Spurs facing ‘dressing room revolt over Ange Postecoglou sacking

Whoever replaces Ange Postecoglou could walk into a dressing room revolt at Tottenham, according to reports.
The Aussie was axed just over two weeks after lifting the Europa League to end the club's 17-year trophy drought.
Brentford's Thomas Frank is the leading candidate to take over, with Fulham boss Marco Silva and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola also tipped to be in the running.
And the new man's first job could be to lift spirits in a devastated dressing room full of players that have spoken out in support of Postecoglou, The Sun reports.
The Telegraph claims the sacking has angered many and some stars now want to leave this northern summer.
A 'player revolt' is a worry for chief Daniel Levy as players are unhappy over the way 'Postecoglou's exit has been handled'.
The Spurs squad penned touching goodbyes to their boss on social media, possibly hinting at their dismay over the decision.
Captain Son Heung-Min called him a 'legend', who 'changed the trajectory of the club and believed in us'.
'You knew what we were capable of all along,' Son wrote on Instagram.
'You did it your way. And your way brought this club the best night it's had in decades. We will have those memories for life.
'You trusted me with the captaincy. One of the highest honours of my career.
'It's been an incredible privilege to learn from your leadership up close. I am a better player and a better person because of you.
'Ange Postecoglou, you are a Tottenham Hotspur legend forever. Thank you, mate.'
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario wrote: 'You are not only a top manager, you are an incredible person to work for, a real leader, a mentor and someone I'll always look up to.
'What we achieved TOGETHER will stay in the history books.'
Pedro Porro said: 'For mentoring me early on, helping me settle into the club, and trusting me out on the pitch.
'I'll always be grateful for the way you led us, defended us, and kept us going through all the highs and lows.
'Above everything, you gave us one of the greatest moments in the club's history and for that, you'll always be celebrated.'
Striker Dominic Solanke added: 'Thank you for bringing me to this wonderful club, thank you for bringing us a wonderful trophy.
'Won't ever forget the convo we had before I signed and we achieved a dream! All the best in your next adventure.'
An official Spurs statement said it was a unanimous choice to get rid of Postecoglou despite it being a 'tough' decision.
They said: 'Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.'
Yet it did little to calm raging fans, who said: 'What an absolute joke of a football club.'
Another commented: 'This club is addicted to self-sabotage. Embarrassing. Thanks Ange, for reminding us what it's like to actually win something.'
The last word can go to England legend Alan Shearer, who replied to Spurs' tweet confirming the sacking: 'What a stupid game football is!!!!'

Aussie heavyweight Justis Huni KO'd in ‘heartbreaking' boxing loss

Australian heavyweight boxer Justis Huni has suffered the first loss of his professional career, getting knocked out when he was on track for victory on Sunday morning. Fighting Fabio Wardley in Ipswich in the UK, Huni was in control of the fight and ahead on the scorecards — on track for a 12th career win. But as the intensity lifted in the 10th round of the 12-round bout, Wardley landed a monster punch on Huni, sending the Australian falling backwards and down onto the canvas. It was a perfectly timed right hand that caught Huni flush on the chin. 'That is unbelievable,' the commentator exclaimed. 'Fabio Wardley, losing virtually every single round — oh my word.' Watch the Justis Huni KO in the video above The punch seriously hurt Huni and the referee stopped the fight after a somewhat brisk eight-count as Huni slowly got to his feet. Main Event commentator Ben Damon said on X: 'Heartbreak for Huni! Australia's Justis Huni was in complete control against Fabio Wardley when this happened.' OMG!!!!!! But it was a heartbreaking loss for Huni, who now has a 12-1 record and will need to bounce back to keep his dream alive of being one the best heavyweight fighters in the world. Rubbing salt into the wound, Huni was ahead 89-82 89-82 88-83 on the judges' scorecards at the time of the stoppage. 'That's my curse,' Huni said after the loss. 'I even said, it only takes one split second to switch off and it happened tonight. 'Credit to Fabio and his team. He's a real champion. 'He's just an awesome fighter. He never gave up and he got the win. He deserved it.' 'Justis Huni's a great operator,' Wardley said. 'I should've performed better in some of those rounds. Sometimes that's the way it goes. We pulled one out of the bag. 'He's a great boxer. Great skills and he showed me everything he has tonight. He pulled out all sorts of tricks. I didn't expect to bank rounds like that with Justis.'

