Meanwhile, comedian Sathiya, 61, who recently underwent foot surgery due to a bacterial infection, also received assistance. 'I'm doing well. I'm expected to be discharged this evening and hope to return to filming soon,' said Sathiya, famed for his role in Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu.

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 6): The Sabah Film and Visual Association (SAFVA) is calling for the establishment of a Sabah creative agency or department to spearhead the development of a robust, full-fledged creative ecosystem in the state. Its president, Chester Pang, said such a move would not only enable Sabah's creative practitioners to pursue their work professionally and sustainably, but also create a new revenue stream for the state's economy. 'This is a serious effort from SAFVA to build an industry-standard creative ecosystem that allows creative players to work full-time while contributing meaningfully to the state's income,' he told reporters after leading a courtesy call on Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, at Menara Kinabalu recently. He said the proposed agency would allow for the strategic planning and integration of various creative programmes, especially in terms of job creation and intellectual property (IP) protection, through localised policies and legal frameworks — reducing dependence on federal-level decision-making. Chester acknowledged that while such an agency would take time to establish, SAFVA already has a creative framework and action plan in place to accelerate the process. 'We believe in the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and are confident that under his administration, the dream of Sabah's creative community can be realised. This will open doors to a more sustainable and professional local industry.' In the same meeting, Chester also proposed that the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme be expanded into a Sabah Creative Insurance Scheme, providing free insurance protection to creative workers in the state. He said this would mirror a previous initiative by the Ministry of Communications in collaboration with FINAS and PERKESO, which provided a year of free insurance to Malaysia's creative industry players. 'Insurance protection is crucial, as FINAS now requires all production crew and actors to be insured before they are allowed to participate in filming.' Meanwhile, Sabah Creative Industry Action Committee (JATIKS) spokesperson Andrew Ambrose said the committee would continue to monitor the development of the state's creative industry and would not allow external entities to dominate or commercialise Sabah's cultural heritage assets. 'It would be a betrayal to allow our cultural treasures to fall under the control of outsiders,' he stressed. During the meeting, Chester also presented the Sabah Creative Plan, which covers nine strategic categories: Skills Training, Support Funds, Screening Platforms and Cinemas, International Participation and Recognition, Global Market Access, Filming Support and Permits, Equipment and Studio Support, Insurance Assistance and Capital Loan Assistance. Nizam expressed strong interest in the plan and requested a full proposal to be submitted for review and further action. He also assured the delegation that the Sabah government would give serious attention to the concerns and needs of creative practitioners in the state. Communications ministry to assist disabled artistes with welfare aid
KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry is ready to facilitate monthly welfare aid applications for artistes facing permanent disabilities, ensuring long-term support through collaboration with the Social Welfare Department (JKM). Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching emphasised the ministry's commitment to artistes' welfare, noting that while FINAS provides one-off assistance, sustained aid for severe cases can be arranged. Teo stated, 'If there are emergency cases, such as permanent disability requiring monthly assistance, we have no issue helping to liaise with JKM, as that falls under their jurisdiction. FINAS can still consider helping with applications in exceptional cases like this.' She spoke during a visit to two veteran artistes under the Ziarah Seni MADANI FINAS programme. The beneficiaries included comedian Sathia Periasamy, 61, known as Sathiya, who is recovering from foot amputation surgery, and Mohd Shah Rosli, 50, or Dino, a stroke survivor. Both received cash aid and essentials to alleviate their financial burdens. Since 2024, 163 artistes have received welfare aid under the programme, including festive assistance.
