MLS, Saudi showing they are worth the switch
'He said, 'you have to play for a European club at the highest level,'' Beckham revealed in his 2023 documentary, Beckham.
At the time, a big-money move to a club playing in a less competitive league effectively marked the end of a player's international career. It was an option pursued more by players well past their prime, who were looking for a relatively easier stage to play on in the last stage of their career.
But that is not the case today.
A move to the US, or more prominently, the cash-rich Saudi Pro League is far from being the dead end it was once considered.
Consider the two latest high profile players to make the switch from major Premier League clubs to non-European leagues. South Korean Heung-min Son has moved to Major League Soccer's (MLS) Los Angeles FC and former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez of Uruguay will now ply his trade for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. Both players though remain important for their respective national teams and are bound to feature at next year's FIFA World Cup.
And they are far from being the only big-name players in non-European leagues who remain essential figures in international football. Messrs Lionel Messi, who has been playing at Inter Miami in the MLS since 2023, and 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who moved to Al-Nassar in the Saudi Pro League the same year, are vital players for Argentina and Portugal respectively.
'Being a coach isn't about picking or not picking Cristiano Ronaldo, it's about using the best players to have the best team and win titles. It's important to make decisions based on facts, and Cristiano has scored 20 goals (for Portugal) in (the last) 25 games. There are no records like this.' Portugal manager Roberto Martinez was quoted as saying by ESPN.
In June, Ronaldo led Portugal to a second UEFA Nations League title, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner scoring in the final against Spain. In that same Portuguese team though, was 28-year-old Al-Hilal (in the Saudi Pro League) midfielder Ruben Neves, and Ronaldo's new Al-Nassr teammate 25-year-old Joao Felix.
Countries where football leagues were once considered as final chapters now have players in their prime competing in them. In fact, an array of star players have now started to make their way to Saudi.
Champions League and Premier League winner with Liverpool Georginio Wijnaldum is there with Al-Ettifaq. France's left-back at the 2022 World Cup, 27-year-old Theo Hernandez plays for Al-Hilal, two-time Premier League winner with Manchester United Chris Smalling plays for Al-Fayha, Al-Ittihad boasts 2018 World Cup winners Karim Benzema and N'Golo Kante... the list goes on.
And in the US, Inter Miami alone has Messi, Luis Suarez, and Spain's World Cup winners Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
What the influx of big-name players - not all on their last legs - is doing is making these leagues more competitive.
'I believe that at this moment that we are in the top five (leagues) already,' Ronaldo said in a video posted on X by Al-Nassr. 'I still believe that we will continue to improve, and we have time and we have shown in the last two years that the league is going up all the time.'
The Saudi Pro League, in particular, has been the most prominent destination for top-name players because of the high salaries on offer, ever since Ronaldo made the move to Riyadh in 2023, for a reported yearly salary of $250 million.
A spate of big-name transfers to the Gulf followed, and Al-Hilal reportedly offered Paris Saint-Germain a record $332 million for Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman opted not to make the switch. But Saudi Arabia has become a footballing destination that can no longer be ignored.
In Beckham's documentary, Capello talked about his conversation with the former England star. 'I told him that, in my opinion, he needed to return back to reality.'
That was the reality back then. Today, despite players competing in non-European leagues, their careers are still very much alive.

'No question': Ravi Shastri anoints India's next 'regal' force after unprecedented England domination
Shubman Gill enjoyed a prolific outing in the recently concluded Test series against England. The newly-appointed Indian captain silenced his critics with an incredible 754-run series, becoming the second-highest scorer in a Test series for India. While his captaincy had its fair share of shortcomings, which was natural for a first-time captain on a foreign soil, his side fought valiantly throughout the five Tests to draw the series 2-2. Ravi Shastri made his choice for India's next rising star.(AFP) Throughout the five Tests, Gill, who took over Virat Kohli's no.4 role in the batting lineup, smashed four centuries, including a double ton at Edgbaston. The Indian captain gained laurels for his prolific display, and long after the series had ended, appreciation continued for Gill's batting performance. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, under whom Gill made his debut across all formats, labelled the youngster as the next 'rising star' in Indian cricket. 'No question, Shubman Gill. He'll be around for a long, long time because we've seen what kind of series he's had here. I think he's only 25 years of age, and as you know, with this exposure, he'll get even better,' Shastri told Sky Sports Cricket. "He's right up there. He'll be up there. He's composed. He's very regal. The way he bats, he's very easy on the eye, very fluent and has the ability to play the long innings,' he added. Gill's rise to the captaincy came at a time when India's Test titans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bid farewell to the format, leaving a towering void in India's batting order. Tasked with leading a generational shift, the young skipper embraced the challenge head-on in England, executing the opening phase of the transition with striking authority. Gill to return in T20Is? India's next challenge will be at the Asia Cup, which will be played in T20 format as teams prepare for the next year's World Cup in the shortest format, scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka. With a brilliant series in England, Gill's name is among the frontrunners for a return to the T20I squad. However, with the top order firing through Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and skipper Suryakumar Yadav himself, India's balance could face a compelling test should Gill make the trip to the UAE for the continental tournament.

