Alexander Isak told to report for Newcastle training after squad have gone
The 25-year-old Sweden international did not travel with his team-mates on their pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea, ostensibly because of a minor thigh injury, after Liverpool, who subsequently tabled a £110million bid for him, let it be known they remained interested in acquiring his services.
Isak, who later informed the club he wanted to explore his options this summer, instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad and returned to Tyneside at the weekend, shortly before head coach Eddie Howe and his squad landed back from Seoul and were given two days off.
The players were back at the training ground on Wednesday morning and their families were invited to join them after training.
However, the PA news agency understands Isak, who reported back to the club's Benton base on Monday, was told not to come in until after they had left and was pictured arriving at around 1550.
The £63million frontman has been a huge hit since his arrival from Sociedad during the summer of 2022 and played a key role last season as they ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons.
However questioned about his absence in South Korea, Howe signalled that his actions might have repercussions.
The 47-year-old told reporters: 'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United.
'The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad – you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here.
'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.'
Isak is understood to have undergone treatment and light training at a deserted training ground on Monday and it remains to be seen whether he will have any involvement in the club's pre-season fixtures against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend.
The striker faces clear-the-air talks with Howe, with his situation becoming seemingly more complicated by the day as a difficult transfer window threatens to spiral further out of control.
Newcastle tabled an improved club record bid for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on Monday in an effort to beat Manchester United to the punch, but developments since suggest the 22-year-old is more likely to head for Old Trafford than St James' Park.
That would represent the latest blow in a transfer window which has already seen the Magpies miss out on major targets Dean Huijsen, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, James Trafford and Liam Delap.
They have managed to recruit Nottingham Forest wide man Anthony Elanga and, on loan, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but with frontman Callum Wilson and midfielder Sean Longstaff having left, there is significant work to be done, with the start of the new season just 10 days away.
Howe was already looking for a striker before the Isak situation came to a head and, with three years remaining on the Swede's current deal – he has so far resisted the club's overtures to sign a new contract – there seems to be little prospect of the club allowing him to leave either before they have secured a replacement or for much less than their £150m valuation, having already rebuffed Liverpool's initial approach.
Meanwhile, sources on Tyneside have played down suggestions that Newcastle have tabled a bid for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, but it is understood they are maintaining an interest in the Germany international.

Liverpool targeting £87m star as back-up transfer option to Alexander Isak
Liverpool are plotting a transfer move for Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola in the event that their bid to sign top target Alexander Isak ends in failure. The Premier League champions had appeared to have got the bulk of their transfer business over the line having secured deals for Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. But the landscape changed dramatically as Isak dropped a bombshell at St James' Park, with the 25-year-old forward informing Newcastle of his desire to explore a fresh challenge elsewhere. Sensing an opportunity, Liverpool wasted little time in testing Newcastle's resolve with an opening offer of £110million – plus adds-on – for the Sweden international, which was rejected out of hand. The Magpies are believed to be holding out for a fee in the region of £150m for their star striker and the Reds are expected to return with a follow-up bid in due course. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. With speculation mounting over Isak's future, the attacker was ordered to train separately from Eddie Howe's squad and stay away from a barbecue at Newcastle's training ground on Wednesday. According to L'Equipe, Liverpool have been forced to 'consider their options' while Newcastle dig in their heels over Isak and Paris Saint-Germain forward Barcola has emerged as a potential back-up target. It's claimed Liverpool are yet to give up hope of landing Isak, but Barcola is one of two names – along with Real Madrid's Rodrygo – that 'stand out' should a move for Newcastle's talisman prove impossible. The Merseyside giants are said to have been 'following Barcola for a long time' and could take advantage of this 'loyalty' to convince the winger to move to swap Paris for Anfield. However, the report suggests PSG are unlikely to let Barcola leave for anything less than €100 million (£87m) this summer. Barcola's current contract at the French capital runs through to June 2028. The 22-year-old has scored 26 goals in 103 games since joining PSG from Lyon back in 2023, helping the club win seven pieces of silverware, including last season's Champions League trophy in that time. In May, Barcola was named in the UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year along with eight of his PSG team-mates. More Trending Bayern Munich have also registered a strong interest in Barcola in recent months, but Luis Enrique has been keen to shut down any suggestion that the France international could be on the move. 'Bradley Barcola's future? I have no doubt he'll remain our player,' the PSG head coach told reporters in June. 'We like the fact that our players are interesting to other clubs. But he's one of those young players we've been banking on. 'I expect him to play here for many more years.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Rangers vs Dundee injury news: 5 out as key trio emerge as serious doubts for Ibrox clash
