Malegaon blasts: After acquittal, Prasad Purohit welcomed with flower petals, ‘Jai Shri Ram' chants
At the Shantisheela Housing Society on the city's Law College Road, Purohit was welcomed with a procession, in which traditional drums were beaten and flower petals were showered on him, PTI reported. Bharatiya Janata Party member and Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni was among those who attended the event.
Those who participated in the procession shouted 'Jai Shree Ram' and 'Sanatan Dharm Ki Jai' to celebrate Purohit's acquittal.
Purohit was on bail in the case since August 2017 after having spent nearly nine years in jail. He has been posted at an Army formation in Mumbai since he got bail, according to The Indian Express. He visited his Pune home for the first time on Sunday after his acquittal on July 31.

Apart from Purohit, the others who were acquitted in the case were Pragya Singh Thakur, Major Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi and Sudhakar Chaturvedi. Thakur went on to become a BJP MP from Bhopal between 2019 and 2024.
Six persons were killed and around 100 were injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon in northern Maharashtra on September 29, 2008.
At the event on Sunday, Purohit said that not even an enemy could question his 'loyalty towards the nation', the Hindustan Times reported.
'During my submission [in court], I insisted that I be called anything but not aatankwadi [terrorist] or deshdrohi [traitor],' he said.
Charges unproven but not baseless: NIA court
The special National Investigation Agency court that acquitted the persons accused in the Malegaon blast case on July 31 remarked in its verdict that although the prosecution could not prove its charges against Purohit, it could not be said that the allegations against him were ' baseless or without foundation ', Live Law reported.
The court rejected his argument that the prosecution should have sought prior sanction under Section 197 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Special Judge AK Lahoti did not accept the contention that he had been collecting information from Hindutva organisations like Abhinav Bharat as part of his official duty.
The court said that Purohit was one of the founding members of Abhinav Bharat and was an active member of it, Live Law reported.
There was no evidence to show that Purohit's superior authority had given him permission to join the Abhinav Bharat trust or to collect funds for it, the court said.
'As per the ethos of the military intelligence, the commanding officer or Discipline & Vigilance Branch used to protect the interest of officers and sources,' the judge noted, according to Live Law. 'But after the arrest of Purohit, no any steps were taken to protect their officer. If he would have really discharged the duty under the colour of his office, there would have been protection to him.'
The court said that Purohit had only been allowed to 'mix up' with certain organisations to collect information about them, but there was no evidence to show that he had been allowed to join any group.
The lieutenant colonel had claimed that he was falsely implicated in the case, and that he had been working as an intelligence officer seeking to monitor extremist groups.

Believers could be brought in to fight Hindutva ideology, says Govindan
Religious believers and all secular, progressive-minded people should be rallied against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-Bharatiya Janata Party (RSS-BJP) combine's bid to bring in a 'neo-fascist rule' in the country, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan has said. He was opening a seminar on 'Theocratic state: In India and abroad', organised by the Keluettan Centre for Study and Research, Kozhikode, on Saturday (August 9). Mr. Govindan claimed that the country had not yet gone into a 'completely militaristic and fascist rule'. 'We are under a partially militaristic administration. The Union government has taken control of all independent constitutional institutions such as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, the Enforcement Directorate, and the Central Bureau of Investigation. Even a section of the judiciary has been compromised. Now, Bharatiya Janata Party spokespersons are being nominated as judges,' he said. Mr. Govindan claimed that if the country moved towards a fully 'militaristic administration', it would pave the way for 'neo-fascism'. The CPI(M) leader also highlighted that apart from the RSS-BJP combine that functions under the Hindutva theocratic ideology, there were organisations such as the Jamaat-e-Islami and Church Auxiliary for Social Action, which too were divisive forces. 'These communal organisations represent various theocratic ideologies. However, if they fight with each other, that will not end up in one side winning. Dharmasthala ‘mass burials': SC refuses to impose gag order on media reports
The Supreme Court on Friday declined to restrain the media from publishing reports or commentary related to allegations of mass graves, disappearances and crimes against women and students over the past two decades in the temple town of Dharmasthala, reported Live Law. A bench of Justices Rajesh Bindal and Manmohan directed a trial court to decide afresh on a plea seeking to gag such reporting, filed by Harshendra Kumar D, secretary of the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Education Society and brother of Bharatiya Janata Party MP D Veerendra Heggade, according to Bar and Bench. The Heggade family manages the Dharmasthala Manjunathaswamy Temple and the institutions affiliated with it. Harshendra Kumar D had challenged the Karnataka High Court order from August 3, which set aside a gag order issued by a Bengaluru civil court on media outlets, YouTube channels and individuals. On Friday, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the petitioner, alleged that the media was running a 'defamatory campaign' while the investigation in the case was pending. He also showed the bench allegedly defamatory social media posts. The bench said that while the temple management can claim damages for posts deemed defamatory, 'gag orders are only passed in the rarest of rare cases'. 'For example the journalist gets to know that police officer has number of a terrorist,' Bar and Bench quoted Manmohan as saying. 'Then they cannot publish. But gag orders are super injunctions. They stifle free speech.' He added: 'Let it be argued before the trial court. There is no documentary evidence. We live in a free country.' In July, a first information report was registered in Dharamasthala based on a complaint by a sanitary worker, who alleged that he was forced to bury the bodies of several women bearing signs of sexual assault. On July 19, the Karnataka government announced the to probe the case. Home Minister G Parameshwara had on August 1 reviewed the investigation and said the state was also monitoring social media posts about the case that could 'wrongly impact society'.
