Russell Martin is riding the Rangers rollercoaster but it could still go off the rails if he isn't careful
Last month, James Tavernier summed up his 10-year run at Rangers as like being spun around on a rollercoaster.
Well it's taken Russell Martin just four games to have his senses dazed for the first time by the Govan Big Dipper.
In the space of three days, the new Gers gaffer has watched fans swing from writing off his team after their Fir Park slip-up on the opening day of the season to hailing the new-look Light Blues as Champions League certs following Tuesday's much-improved win over Viktoria Plzen.
But Martin will surely know already the perils of getting carried away with the peaks and troughs of management.
Coaches love to wheel out that old line about not getting too high with the victories and too low with the set-backs.
The trouble is that there are few places where the peaks are so exhilarating and the pits of despair so dark and depressing as Glasgow.
Martin will certainly have had a taste of that during his ill-fated stint up here as a player.
But this week's Euro thrill ride was his first chance to breathe in the intoxicating air that sweeps through Ibrox when Rangers max out their performance levels.
It can be a dangerous mix if it's not balanced out with a dose of reality. And for Martin's team, the facts are that while the Plzen performance was a huge step in the right direction, there is still plenty of work to be done if they are to avoid spinning off the Ibrox rollercoaster rails.
However, Martin has already demonstrated that he has grasped the requirement for a calm, sober approach and to keep the heid in this city - even when those around him are losing theirs.
After the 3-0 win over the Czechs which has allowed Gers to firmly plant one foot in the play-off round ahead of next week's return clash in Bohemia, Martin spoke about the need to shrug off the outside noise and focus on what matters most - maintaining performances.
'I know there's a tendency up here that one thing becomes a really big thing really quickly,' he said when quizzed on his decision to drop skipper Tavernier and last year's main man Nico Raskin. 'It's not at all. Saturday will be a different team again because we have to go again with the same energy and intensity.'
Having set a benchmark, Martin knows his side have to hit it again or else face a repeat of the jeers that followed them down the tunnel at Motherwell after that dismal Fir Park draw.
But by taking such swift and firm action with his team selection after crashing on the curtain raiser, it looks like Martin has begun the process of winning over some of his Ibrox sceptics.
For a man famed for his vegan lifestyle, Martin certainly didn't hold back as he chewed out his players after their late slip-up allowed Emmanuel Longelo to snatch a point for Well.
Dropping Tavernier and Raskin was a major call but it proved to be the right one as his team swept Viktoria aside. Now he'll demand the punters cut him some slack and get on board with his vision for the future.
But it will be interesting to see if the senior pair are recalled for Saturday's clash with Dundee.
Three points against Steven Pressley's struggling Dark Blues is simply non-negotiable.
Should Gers hit the buffers, though, it will leave Martin in a difficult position. Having made one about turn with his line-up, he'll be left looking like a flip-flopper if he's forced to do it again only days later.
But get another positive result and the Ibrox support will be belting up looking to complete their Champions League thrill ride against Club Brugge or Salzburg.
Let them get carried away with it all. That's what being a fan is all about. They pay their money and have every right to dream big if they want to.
As for Martin? Well don't expect him to get any more excited than if he were having a sleepy shot on the Teacups.

Benjamin Nygren delivers a Celtic masterclass as Aberdeen swept aside to continue perfect start
Celtic cruised to victory to make it two wins from two to start their Premiership title defence The Red Shed's pre-match Scottish Cup banner said There's a Light that Never Goes out. But it was another Smiths lyric that came to mind after the Dons failed to recreate their Hampden heroics against Celtic. Hoops fans haven't exactly been a happy lot of late with growing frustration over summer signings. But a couple of moments of quality in the Granite City a day after Rangers' latest stumble put smiles on faces again. Benjamin Nygren slotted a smart opener inside half an hour to undo a decent Dons start and then Reo Hatate slammed a second half stunner in off the underside of the bar to make it two wins out of two for the champions. It was a frustrating day for Jimmy Thelin and his side. Aberdeen unsettled Celts with a high-paced start. But they lacked a real cutting edge in the final third and eventually Brendan Rodgers' men got to grips and provided a lesson in lethal finishing. But the Dons' cup shine is starting to wear off. Here are our five talking points from Pittodrie... Will to win It wasn't a vintage performance from Celtic by any stretch but if there's one thing this Hoops side knows what to do is win. Aberdeen shook them out of their comfort zone early on but they refused to panic and kept their patience. Make no mistake, this was a massive victory and it piles even more pressure on their old pals across the city. Celtic dug in and waited for the chance to pounce and once they did there only looked like one winner. There's been a lot made of what Celts don't have right now – and it's true, there are areas of the squad that need bolstered. They also still have quality all over the pitch but there isn't quite the fluency yet that was witnessed in the first half of last season. Rodgers wants new faces but the countdown is on to the Champions League play-off first leg just over a week away. Celtic are getting the job done right now but the manager will want to see more of a spark in the coming weeks as they'll need to be firing on all cylinders to be sure of getting back to the big time. KT back in the groove The