Shoaib Akhtar rips into Pakistan batters, calls for mega changes in culture
Former pacer Shoaib Akhtar has criticised the Pakistan team batters after their heavy defeat in the ODI series decider against West Indies. The loss marked Pakistan's first bilateral series defeat to the West Indies in 34 years, leaving fans and former players frustrated with the side's spiralling performance in world 295 to win the series, Pakistan collapsed like a pack of cards. Three of their top four batters fell for ducks, and the innings folded for just 92 runs. Jayden Seales, the young West Indies fast bowler claimed 6/18, the best-ever bowling figures against Pakistan in ODI history, surpassing Dale Steyn's 6/39 in a team that comprises the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, the performance was shambolic. Azam, once considered as the next big thing in Pakistan cricket hasn't scored an international hundred against a full-member team for nearly three years. Skipper Rizwan has contributed in bits and pieces but once again failed to score runs in a big match. 'We used to have expressive and explosive talent, and we played like that. We were never dependent on one individual, everyone chipped in. No one used to look for escape routes. The environment has changed, and in the last 10–15 years, everyone has started playing for themselves. Everyone is playing for their averages. The intent should be to win matches for your country,' Akhtar said on the Game On Hai CHANGE NEEDED: SHOAIB AKHTARPakistan have been heavily criticised for their outdated brand of cricket for a while now. Since reaching the semi-final and final of T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022, Pakistan cricket have been on a freefall. The team was knocked out of the group stages in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024, owing to their defensive style of India in the 2024 World Cup, the side failed to chase down a paltry total of 120 runs.'We need to change the intent, the mindset, and create that atmosphere. You need to play according to modern cricket. How hard is that to understand?' Akhtar blasted the Pakistan in the T20I series, Pakistan were able to edge out West Indies 2-1, it still does not hide their vulnerability while playing outside home. They toured Bangladesh and lost 1-2 in July. In March-April 2025, they went down against New Zealand 0-3, vindicating the team's obvious vulnerability on foreign soils.'Halka sa seam hota hai toh musibat pad jaati hai (The ball moves a bit and they are in trouble). Rawalpindi pitch lekar nahi ghoom sakte (You can't carry Pindi pitches everywhere),' said upcoming matches will provide the side with a chance to respond to criticism and gain confidence ahead of the bigger challenge - the T20 World Cup in 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. A better and comparatively comprehensive show could ease some pressure on the players, at least for the time being.- EndsMust Watch

Give stray dogs a better life: Kapil Dev pleads to authorities amidst SC row
Former India cricket captain Kapil Dev has urged Delhi and NCR authorities to find compassionate alternatives for managing stray dogs, following a recent Supreme Court order directing their capture and court instructed the Delhi government and municipal bodies to leash stray dogs, place them in pounds, and ensure they are not released back into public spaces. The directive has sparked debate among animal rights advocates, who fear it could lead to overcrowded shelters and inadequate care a video message for animal welfare group Petfamilia, the 1983 World Cup-winning skipper made an emotional plea to safeguard the wellbeing of street dogs.'I know a lot of things are being said about the dogs. But, as a citizen, I feel they are the most beautiful creatures. So I request to authorities to look into them and give them a better life and don't throw them out,' Kapil Dev Dev's advocacy for stray dogs goes back several years. In 2023, he approached the Delhi High Court challenging provisions in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act that allowed 'the destruction of stray dogs in lethal chambers or by such other methods as may be prescribed.' His intervention came after the disturbing killing of a pregnant stray dog in Delhi in November 2022 — an incident that also prompted him to take the matter to the Supreme Kapil Dev, the matter is as much about moral responsibility as it is about policy. His latest message calls for the creation of safe shelters, improved veterinary support, and long-term care strategies that can ensure public safety without compromising the dignity and wellbeing of the authorities now tasked with enforcing the court's orders, and several protesters already voicing their disapproval the challenge will be to balance compliance with compassion.- Ends advertisement
