'Unprecedented' fiscal gap: Iraq's debt exceeds $130B

Shafaq News7 days ago

Shafaq News/ Iraq's public debt has surpassed $130B, as the government faces a widening fiscal deficit and delays in finalizing the 2025 federal budget, a lawmaker cautioned on Thursday.
MP Raed al-Maliki stated that the Ministry of Finance has yet to prepare budget schedules due to the Central Bank's refusal to authorize further borrowing.
'Revenues can't even cover salaries, and the fiscal gap is unprecedented,' al-Maliki noted after a meeting with Finance Minister Taif Sami.
He criticized the government's recent endorsement of the second phase of the 'Beautiful Baghdad' beautification project—estimated at $122M—arguing the funds should instead address contractor arre ars and suspended infrastructure works.
'The government is spending billions on cosmetic ventures while essential infrastructure remains stalled and funded through borrowing,' he remarked.
'This mirrors the 2016 liquidity crisis, and history risks repeating itself.' The lawmaker further accused the administration of confiscating employee benefit allocations, delaying promotions and raises, and liquidating public assets—such as residential properties in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone—to cover operating expenses.'Parliament's silence is enabling poor governance and deepening the burden on Iraq's economy,' al-Maliki concluded. 'The financial crisis is real.'

Iraq fast-tracks Chinese-led gas project to curb energy imports

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Oil has reached an agreement with a Chinese energy firm to accelerate the development of the al-Mansouriya gas field in Diyala province—part of efforts to reduce reliance on imported fuel, a member of Iraq's Parliamentary Finance Committee revealed on Thursday. MP Mudar al-Karawi told Shafaq News Agency that the ministry has signed a revised deal with China's Jereh Group and state-owned PetroIraq to shorten the project timeline from 42 months to just 20 months. 'The first phase will produce 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (Mscfd), gradually increasing to 300 Mscfd,' al-Karawi explained. Located in eastern Iraq near the Iranian border, the al-Mansouriya gas field is expected to play a vital role in fueling domestic power stations and trimming costly natural gas imports. Iraq currently imports gas from Iran to run much of its electricity sector. 'The locally produced gas will help reduce dependence on imported supplies and save Iraq millions of dollars annually,' al-Karawi noted. The development is part of a wider national strategy announced by Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani last October. The minister unveiled multiple gas and oil deals, including complementary licensing rounds, expected to boost production by over 850 Mscfd and 750,000 barrels of oil per day. The original contract for al-Mansouriya was signed on October 31, 2024, under the supervision of the Oil Ministry, targeting a full production capacity of 300 Mscfd. According to data from Global Fire Power, Iraq consumed over 19 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2025, ranking 38th globally. The country's fast-growing energy demands continue to strain its power infrastructure, especially during peak summer months.

Israeli forces injure civilian and breach border in Southern Lebanon

Shafaq News / Tensions flared along the Lebanese-Israeli border on Thursday as an Israeli airstrike wounded a civilian and ground forces crossed into Lebanese territory, escalating already fragile conditions in the region. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health confirmed that a civilian was injured when an Israeli airstrike hit a vehicle in the southern town of Burj Qalaouiyeh, located in the Bint Jbeil district. Meanwhile, Israeli artillery shelled the western outskirts of Al-Wazzani, according to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA), which described the attack as part of 'a continued pattern of cross-border aggression.' In a separate development overnight, an Israeli infantry unit consisting of 20 soldiers crossed the Blue Line—the United Nations-demarcated boundary separating Lebanon from Israel—east of Meiss El-Jabal. The troops, accompanied by a bulldozer, advanced into the Kroum al-Marah area before moving toward Kroum al-Sharaqi, where they reportedly dug trenches and raised earthen barriers inside Lebanese territory. Later the same day, Israeli forces were observed expanding earthworks and excavation activities in Meiss El-Jabal, in what Lebanese authorities described as a clear violation of the Blue Line and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for respect of Lebanon's sovereignty and cessation of hostilities. Meanwhile, the Lebanese Army announced the discovery and dismantling of a camouflaged Israeli surveillance device near the town of Yaron, in the Bint Jbeil district. 'A specialized military unit found a hidden espionage device equipped with a camera,' the army said in a statement. 'It was safely dismantled.' The army urged residents to avoid suspicious objects and report any findings to nearby military posts.