Celtic hero loves playing at Pittodrie. He scored twice here in his first spell and was bang on it again here, with a brilliant assist for the opener. Tierney is still building his fitness but he's already looking top notch. There is more to come though – especially with his relationship with Daizen Maeda. The pair are linking up well but there are times when they both occupy the same spaces up the touchline. Tierney would move inside at times to allow Maeda to remain wide and on other occasions they'd switch it, and it gave Aberdeen problems. The player of the year was a bit quieter than usual but the more these two play together, the stronger the understanding will become. Will Arne be back? Nygren got the nod ahead of £11m man Arne Engels for the second game on the spin – and showed what he can bring to the Celtic side. Rodgers has not hid his desperate need for more goal threat in his squad and that's what Nygren brings, perhaps more than Engels. The Belgian has plenty of his own attributes but the new man does play in a more advanced role and is constantly looking to burst into the box - like he did for his goal. He teed up the second as well and after a low key display against St Mirren, this was much more like it and it now seems he's cemented his place as the main man for that midfield role. Engels will still have a huge part to play over a long season, but you don't spend record money for a guy to sit on the bench. The shop is ticking Rodgers may be fed up talking about signings but it's difficult to ignore the giant elephant in the room. Celtic are days away from having to register their squad for the Champions League play-off clash against Slovan Bratislava or Kairat – although they can add a couple up to 24 hours before kick-off – yet they are obviously lacking in several key areas. And the late rush has again highlighted some of the issues the club has when it comes to bringing in players. It's not even about quantity. Celtic have brought in 27 players since Rodgers returned to the club in 2023 but, after five transfer windows, only four of those recruits started at Pittodrie. Parkhead chiefs can – rightly – point to the cash in the bank and the success of sales. But there have been too many misses in the market in recent times and they have to get it right this time or it will eventually catch up with them. Dons need to get creative Thelin must have been tempted to roll out his Hampden formation again after his back five frustrated the life out of Celts in the Final. So the Dons boss reverting back to his preferred line up might have been a bit of a curveball for the Hoops. It was safety first back in May but this time Thelin was much more offensive. His side pressed Celtic all over the pitch, there was an intensity and a desire to cause damage down the flanks. The plan worked a treat – until the opening goal seemed to pull the rug out from under them. Aberdeen lost belief – and they simply couldn't find a cutting edge in the final third. Striker Kusini Yengi had another day to forget and he even managed to block an effort from his own teammate before being hooked. The Dons kept plugging away and once again Nicolas Milanovic and Adil Aouchiche showed promising signs, but there is a real need for creativity or it'll be a slog this season.

TNT Sports 'pick Gareth Bale as Rio Ferdinand's replacement' after star impressed bosses
Rio Ferdinand announced he was leaving TNT Sports in May after over a decade in the role as he looks to pursue personal projects and Gareth Bale has been lined up as his successor TNT Sports has reportedly agreed a deal with former Tottenham and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale to become one of their main pundits for the season after the departure of Rio Ferdinand. The broadcaster has been on the lookout for new pundits after Ferdinand announced he would be stepping down from his recurring role in May following ten years in the job. Ferdinand has been one of their most recognisable faces on TNT during Premier League, Champions League and Europa League matches and has been an ever-present since joining in 2015 under the channel's previous name BT Sport. The Manchester United legend said he wanted to experience a new chapter and focus on his own YouTube channel Rio Ferdinand Presents, as well as his other business interests. TNT have now made their move in finding Ferdinand's long-term successor by securing five-time Champions League winner Bale as their next big-name pundit, according to the Guardian. Bale will accompany his former Tottenham team-mate Peter Crouch and Chelsea legend Joe Cole as part of TNT's line-up alongside the likes of Ally McCoist, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Owen and Steve McManaman. The former Wales winger has been seen more regularly on TNT in recent months, having been part of the coverage group for the Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United. He will be seen on TNT's Premier League and European coverage, with the broadcaster having exclusive rights to the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League this season. They have also secured a four-year deal to show FA Cup games, though the BBC will still air a total of 14 matches, including two quarter-finals, one semi-final and the final. Ferdinand explained in a statement earlier this summer that he was excited about experiencing new challenges as he revealed his decision to quit TNT. He said: "Since retiring from football it has been a privilege talking about the game I love for a decade for sports fans watching on BT Sports and TNT Sports. "The network continues to thrive with more rights than ever, and I look forward to following its progress and the exciting future that lies ahead. "As I turn the page to the next chapter. I carry with me countless memories. I'm excited about what the future holds, spending more time with my family, focusing on Rio Ferdinand Presents and my other business interests. I hope to stay connected with all of you in different capacities. Thank you once again for everything." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
