Google commits $1 billion for AI training at US universities
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Alphabet's Google on Wednesday announced a three-year, $1 billion commitment to provide artificial intelligence training and tools to U.S. higher education institutions and nonprofits.
More than 100 universities have signed on to the initiative so far, includingsome of the nation's largest public university systems such as Texas A&M and the University of North Carolina.
Participating schools may receive cash funding and resources, such as cloud computing credits towards AI training for students as well as research on AI-related topics.
The billion-dollar figure also includes the value of paid AI tools, such as an advanced version of the Gemini chatbot, which Google will give to college students for free.
Google hopes to expand the program to every accredited nonprofit college in the U.S. and is discussing similar plans in other countries, Senior Vice President James Manyika said in an interview.
He declined to specify how much Google is earmarking in direct funds to external institutions relative to footing its own cloud and subscription bills.
The announcement comes as rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic and Amazon have made similar pushes around AI in education as the technology pervades society. Microsoft in July pledged $4 billion to bolster AI in education globally.
By evangelizing their products to students, tech firms further stand to win business deals once those users enter the workforce.
A growing body of research has mapped concerns around AI's role in education, from enabling cheating to eroding critical thinking, prompting some schools to consider bans.
Manyika said Google had not faced resistance from administrators since it began to plot its education initiative earlier this year, but "many more questions" about AI-related concerns remain.
"We're hoping to learn together with these institutions about how best to use these tools," he said, adding that the insights could help shape future product decisions.

To boost engagement and attract more ad dollars, Pinterest has been doubling down on investments in shopping tools and personalization. But that is pushing up costs just as revenue growth is under pressure, hitting profits. The company's quarterly adjusted profit per share of 33 cents fell short of expectations of 35 cents on Thursday as total costs and expenses jumped 15%. The incident occurred on Wednesday in Chongqing, according to media outlets including the Southern Metropolis Daily and Huashang Newspaper. The female passenger was uninjured and was rescued by local residents using a ladder, the reports said. Videos circulating on Chinese social media showed a white vehicle bearing a Baidu Apollo logo at the bottom of what appeared to be a construction trench. A local shop owner told Huashang Newspaper that the construction site had barriers and warning signs, though it remained unclear how the vehicle bypassed these safety measures. Reuters has been able to verify the location of the social media videos, but has no information on how the car got there. Baidu did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment on Friday. The incident sparked widespread discussion on Chinese social media over the safety of robotaxis. Azerbaijan and Armenia to sign peace agreement, White House says

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly told reporters that Trump would sign separate deals with both Armenia and Azerbaijan on energy, technology, economic cooperation, border security, infrastructure and trade. No further details were provided. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan are due to arrive at the White House for talks and the signing ceremony around 2:30 p.m., one of the officials said. The agreement includes exclusive U.S. development rights to a strategic transit corridor through the South Caucasus, dubbed the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity." "What's going to happen here with the Trump route is, this isn't charity. A peace deal could transform the South Caucasus, an energy-producing region neighboring Russia, Europe, Turkey and Iran that is criss-crossed by oil and gas pipelines but riven by closed borders and longstanding ethnic conflicts. Under a carefully negotiated section of the documents the leaders will sign on Friday, Armenia plans to award the United States exclusive special development rights for an extended period on a transit corridor that will be named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, and known by the acronym TRIPP, the officials told Reuters this week.
