Gary Neville warns Ruben Amorim he must fix 'GLARING issue' at Man United - as pundit names two 'big personalities' the Red Devils must target

Daily Mail8 hours ago
Gary Neville has urged Manchester United to sign a new goalkeeper after Altay Bayidnir's error against Arsenal.
The Turkish shot stopper started in Andre Onana 's absence as United slipped to defeat in their opening match of the season against Mikel Arteta 's side, with Ricardo Calafiori heading home the decisive goal.
Calafiori was able to nod in after Bayindir managed to punch the ball but failed to command his area and clear convincingly.
And United legend Neville insists the goalkeeping department is a major concert that must be addressed before the summer transfer window closes.
He said on Sky Sports: 'There is a glaring issue for United that cannot be ignored and that is they need to find a new goalkeeper. 'They have to, I am absolutely unequivocal on that.
'I have experience at United for 20 years where there were two big periods of seven or eight years with Schmeichel and Van der Sar, and in between we had seven or eight goalkeepers in a seven or eight year period.
'It is really unsettling when you don't have a dominant No 1 who owns his six-yard box, who comes and punches everything and makes saves to save you points when your defenders make mistakes.'
Neville says there two goalkeepers that United should target to solve their issues in the position.
He added: 'The two you look at that have been mentioned in the last few weeks are (Gianluigi) Donnarumma and (Emiliano) Martinez.
'The reason I say those two would be good goalkeepers for Man United is not necessarily because I think they are the best goalkeepers in Europe or that they are amazing.
'I think they have got big personalities and characters. You have seen Donnarumma in a European final for Italy save those penalties and look like a giant, you have seen him play for PSG in huge games under pressure.
'Martinez has won a World Cup, they have played under extreme pressure and have big personalities and characters, the arrogance of a goalkeeper.
'They need to sort the goalkeeper out as they will continue to concede goals and points and it undermines what they are doing.'
Bayindir joined the club from Fenerbahce in September 2023 but has been criticised for several high-profile errors, particularly when conceding from set-pieces.
Meanwhile, Onana, who United were open to allowing to leave this summer, took part in training during pre-season but was not deemed sharp enough to start against Arsenal.
United are believed to have kept tabs on Donnarumma and Antwerp stopper Senne Lammens but have not yet moved for either with Onana still at the club.
Ruben Amorim revealed pre-match that Onana had not made the squad because of the performances of United's other goalkeepers during pre-season.
'No, he recovered,' Amorim told MUTV when asked if Onana was still injured.
'But the other guys did so well during pre-season, so I need to balance that.'

Campbell didn't speak to me for six months

Wayne Rooney says his former England team-mate Sol Campbell went six months without speaking to him after a penalty incident between the pair in Manchester United's 2-0 win against Arsenal during the 2004-05 coached by Arsene Wenger, had been Premier League Invincibles the previous season, but Sir Alex Ferguson's United snapped their 49-game unbeaten league streak in an ill-tempered victory at Old Trafford. Ruud van Nistelrooy gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot, after Rooney went down inside the box under the challenge of Arsenal centre-back Campbell. Rooney, who had joined United from Everton earlier that summer, then sealed the victory in the 93rd minute - on his 19th birthday. After the game, a slice of pizza was thrown at Ferguson by then 17-year-old Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas - a chaotic moment that would go on to be dubbed as the 'Pizzagate'."It was a big game for Arsenal. If they had won it, it was 50 games unbeaten for them," said Rooney, speaking on his new BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show."We beat them 2-0 and Campbell did not speak to me for over six months. "We met up [during international duty] and Sol won't speak to me. Sometimes, I was with Sol and I'd say to him: 'Come on man, we are playing for England here'."But he wouldn't speak to me because he felt I dived. He left his leg out and I think there was a small contact." Matches between Arsenal and Manchester United contained seven red cards between February 1997 and February 2005 as the two sides battled regularly for major 2003-04, Van Nistelrooy was accused by the Arsenal players of overreacting and getting Gunners skipper Patrick Vieira dismissed for a second the Dutch striker then went on to miss an injury-time penalty in the game that was billed 'Battle of Old Trafford', it sparked unsavoury reactions from his opponents - in particular Martin Keown. The following season Roy Keane and Vieira clashed in the tunnel at Arsenal's former stadium Highbury, with referee Graham Poll having to separate the Arsenal's 1-0 win at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener on Sunday, Rooney said: "When I joined United, it was the big rivalry we had. I used to love playing against them, but it has died down a little bit now. "I remember my first game at Highbury for United was the one with Roy and Vieira in the tunnel. You can feel the game was on a knife-edge and even the referees got it."We had the Fabregas one with Ferguson in the tunnel - with him throwing a pizza at [Ferguson]. There were fights in the tunnel where everyone was involved."

