"Fort that Chhangur Baba built in India was funded by Pakistan": BJP MP Brij Lal

India Gazettea day ago
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 13 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Brij Lal on Sunday alleged that Chhangur Baba, running a massive religious conversion racket, was funded by Pakistan and other Islamic countries to make India an Islamic country.
Speaking in Lucknow, Lal claimed that the India-Nepal border has been a sensitive area, with madrasas near the border serving as refugee camps.
'The India Nepal border has been a very sensitive area. These madrasas near the border are refugee camps. The fort that Chhangur Baba built in India was funded by Pakistan and other Islamic countries. They have only one goal: to make India an Islamic country,' Lal told ANI.
Chhangur Baba, whose real name is Jalaluddin, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly running a conversion racket that targeted Hindu women, particularly those who are poor, widowed, or socially vulnerable.
Baba's associate Neetu alias Nasreen was also arrested and is currently in ATS custody. The ATS investigation revealed that Baba's network received nearly Rs 500 crore in foreign funding over three years, with Rs 300 crore allegedly funneled through illegal hawala channels via Nepal.
'They cannot win in a war... Our ATS has exposed this so-called Baba and his network... Funding is coming from abroad. Terrorists have been funded for a long time. Chhangur Baba used to sell rings on a bicycle, now owns 400-500 crores... All of this has been exposed in Modi and Yogi's rule, and it will be uprooted...,' added Lal.
A resident of Madpur village in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district, Chhangur Baba, Neetu alias Nasreen, and others are accused of being involved in a large-scale conspiracy involving unlawful religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funding, and activities posing a potential threat to national security and communal harmony. The UP Police's Anti-Terrorism Squad had arrested Chhangur Baba and his aide in Lucknow on July 5.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said that illegal religious conversions are part of a deep-rooted conspiracy against the nation and society, and declared that such acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He highlighted the recent action taken in Balrampur, where a large-scale conversion racket was busted. He said that the state government has exposed a network involved in forced religious conversions, funded by foreign sources.
CM Yogi Adityanath said, 'We have proceeded with a huge investigation in Balrampur. You must have seen he (Jalaluddin alias Chhingur Baba) had fixed rates (for conversion). He was receiving foreign funding. Transactions of more than Rs 100 crores were found in his 40 bank accounts.'
Describing these developments as a threat to both social and financial security, the Chief Minister asserted that converting Scheduled Caste individuals by luring or intimidating them is unconstitutional and violates the spirit of social harmony.
'Such acts aim to break society and harm communal amity,' Yogi said, adding that strict action is being taken against those involved. (ANI)

Punjab's sacrilege Bill: activist on tower protest to climb down only after law enacted, says morcha

