Kuala Lumpur: The MADANI Government is always open to receiving views and suggestions from various parties as part of efforts to strengthen the country's online ecosystem. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said concern towards online business conduct is extremely crucial to ensuring the interests of users are always protected. 'It is also to ensure fair and healthy competition in the digital economy,' he posted on Facebook today. Fahmi, who is also the MADANI Government spokesman, said he received a memorandum from Petaling Jaya Member of Parliament (MP) Lee Chean Chung outside Dewan Rakyat here today regarding a proposal for a more integrated mechanism to monitor digital business conduct. Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud has come out in support of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), saying it is unfair to place the blame for the university's water crisis solely on its administration. His comments follow a strongly-worded statement by UMS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur, who recently criticised the Sabah Water Department for claiming that the R13 tank, which supplies water to UMS, had 'never been empty.' Kasim had said such remarks were misleading and insulted the university community. 'I fully support the statement by the UMS Vice-Chancellor. The university has been clear and transparent about the real situation on the ground. It is not fair to simply place the blame on them,' Mustapha said when contacted, Tuesday. He said the R13 tank belongs to the Sabah Water Department and serves not just UMS, but also nearby areas. 'For UMS alone, they require five million litres of water daily. We know there was a pump breakdown, but it was repaired quickly. Still, the water problem has been going on for a long time,' he said. Mustapha urged both UMS and the state water authorities to work more closely together to find a lasting solution. 'I propose that UMS and the Sabah Water Department hold regular meetings to resolve this issue. It won't be solved if we continue with the blaming game,' he said. He added that student feedback and unrest should be treated as a serious indicator of the situation. 'The scale of complaints from students — leading to demonstrations — shows how serious the problem is. If this issue continues, it means we've failed to address it in a rational and effective way,' Mustapha said. His remarks came days after UMS publicly defended its handling of the crisis, with Kasim outlining the challenges of drawing enough water from the state-run R13 tank, especially as the university sits on higher ground. UMS has a daily demand of between 3.5 and 5 million litres and caters to over 23,000 people each day. Despite being located on campus grounds, the R13 tank primarily serves other nearby users, and UMS can only begin pumping when the tank level exceeds 0.5 metres — a threshold that is rarely met. Kasim had also criticised attempts to blame the university's pumping system, saying all three pumps were in working order and had been maintained. AirAsia to develop talents with Sabah institutions

Kota Kinabalu: AirAsia intends to collaborate with Sabah's higher learning institutions to launch training programmes for aspiring pilots, aircraft engineers and aviation technical staff, said its Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. The initiative aims to develop local talent, particularly among B40 youths, as part of the airline's commitment to Sabah's workforce growth. 'While tourism remains Sabah's economic driver, we want to contribute further by nurturing skilled professionals in aviation,' Tony said on Tuesday. Programme details and expansion plans include initial focus on pilot training with applications expected to open by year-end, while future expansion involves aircraft engineering, artificial intelligence (AI) and other technical fields, aligning with AirAsia's tech investments. Additionally, preparations include syllabus, establishment of committee and funding pending for rollout. Hourly update on water levels at UMS' tank

Kota Kinabalu: The State Water Department will now provide an hourly update on water levels at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah's R13 tank, said Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. He said the move aims to help UMS manage its pumping schedule more effectively and ensure better water distribution on campus. 'A new water level indicator has been ordered and should be installed within one or two weeks. I will revisit UMS once that is completed to ensure smooth coordination between both parties,' he told reporters after distributing fresh beef from 30 cows to the needy in Putatan, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, Tuesday. He was responding to UMS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur's strong criticism of the Water Department's May 29 statement, which claimed the university had always received sufficient water and that internal technical issues were to blame for any disruptions. Shahelmey said the department's records showed consistent supply since May 19. However, he explained that from May 14 to 19, one of UMS' pumps was down, possibly affecting water delivery to the campus. 'That issue has since been resolved. This coordination is especially crucial as students are sitting for their exams in June,' the State Works Minister added. Shahelmey explained that discrepancies in reports arose when student leaders accused the department of making false claims.