Monday's briefing: Arsenal edge first win after Chelsea strikeforce fires blanks

Arsenal took the honours in the first big clash of the Premier League season, battling to a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. There were signs of hope for Ruben Amorim's side despite the result, while elsewhere Nottingham Forest made a fine start to the season and Chelsea played out a stalemate with Crystal Palace. Advertisement Rearguard action from Gunners Riccardo Calafiori scores from close range (Nick Potts/PA) Altay Bayindir's blunder handed Arsenal victory and undid a positive Manchester United performance in Sunday's pulsating Premier League encounter. Old Trafford rocked as Mikel Arteta's runners-up headed to the rebuilding Red Devils in the most eye-catching fixture of the opening weekend. United looked far better than the side that finished 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign since 1974 – yet Amorim's men fell to another loss as Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on Bayindir's early flap. United are a work in progress but summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looked sharp on their debuts, while Patrick Dorgu hit a post in the first half. Advertisement Arsenal keeper David Raya also produced a string of important stops to keep the hosts at bay. Amorim defends keeper Altay Bayindir had a difficult day (Martin Rickett/PA) Bayindir's difficult moment again put the spotlight on United's goalkeeping situation. The Turk was given the nod to start the game with Andre Onana still working his way back from injury. Bayindir failed to deal with a corner, allowing Calafiori to nod in, but Amorim, felt his keeper was put in a very difficult situation. Advertisement 'You're allowed to do a lot of things in the corner, we need to do the same,' he said. 'When you touch that way the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players, or he chooses to push players and let the ball past.' Last season Bayindir conceded directly from a Son Heung-min corner in a 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham, but Amorim rejected criticism of the keeper, saying: 'He suffered a goal like this where? Against Tottenham? It was without VAR. With VAR it was a foul. 'Then in the next game against Arsenal, who saved the penalty? Who saved the game? You don't remember the game but I remember the game and Altay was unbelievable in that game. I am happy with the three goalkeepers.' Spotlight on Eze Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants Alexander Isak's future resolved quickly (Bradley Collyer/PA) Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner said Eberechi Eze will play for as long as he remains at the club and urged fans not to believe 'rumours' the England international is about to be sold. Advertisement Amid reports of an imminent move, Eze was a surprise inclusion as Palace began their Premier League campaign with a goalless draw against a lacklustre Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He looked to have delivered a potential parting gift to supporters with a brilliant first-half free-kick before VAR intervened controversially to disallow the goal. Palace have had talks with Tottenham over Eze and Arsenal are also reported to be keen to sign the midfielder. 'As much as I know, Eze has a contract with Crystal Palace, he's a Crystal Palace player and he showed it today,' said Glasner. Advertisement 'As long as he is a Palace player and performs like this, he will play for us. Nobody has told me something else.' Wood at the double Chris Wood, left, gets past Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher (Bradley Collyer/PA) Nottingham Forest made a mockery of Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries as they beat Brentford 3-1 in their opening game of the season. Nuno expressed his 'concern' for the campaign ahead of the match, citing a lack of options in his squad, but he will feel better after a rampant display at the City Ground. After new signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off, their new team-mates put on a show as Chris Wood's double and a debut goal for Dan Ndoye put them 3-0 up at the break. It was the start that new Brentford boss Keith Andrews would have dreaded. With Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard sold over the summer and Yoane Wissa effectively on strike trying to force a move away, Andrews has not been handed the easiest of tasks in his first managerial role. Igor Thiago got the Bees on the scoresheet with a second-half penalty, but life after Thomas Frank began poorly. Ramsey moves north Jacob Ramsey is a Mag! 🙌 — Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 17, 2025 Newcastle completed the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey. The 24-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the Magpies, who are understood to have paid an initial £39million for his services, with a further £4m due in add-ons. The Villa academy graduate, who made 167 appearances for the club, 10 of them in last season's Champions League, is head coach Eddie Howe's fourth acquisition of a difficult summer. Ramsey said: 'I'm delighted to be here. It's been a mad two or three days, but I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started.' 'Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad,' added Toon boss Eddie How. 'His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt.' What's on today? Dominic Calvert-Lewin could face his former club (Peter Byrne/PA) Leeds mark their return to the Premier League on Monday night when they host Everton in the final match of the opening round. Daniel Farke's side will hope to use the Elland Road crowd to make it a difficult night for Everton, who could have new loan signing Jack Grealish in the squad. Facing the Toffees, meanwhile, could be forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who spent nine years on Merseyside before departing at the end of his contract earlier this summer.
