One tasty food 'represents home' and family to former NFL player

Fox News13-04-2025
Michael Lehan had never tried peach cobbler until the day he met his biological father.
Today, the former NFL cornerback is the owner of a Peach Cobbler Factory restaurant in Bradenton, Florida.
The inspiration to become an entrepreneur took shape while Lehan was still playing football, but his investment in a Peach Cobbler Factory franchise had everything to do with the memories of his father, who has since passed away.
"My freshman year in college, I had the great opportunity of meeting my biological family," Lehan, who was adopted and spent time in foster care, told Fox News Digital in an interview. (See the video at the top of this article.)
On his first trip to Texarkana, Texas, in 2000, his biological family hosted a cookout with barbecue "and all this variation of food" that Lehan, who grew up in Minnesota, had never experienced, he said.
As he was being bombarded with "so many food options," Lehan stumbled upon a slice of peach cobbler.
"Never in my life had I had it before – and tasted it. 'Yum. Fantastic. What is this?'" Lehan recalled.
"And then I said, 'Who made this?' And it was my father, Melvin, who made it. And he saw my response.
"And so that's really how it culminated into this thing of 'every single time that Michael comes home, we want to make sure that he has peach cobbler.'"
Lehan said his father's "willingness to make peach cobbler as a point of emphasis every single time I came home" stood out through the years.
"That conveyed love, conveyed care," Lehan said.
So many people who are adopted "haven't had the opportunity to meet their biological families, or their biological families didn't want to rekindle that relationship or establish that relationship," Lehan said.
"I'm so incredibly thankful that my biological family wanted to meet me and wanted to have a relationship with me – core memories that stick with me to this day," he said.
Lehan spent six seasons in the NFL from 2003-08 with the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints.
He amassed 141 tackles, one sack, 12 pass deflections, one interception and one defensive touchdown.
While he was in Cleveland, Lehan had a locker near Robert Griffith.
He remembers the financial advice that the Pro Bowl safety shared with him, encouraging him to invest in his 401k.
Lehan said he was fortunate to have so many "future-focused" colleagues around him in the locker room — which motivated him to prepare for life after football.
When the opportunity came to partner with the Peach Cobbler Factory, which opened its first location in 2013, and run a franchise, Lehan didn't hesitate.

Lehan's Bradenton restaurant had its grand opening in January.
"It really started [with] this concept of 'peach cobbler represents home.'"
"It really started [with] this concept of 'peach cobbler represents home,'" Lehan said.
"It represents me meeting my biological family, the love and care that emerged through that relationship. And ultimately, that's what I want to extend to each of the customers [who] come into the Peach Cobbler Factory."
There's no better way to do that, Lehan said, than through peach cobbler.
"Maybe a cinnamon roll while we scoop out the middle of the cinnamon roll and put some peach cobbler in the middle," Lehan said.
"Maybe it's a brownie. Maybe it's banana pudding. Maybe it's churros. Maybe it's just a scoop of ice cream with some different toppings. We have all of those things."

Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick Documentary Gets More Bad News

Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick Documentary Gets More Bad News originally appeared on The Spun. Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick documentary has received more bad news. The acclaimed American film director made a multi-part docuseries on the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback. Kaepernick, who starred at the University of Nevada, played for the 49ers from 2011-16. The former second round NFL Draft pick led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2013, but he was out of the league by 2017. Kaepernick started kneeling for the national anthem as a form of protest against police brutality in 2016. Lee's docuseries on Kaepernick was set to air on ESPN, however, the network decided to not go through with it. Reuters reported on August 18 that ESPN wouldn't air it. Now, more bad news has hit the docuseries. Lee announced this week that the project will not find a new home. The director of movies like "He Got Game" and "Inside Man" told Business Insider that he has no plans to sell the project to another partner. He's officially moved on. 'No, it's unfortunate, but I mean, I've moved on,' he said. ESPN and Lee cited "creative differences" Lee hasn't been able to say much about the project, revealing that he signed an NDA - non-disclosure agreement. 'It's not coming out. That's all I can say,' he told Reuters. ESPN, meanwhile, admitted that the project would not be airing. The Worldwide Leader in Sports admitted that there were "creative differences" on the project. 'ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences,' ESPN said in a statement released to the media. 'Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film.' Lee is also a very busy man right now, as his new film, "Highest 2 Lowest," just hit theaters. Lee has also expressed interest in doing a movie with Timothee Chalamet, a fellow New Yorker and Knicks fan. He appears to have other priorities than Colin Kaepernick right now. Kaepernick reportedly had issues with the docuseries, too Kaepernick, who threw for 12,271 yards, 72 touchdowns and 30 interceptions during his six-year NFL career, reportedly wanted the project to be about his experiences. Kaepernick signed a deal with Disney that gave the company the rights to a docuseries back in 2020. Lee was brought on as a director in 2022, but Kaepernick had "approval rights." Puck's Matt Belloni reported last September that Kaepernick and Lee had some disagreements. 'Kaepernick, who is a producer on the project and maintains approval rights, is said to have wanted the film to be more limited to his experience,' Belloni wrote. 'He also asked that certain things be added after Lee finished his final cut. Kaepernick and his longtime partner are apparently hyper-meticulous about how he is portrayed in the media.' The timeline of how this all transpired: In 2020, Kaepernick signed an exclusive deal with Disney, granting the company rights to a docuseries about his life In 2022, ESPN brought on Spike Lee to direct the project In September of 2024, Puck reported that Kaepernick and Lee had disagreements on the project In August of 2025, the project was officially cancelled by ESPN. Days later, Lee announced that it wouldn't air anywhere else. There's the NFL factor, as well While it's common for ESPN - or any media company, for that matter - to cancel projects, you can't ignore the network's current relationship with ESPN. On August 5, ESPN acquired the NFL Network and other NFL media assets, including the linear rights to the league's popular RedZone channel. As part of the deal, the NFL took a stake in ESPN. Given Kaepernick's criticism of the NFL - he's accused the league's owners of blackballing him - many are fairly speculating if the league's relationship with ESPN had an impact on the docuseries. Yeah, I think that, um, You know, a lot of people don't know this, but you know my dad is my, uh, He's my right-hand man and he didn't, uh, He didn't have running water until he was in high school, so, there's definitely a lot of things that, and people that I could, uh, that I think I could certainly help, uh, with this gift I've been blessed with, but, yeah, just little things like that, like, you know, I don't really know anybody back at home with any money, so, um. Yeah, it feels good. I mean, it's certainly a weight, uh, weight off my shoulders and my family's shoulders, and Yeah, it definitely means a lot. Ah. So cool. For those who don't know Tyson Beijent's story, I know you do, Charles. Like this guy played Division 2 Shepherd in West Virginia, Division 2 Shepherd. He somehow got invited to the Senior Bowl because they believed in him. He went down there, looked pretty good, and his dad put on a show there as well. Travis Beijent, who's this world champion arm wrestler, like he is Stallone. From over the top with like WWE Mike skills. He's a showman. He, he almost kicked Tom Palasero's rear on the sideline during the Senior Bowl practices, and that was me cackling in the background. This is such a cool story. I got 25 seconds left. Such a cool story to see this guy get his paycheck. Yeah, I gotta shout out my boy Dylan Bishop. He does, uh, a radio for Shepherd football. He's been telling us about this guy for years and to see this story come full circle, uh, it's really cool to see, and these are one of those moments where it's something you might not think about, but it's something that clearly means so much to someone else and it always gives you a little bit of perspective. These are real human beings and they're making major accomplishments in their life and it's really cool to see that.