Ange Postecoglou praised by Spurs captain Son Heung-min following sacking

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has penned an emotional tribute to Ange Postecoglou following the Australian's sacking as the club's manager. Spurs axed Postecoglou on Saturday morning AEST, just over two weeks after he guided his side to a 1-0 win against Manchester United in the Europa League final. The win in Bilbao last month ended a 17-year trophy drought for Spurs. The Australian was "relieved of his duties", with Spurs citing the club's poor results in the Premier League as the key reason behind the decision. They finished 17th out of 20 teams. Writing on Instagram, Son said Postecoglou deserved to be remembered as a Spurs great. "You've [Postecoglou] changed the trajectory of this club," Son wrote. "You believed in yourself, and us, since day one and never wavered for a second. Even when others did. "You knew what we were capable of all along. You did it your way. And your way brought this club the best night it's had in decades. We will have those memories for life. "You trusted me with the captaincy. One of the highest honours of my career. It's been an incredible privilege to learn from your leadership up close, I am a better player and a better person because of you. "Ange Postecoglou, you are a Tottenham Hotspur legend forever. Thank you, mate." England international James Maddison also praised Postecoglou for the contribution he made to Spurs. Maddison thanked the former Socceroos head coach for helping shape his career. "Your unwavering self-belief and strong mindset is infectious and a massive reason in why you were the man to end this club's 17-year drought for a trophy," Maddison wrote on Instagram. "A family man with great morals and I have honestly learnt so much from you. More than you will probably ever know. All the very best." In its statement announcing Postecoglou's departure, Spurs said the club could not base the "decision on emotions aligned" to the Europa League triumph. "It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond," the statement read. "This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. "We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision." Spurs said a decision on who would replace Postecoglou as manager would be "announced in due course".

Theory emerges over timing of Tottenham's Ange Postecoglou sacking

Ange Postecoglou was sacked 16 days after winning the Europa League — and now a theory has emerged as to why Spurs waited til then. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy axed the boss early on Saturday (AEST), just over two weeks after that glorious night in Bilbao. Victory over Manchester United in Spain ended the club's 17-year wait for a trophy, but it wasn't enough to save him after Tottenham's worst ever Premier League season. But after leaving Postecoglou in the dark over his future, Spurs finally announced he was relieved of his duties on Friday afternoon. It marked exactly two years to the day from when the Australian landed the job in North London, signing a four-year deal at the time. The Sun reports BBC senior football reporters Ian Dennis and Sami Mokbel discussed the sacking on the Football Daily Podcast. Both were adamant that the move to get rid of Postecoglou was made before the final. They said league form was seen as the 'true barometer' and Europa League success was just a 'bump in the road' to their ultimate decision. Dennis shared a theory that explained the over two-week wait for the confirmation of Postecoglou's sacking. He tweeted: 'Interesting his departure was timed after he had completed two years and on the first day of his third year. Significant in any settlement?' Postecoglou has reportedly pocketed £4 million (A$8.3) million) after being shown the exit door by Levy. He already collected a £2 million (A$4.1 million) bonus for getting the club into the Champions League by winning the Europa League — giving Postecoglou a total payout of around A$12.4 million. On Postecoglou's departure, Dennis said: 'It was such an inevitability that it was going to happen. 'They got off to an absolutely flying start when he first arrived and it's funny how perceptions can change through results. 'If they had started slowly and finished well, you would not be referring to the 78 points from the last 66 games. 'It seems there has not been an improvement in their league form.' Brentford's Thomas Frank is the leading candidate to take over and he has a £10m (A20m) release clause in his contract. Fulham's Marco Silva and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola remain in contention for the vacant Tottenham job. Where will Ange Postecoglou coach next? Attention will quickly turn to which club Postecoglou will coach next, and while there are no shortage of options, his next move is unclear. Postecoglou is bound to land on his feet one way or another with a new coaching job but it remains to be seen where that will be, but he will likely wish to remain in Europe and prove his critics wrong in the Premier League at another club. Timing could be an issue for Postecoglou, with Socceroos great Robbie Slater telling Code Sports it might be tough for the 59-year-old to secure a new job before the new season starts in August. 'He put himself in that top echelon by being at a big club and winning a big trophy,' Slater said. 'The way he plays football, I don't think a lower club in the Premier League will look at him and go we can take that risk. 'And 22 Premier League games lost, I can't see one of the big ones again, at least not just yet. 'He might get that opportunity in Europe, maybe Spain or France. I don't know. 'He's gonna get a job. I can't see him not. He will be in demand. 'I think he's done well enough at Celtic to show League success and by lifting this trophy he will stay in one of the top five leagues which is in Italy, France, Germany, Spain or England. 'He won't have a job to start next season but as we know in football it won't take long.' Football expert Daniel Garb told the ABC: 'I think he holds his reputation from when he came to Spurs from Celtic, and to be honest, considering he's been relieved of his duties, that's not necessarily a bad situation to be in.' The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare wrote on X: 'An element of this I've found really interesting throughout is what's Ange's next job? He's such a hard manager to place in the footballing ecosystem 'Can sort of imagine a historic club like Ajax where he talks in his first presser about watching Cruyff as a kid with his old man.' Champions League runners-up Inter Milan are looking for a manager after Simone Inzaghi moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. But top European clubs would be eager to assess Postecoglou further before appointing him as coach, he could coach a club in Turkey or Greece to further enhance his coaching CV. Another option is becoming coach of a national team ahead of next year's FIFA World Cup, where 48 teams will compete in an expanded competition. Tony Popovic is leading the Socceroos to a sixth consecutive World Cup, while ex-Socceroos boss Graham Arnold is now the coach of Iraq.
