricketing action. This series, which was Shubman Gill 's first stint as India's Test captain, was renamed as the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy from the iconic Patuadi Trophy. This move grabbed everyone's attention as many fans and former cricketers raised their voices and stated that it was an insult to the great Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. However, the series was still renamed in the honour of former England pacer James Anderson and India great Sachin Tendulkar. Recently, India great Karsan Ghavri slammed the BCCI and even Sachin for not taking a firm stand against the change of the series name. He even name dropped Sunil Gavaskar and stated that if the name of Border-Gavaskar would have been changed then the former opener "would have shake the whole India". "That is very wrong. Number one, the Australia-West Indies series is always called the Frank Worrell Trophy. The India-Australia Trophy is always called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If its name changed, Gavaskar poore India ko hila ke rakh dega (Gavaskar will shake the whole of India)," Ghavri told Vicky Lalwani on the latter's YouTube channel. "The BCCI should've put its foot down with the MCC and the ECB. Tiger's name shouldn't have been removed," he added. Ghavri then went on to criticise Sachin for not "putting his foot down" and not honouring the stature of Pataudi. "In the same context, when it came to Sachin Tendulkar, that this trophy would be changed, and this trophy would be named after you and Anderson, Sachin should've said no. Objection is different," said Ghavri. "In the first place, you should've put your foot down and should've said 'No, I don't want to use my name because Tiger Pataudi's name is already there. He's a legend of Indian cricket. If you want to give medals, use our name. Trophy's name should remain the same'. First of all, this question should've never been raised. You're degrading somebody of a great stature," he added.

Sachin Tendulkar Slammed As India Legend's Stature Degraded: 'Sunil Gavaskar Poore Hindustan Ko Hila Dega'

Karsan Ghavri says by renaming India-England Test series to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Tiger Pataudi's name has been degraded. The criticism over the renaming of India-England Test series continues with former pacer Karsan Ghavri slamming the administrators for removing legendary captain Tiger Pataudi's name from the trophy. The winner of the Test series between the two teams in England was traditionally presented with Pataudi Trophy. However, it was rechristened to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year resulting in backlash. Ghavri has challenged to rename the Border-Gavaskar Trophy – played for the Test series between India and Australia – and then brace for the reaction from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. 'That is very wrong. Number one, Pataudi Trophy has been going on for a long time. The Australia-West Indies series has always been called Frank Worrell Trophy. India-Australia Test series has always been called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Try changing the name of that and see what Gavaskar does. Wo poora Hindustan ko hila ke rakh dega (Gavaskar would've shaken the whole country). The BCCI should've put its foot down with the MCC and the ECB. Tiger's name should not be removed from the trophy," said Ghavri on Vicky Lalwani's YouTube channel. What Tendulkar Said on Renaming While acknowledging that it wasn't in his power to ensure that Pataudi Trophy wasn't retired, Tendulkar did reveal he spoke to the administrators that the legacy should continue in some manner. '…I was determined to ensure that the (Pataudi) legacy was kept intact," Tendulkar told Revsportz. 'When I got to know, I called the (Pataudi) family and had a conversation. Thereafter, I spoke to Mr. Jay Shah (ICC chairman), the BCCI and the ECB, and mentioned to them that something had to be done to ensure the legacy stayed on." 'They heard my point of view, and thereafter we got on a second call where it was decided that the Pataudi name will be associated with the series, and the winning captain will be awarded the Pataudi Medal of Excellence. I have always respected my seniors, and did everything in my power to make sure that the Pataudi legacy continues to be associated with this series," he added. Ghavri though says Tendulkar could have done more to ensure the trophy was not discontinued. 'Objection is different. In the first place, he (Tendulkar) should've put his foot down and should've said 'Don't use my name because Tiger Pataudi's name is already there. He's one of our legends. If you want to give medals, use our name and hand it to the winning team. Trophy's name should've remained the same'," he said. 'BCCI is everything. First of all, this question should've never been raised. You're degrading somebody of a great stature," he added. view comments First Published: News cricket Sachin Tendulkar Slammed As India Legend's Stature Degraded: 'Sunil Gavaskar Poore Hindustan Ko Hila Dega' Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Bumrah Must Not Be Your Frontline Pick…': Selectors Asked to Have Guts to Take ‘Hard Calls'

Last Updated: Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar asserted that players who are fit and eager to perform should be preferred ahead of the big names. The discussion around Jasprit Bumrah's limited availability for a longer Test series doesn't seem to be ending soon. The World no. 1 was part of India's squad for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy but featured in just three Test matches, citing workload management. Though India won both matches that Bumrah skipped, several the ace pacer's absences due to his workload management is being questioned. Several experts have opined that a player should only be picked in the squad if he is available for selection for every match, barring any injury sustained during the tour. While the debate continues, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has stated that Bumrah shouldn't be the team's frontline pick. In his latest column for the Hindustan Times, Manjrekar lauded India's terrific performance in England but had a critical approach while writing about Bumrah. 'The game will always show us the mirror, however much we try and gloss over things. It was poetic justice that the two Tests India won were two matches Bumrah did not play." 'This should embolden the Indian selectors to make some hard choices when it comes to big-name players. This series has been a great lesson to them and to us too, the two Test victories India achieved did not feature Virat (Kohli), (Cheteshwar) Pujara, Rohit (Sharma), (Mohammed) Shami and Bumrah too! It reminded us of the eternal truth of sport and life, no one, however great, is indispensable. 'And this is how India must handle Bumrah. If he cannot play more than two matches in a row or sometimes even more than one, he must not be your frontline pick," Manjrekar wrote. The former cricketer asserted that players who are fit and eager to perform should be preferred ahead of the big names. 'Players who are match fit, eager, keen to play and perform should be picked any day for me over a highly skilled player. It will motivate such enthusiastic players even more," Manjrekar further wrote. 'In this series, Akash Deep & Siraj replicated the Bumrah impact in the two wins, of course, this is not likely to become a pattern, but it should give the selectors the guts to take hard calls on big-name players, just as they do with Kuldeep Yadav. 'As for Bumrah, of whom I am a fan, if he really wants to serve Indian Test cricket, longevity and durability are an imperative for him; it's after all the true test of a great athlete is to still turn up when not 100% fit and deliver. 'Indian cricket must not adjust for Bumrah, Bumrah must. That is, if he wants to," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
