China wants to bring commercial ties with the United States back to a state of healthy and sustainable development, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said on Friday, calling on the US to behave in a way that befits its major country status.
China's trade has strong resilience and momentum, and the country will expand imports as well as exports in its next five-year plan, Wang said at a press conference.
The country's policy support for exports has "bucked the trend" amid a complex external environment, Wang said.
He characterised the ups and downs in China-US trade relations as having taught both sides that they need each other.
"A forced decoupling and severing of supply chains is impossible, and some trade between the two sides is difficult to replace, at least in the short term," he said.
"Having weathered many storms, the two sides remain important economic and trade partners to each other," Wang said, adding that the two countries can manage tensions through "equal dialogue and consultations".
US President Donald Trump hiked tariffs on Chinese products to over 100% earlier this year, before walking back much of the hefty duties in a trade truce with Beijing reached in May.
China has until August 12 to reach a deal with Washington to avoid Trump's reinstating additional import curbs imposed during tit-for-tat tariff exchanges in April and May.
The current overall tariff level imposed by the US on China is at a "still high" 53.6%, Wang told the press conference.
"There are no winners in a trade war. China does not want a trade war, but it is not afraid of one," he reiterated.
"Major countries should act like major countries. They must shoulder their responsibilities," he said, adding that China would not change its stance in protecting its national interests.

TTP terrorist 'behind Chinese engineers attack' killed in Karachi operation

Listen to article Three terrorists from banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), including one allegedly involved in last year's attack on Chinese engineers, were killed in a joint operation by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and intelligence agencies in Karachi's Manghopir area late Sunday night. On 5 November 2024, a private security guard at a textile mill in Karachi opened fire and seriously injured two Chinese nationals. According to police, deceased suspect, identified as Zafran, had a Rs20 million bounty on him and was accused of involvement in the 2024 Liberty Textile attack targetting Chinese nationals. He was also linked to the Karachi Police Office (KPO) assault. Read: Two Chinese injured in shooting at Karachi mill The incident prompted a pledge by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to enhance security for Chinese citizens in Pakistan. He emphasised that the protection of Chinese nationals remained a top priority, especially given ongoing China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, vital to the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Read more: Ensuring security of Chinese nationals govt's top priority: Mohsin Naqvi CTD Chief Raja Umar Khattab said the raid was launched based on credible intelligence regarding a terrorist hideout in Fatima Society on Ijtema Gah Road. Police said terrorists opened fire when they spotted them approaching, triggering a gunfight that lasted over an hour. All three suspected terrorists were killed, said police, adding that a fully assembled suicide jacket, three grenades, a Kalashnikov rifle, two pistols and a large cache of ammunition were recovered from the site. Moreover, police found a diary which listed two to three high-value prospective targets. The second deceased suspect was identified as Qudratullah and the third's identity is yet to be confirmed. The CTD chief said the three slain suspected terrorists belonged to TTP cell dispatched from Afghanistan. Intelligence officials had been surveilling the cell for several days, he added. Khattab further added that the TTP cell in question is believed to have five members but only three were present at the safehouse during the raid. A search operation in the area and further investigation are under way.

Russia's night attack on Kyiv leaves eight injured, including child, Ukraine says

KYIV: A Russian overnight air attack on Kyiv wounded eight residents of an apartment building, including a three-year-old child, authorities in the Ukrainian capital said on Monday. Four of those injured in the attack, which took place soon after midnight on Monday, have been hospitalised, with one person in serious condition, the head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on the Telegram messaging app. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that all of the people were residents of a multi-storey apartment building in the city's Darnytskyi district on the left bank of the Dnipro River. 'The blast wave damaged windows from the 6th to the 11th floor,' Klitschko said in a post on Telegram. The capital and most of Ukraine were under air raid alerts for several hours overnight following Ukrainian Air Force warnings of Russian missile and drone attacks. With the threat of missile strikes on western parts of Ukraine that border Poland - a NATO member - Polish armed forces scrambled aircraft to ensure the safety of Polish airspace. The central Ukrainian city of Kropyvnytskyi came under an attack, regional Governor Andriy Raikovych said, adding that emergency services were working on the site and information about potential damage will be released later on Monday. The full scale of the Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. Reuters' witnesses heard loud blasts shaking the city of Kyiv overnight in what sounded like air defence units in operation. There was no comment from Russia on the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes in the war that Russia started in February 2022. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.

China stocks cool after 5-week rally as investors eye US trade talk progress

HONG KONG: China stocks pulled back from a five-week rally on Monday, as investors looked beyond Beijing's efforts to curb competition and overcapacity, instead focussing on U.S. trade talk progress, while Hong Kong stocks rose, driven by insurers' rally. At the midday break, the Shanghai Composite index fell 0.2% to 3,587.69 points after climbing for five straight weeks to a 3-1/2-year high. China's blue-chip CSI300 index shed 0.2%. Commodity-related companies pared last week's rally spurred by Beijing's 'anti-involution' campaign, with indexes tracking steel and coal sectors losing 1.7% and 2.9%, respectively, to weigh on the markets. Beijing launched an 'anti-involution' campaign this month to tackle 'disorderly price competition,' or overcapacity, amid persistent deflationary pressure at home and trade curbs abroad. Insurers added 2.4% to rank among the best performers after the industry body cut the reference rate for life insurance products. Top U.S. and Chinese economic officials will resume talks in Stockholm later in the day, likely extending their trade truce by three months and preventing the implementation of higher tariffs. CITIC Securities says the recent onshore bullish run is mostly liquidity-driven, and whether it can become a longer-lasting bull market will depend on actual improvements in economic fundamentals. Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 0.4% to 25,490.45 and continued to hover near the highest since November 2021. Insurers AIA, Ping An and China Life gained between 3.2% and 4.5%. However, the tech index lost 0.6%.