Hours after the Punjab government tabled a Bill, providing for enhanced penalties, including life imprisonment and Rs 10 lakh fine for those guilty of sacrilege, the Sarb Dharam Beadbi Rokko Morcha said that its member Gurjeet Singh Khalsa, on protest atop a 400-feet high telecom tower for last over 275 days, would climb down only after the proposed legislation is cleared by the House and gets President's assent. 'Khalsa ji will not come down. We will wait for the Governor to give his assent to the Bill,' said convener of the morcha, Bhai Gurpreet Singh. A source in the government, however, said that despite being a state-specific Bill, it will need Presidential assent before being notified as law. Gurpreet Singh said, 'Though the Bill provides for life imprisonment, it has been diluted. We had given them the draft. It also provided for trial of parents if a juvenile commits the crime of sacrilege. Even the previous government's Bill was about life imprisonment.' The Morcha had handed over a draft to the government. The government took a few days to get legal opinion and then tabled the Bill. 'The government thinks that it will be able to bring Khalsa ji down. He is not coming down,' added Gurpreet Singh. The government has only tabled the Bill. It will come up for debate on Tuesday. After the debate, it would be handed over to the select committee. Chief minister Bhagwant Mann had earlier said that the select committee will take a few weeks to consult various stakeholders before giving a report to the Vidhan Sabha. After that a final draft will be prepared and tabled in Vidhan Sabha once again. 'In that case, the protest will continue,' said Gurpreet Singh. He added, 'Khalsa ji is not alone. Today, at least 15 Sikhs have started fast unto death at the morcha in Samana. They are doing satyagraha for the enactment of the law'. Khalsa had climbed up the tower in October last year. His condition has been deteriorating. The CM had met the representatives of the morcha two weeks ago and promised to bring a law. After that he had announced to summon special session of Vidhan Sabha. How Mann and Capt govt Bills compare The Bill tabled in Vidhan Sabha on Monday and the one tabled by former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's government provide for life imprisonment for sacrilege. However, a government functionary said that Amarinder's Bill was about insertions of Sections in IPC and CrPC while incumbent government has opted for a State Bill. Amarinder government had passed The Indian Penal Code (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2018 and The Code of Criminal Procedure (Punjab Amendment) Bill 2018, which stipulated punishment upto life imprisonment for injury, damage or sacrilege to Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagwat Gita, Holy Quran and Holy Bible with the intention to hurt the religious feelings of the people. The Indian Penal Code (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2018, sought to amend Indian Penal Code (IPC) by inserting Section 295AA. Under the Section 295 A, a convict was subjected to punishment for a maximum of three years imprisonment with or without fine. Amarinder's Bill enhanced it. It also enhanced the punishment under section 295 IPC (Injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) from two to ten years of imprisonment. These Bills were returned by the Centre recently asking the government that these should be in line with BNS and BNSS. AAP government's Bill says that any person who commits an offence under this Act shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than 10 years and which may extend to life imprisonment, and shall also be liable to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh which may extend upto Rs 10 lakh. It also says any person who attempts to commit an offence under this Act shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than three years and which may extend to five years, and shall also be liable to pay a fine which may extend upto Rs 3 lakhs. The offence(s) punishable under this Act shall be cognisable, non-bailable and non-compoundable, triable by a sessions court. The investigation of the offence (s) punishable under this Act shall be conducted by the police officer not below the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Probe in bribery FIR against HDFC Bank CEO transferred to EOW: Mumbai Police to HC

The Mumbai Police Monday informed the Bombay High Court that the investigation in the FIR against HDFC Bank Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan based on a complaint by Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMM Trust) has been transferred to EOW. The HC was further informed that the probe by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) was at a preliminary stage. The police also orally assured the HC that no summons will be issued to Jagdishan until the next hearing. The magistrate court in Bandra on May 29 had directed the Bandra police to register offences punishable under sections 406, 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The magistrate had ordered the probe on the basis of a complaint by trustee Prashant Mehta. Two days later, the Bandra police registered the FIR against Jagdishan and six others who were erstwhile trustees. According to the complaint, after assuming office, Prashant Mehta found a diary showing that between March and June 2022, sums adding up to Rs 2.05 crore were transferred to Jagdishan on the directions of Chetan Mehta, who was a trustee at the time. A division bench of Justices Makarand S Karnik and Nitin R Borkar was hearing a writ plea by Jagdishan seeking quashing of the FIR and setting aside of the May 29 magistrate court's order. Pending hearing of the plea, Jagdishan has sought a stay on the probe against him and urged that there should not be any coercive action, including the filing of chargesheet, against him. Earlier, four judges of the HC had recused themselves from hearing the matter citing various reasons including possession of HDFC Bank shares and prior association with Lilavati Trust or lawyer appearing in the matter among others. Thereafter, the plea was listed before the bench led by Justice Karnik on Monday. Senior advocate Amit Desai for Jagdishan argued that the FIR was a 'retaliatory' move due to recovery proceedings initiated against Splendour Gems Limited (formerly known as Beautiful Diamonds Limited), a company owned by the complainant's father. He added that the same was done using 'facade' of the Trust to seek action against the petitioner and done with 'malafide'. After Desai argued the matter, on the issue of admission and interim relief, the HC sought to know from the government lawyer as to what was the status of the probe. The lawyer argued that the investigation was underway after it being transferred to EOW and same was at a preliminary stage. The lawyer further informed the HC that till now no summons had been issued to Jagdishan and will require some time to apprise court of further course of action. After the HC decided to post the matter for further hearing on July 23, the state lawyer orally assured that no summons will be issued to the petitioner till then.