Rangers will aim to pick up their first three points of the season as the entertain Dundee in the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox on Saturday (kick-off: 5.45pm). Russell Martin's side had a disappointing start to their league campaign at Motherwell last weekend, with James Tavernier's early opener cancelled out by an angled drive by Emmanuel Longelo in the closing stages of the game at Fir Park. However, their comfortable 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday has injected some much-needed positivity back into the squad. As for their visitors Dundee, it has been a difficult start to the campaign for Steven Pressley's side. Losing 2-1 at home to Hibs on opening day last week, the Dens Park outfit also struggled in the Premier Sports Cup, losing to both Alloa Atheltic and Airdrieonians as they crashed out of the competition at the group stages. Both sides will be desperate for the three points, but a number of injury issues has left three key players sweating on their inclusion at Ibrox this weekend. Ahead of the game at Ibrox, The Scotsman has all the latest team news: 1 . Cesar Garza - Dundee - OUT Took a stray boot to the head from Hibs' Jack Iredale last weekend. He completed the game, but has now been ruled out of the trip to Rangers with the injury. | SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . Mikey Moore - Rangers - DEBUT Could make his debut at Ibrox after joining from Tottenham Hotspur on loan last week. | SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . Rabbi Matondo - Rangers - OUT The Welsh winger is currently out with injury and won't be available for the visit of Dundee. Unlikely to have been part of the matchday squad anyway. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . Charlie Reilly - Dundee - OUT Has a broken shoulder and will be out for a number of weeks, unfortunately for Dundee. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group Photo Sales Related topics: Scottish Premiership

Russell Martin is riding the Rangers rollercoaster but it could still go off the rails if he isn't careful
In the space of three days, the new Gers gaffer has watched fans swing from writing off his team to hailing them as Champions League certs Last month, James Tavernier summed up his 10-year run at Rangers as like being spun around on a rollercoaster. Well it's taken Russell Martin just four games to have his senses dazed for the first time by the Govan Big Dipper. In the space of three days, the new Gers gaffer has watched fans swing from writing off his team after their Fir Park slip-up on the opening day of the season to hailing the new-look Light Blues as Champions League certs following Tuesday's much-improved win over Viktoria Plzen. But Martin will surely know already the perils of getting carried away with the peaks and troughs of management. Coaches love to wheel out that old line about not getting too high with the victories and too low with the set-backs. The trouble is that there are few places where the peaks are so exhilarating and the pits of despair so dark and depressing as Glasgow. Martin will certainly have had a taste of that during his ill-fated stint up here as a player. But this week's Euro thrill ride was his first chance to breathe in the intoxicating air that sweeps through Ibrox when Rangers max out their performance levels. It can be a dangerous mix if it's not balanced out with a dose of reality. And for Martin's team, the facts are that while the Plzen performance was a huge step in the right direction, there is still plenty of work to be done if they are to avoid spinning off the Ibrox rollercoaster rails. However, Martin has already demonstrated that he has grasped the requirement for a calm, sober approach and to keep the heid in this city - even when those around him are losing theirs. After the 3-0 win over the Czechs which has allowed Gers to firmly plant one foot in the play-off round ahead of next week's return clash in Bohemia, Martin spoke about the need to shrug off the outside noise and focus on what matters most - maintaining performances. 'I know there's a tendency up here that one thing becomes a really big thing really quickly,' he said when quizzed on his decision to drop skipper Tavernier and last year's main man Nico Raskin. 'It's not at all. Saturday will be a different team again because we have to go again with the same energy and intensity.' Having set a benchmark, Martin knows his side have to hit it again or else face a repeat of the jeers that followed them down the tunnel at Motherwell after that dismal Fir Park draw. But by taking such swift and firm action with his team selection after crashing on the curtain raiser, it looks like Martin has begun the process of winning over some of his Ibrox sceptics. For a man famed for his vegan lifestyle, Martin certainly didn't hold back as he chewed out his players after their late slip-up allowed Emmanuel Longelo to snatch a point for Well. Dropping Tavernier and Raskin was a major call but it proved to be the right one as his team swept Viktoria aside. Now he'll demand the punters cut him some slack and get on board with his vision for the future. But it will be interesting to see if the senior pair are recalled for Saturday's clash with Dundee. Three points against Steven Pressley's struggling Dark Blues is simply non-negotiable. Should Gers hit the buffers, though, it will leave Martin in a difficult position. Having made one about turn with his line-up, he'll be left looking like a flip-flopper if he's forced to do it again only days later. But get another positive result and the Ibrox support will be belting up looking to complete their Champions League thrill ride against Club Brugge or Salzburg. Let them get carried away with it all. That's what being a fan is all about. They pay their money and have every right to dream big if they want to. As for Martin? Well don't expect him to get any more excited than if he were having a sleepy shot on the Teacups.
