Man arrested for loan app scam; nat'l racket exposed
Pune: A 29-year-old Vashi resident has been arrested by Pimpri Chinchwad police in connection with cheating and blackmailing people via fake loan apps, which he allegedly executed on instructions of handlers based in Singapore. The arrest throws open a pan-India loan fraud scam. Accused Isaki Thevar, a loan recovery agent, has been duping people through at least eight fake loan apps, police officers told TOI, adding that at least 10,000 complaints have been registered against the apps across the country. Investigations revealed that the suspects used Pakistani cellphone numbers to cheat several people. A Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police team led by senior inspector Ravikiran Nale arrested Thevar last week from Mumbai. Five laptops, seven SIM cards, and a mobile handset have been recovered from him. Assistant police inspector Pravin Swami of cyber police said, "Thevar helped handlers obtain permissions to operate these apps by uploading fake documents, like forged approvals from RBI." School trustee files plaint against former employee
Ahmedabad: A trustee of an educational institution in Maninagar on Saturday filed an FIR against a sacked employee for allegedly threatening them, abusing them and spreading rumours. A trustee and secretary of the trust since 2019, stated in the FIR that the female employee was dismissed from service on May 2, 2023, after a departmental inquiry. "She was terminated as per rules. After that, she barges into the school premises, uses foul language, and issues threats." On July 6, she allegedly sent a WhatsApp message to another trustee stating that she had been appointed as a donor to the trust by another trustee and would be legally coming to school to perform her duty. She also forwarded this message to the complainant. In the message, she is alleged to have mentioned that the complainant may try to stop her, but will face consequences. She allegedly threatened to send cops to the homes of the complainant and other trustees at night. Restaurant owner scammed out of 1.42cr
Ahmedabad: A restaurant owner from Memnagar area has been allegedly defrauded of Rs 1.42 crore in a large-scale cyber fraud. According to the police complaint filed with cybercrime police on Sunday, he was scammed between Dec 2024 and June this year using a fake profile on a matrimony app and a fraudulent trading platform. Case details state that in July 2024, the businessman downloaded a popular matrimony app and came across a profile of a member named Gurleen Agarwal, who claimed to be a fashion designer and jewellery trader from Delhi NCR. The two began chatting on WhatsApp with their virtual friendship leading to talks of marriage. Agarwal allegedly persuaded the complainant to invest in USDT through an online trading platform. She shared a registration link and collected his Aadhaar and email ID to help him sign up. The complainant told police that he transferred Rs 35,000 to a bank account and began trading on the platform. The accused also allegedly convinced him to pay so-called 'profit taxes' to be able to withdraw his money. When withdrawals began showing as pending and more tax demands followed, the complainant suspected fraud. He then received a threatening call from a man claiming to be Agarwal's father, demanding further payment and alleging that she locked herself in a room and was in danger. The complainant reported the matter to the national cybercrime helpline on June 24 and later filed a complaint. Investigations revealed that the photos used in the fake profile actually belonged to a woman named Reena Sharma, indicating identity theft and intentional deception. The total amount lost through bank transfers, UPI payments, and deposits amounted to Rs 1.42 crore. Cybercrime police registered a complaint of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and breach of trust under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with charges of the Information Technology Act.
