TNT Sports 'pick Gareth Bale as Rio Ferdinand's replacement' after star impressed bosses
TNT Sports has reportedly agreed a deal with former Tottenham and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale to become one of their main pundits for the season after the departure of Rio Ferdinand.
The broadcaster has been on the lookout for new pundits after Ferdinand announced he would be stepping down from his recurring role in May following ten years in the job.
Ferdinand has been one of their most recognisable faces on TNT during Premier League, Champions League and Europa League matches and has been an ever-present since joining in 2015 under the channel's previous name BT Sport.
The Manchester United legend said he wanted to experience a new chapter and focus on his own YouTube channel Rio Ferdinand Presents, as well as his other business interests.
TNT have now made their move in finding Ferdinand's long-term successor by securing five-time Champions League winner Bale as their next big-name pundit, according to the Guardian.
Bale will accompany his former Tottenham team-mate Peter Crouch and Chelsea legend Joe Cole as part of TNT's line-up alongside the likes of Ally McCoist, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Owen and Steve McManaman.
The former Wales winger has been seen more regularly on TNT in recent months, having been part of the coverage group for the Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United.
He will be seen on TNT's Premier League and European coverage, with the broadcaster having exclusive rights to the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League this season.
They have also secured a four-year deal to show FA Cup games, though the BBC will still air a total of 14 matches, including two quarter-finals, one semi-final and the final.
Ferdinand explained in a statement earlier this summer that he was excited about experiencing new challenges as he revealed his decision to quit TNT.
He said: "Since retiring from football it has been a privilege talking about the game I love for a decade for sports fans watching on BT Sports and TNT Sports.
"The network continues to thrive with more rights than ever, and I look forward to following its progress and the exciting future that lies ahead.
"As I turn the page to the next chapter. I carry with me countless memories. I'm excited about what the future holds, spending more time with my family, focusing on Rio Ferdinand Presents and my other business interests. I hope to stay connected with all of you in different capacities. Thank you once again for everything."

The Telegraph say Jackson is keen to move to St James' Park and join a Newcastle team who won the Carabao Cup last season and will be playing Champions League football this term. But Jackson faces two issues to secure his favoured move, with Newcastle only interested if they are forced to sell Alexander Isak and Chelsea ready to block his transfer unless their demands are met. Newcastle added Jackson and Benjamin Sesko to their list of striker targets after being informed by Isak that he wanted to leave and join Premier League champions Liverpool. St James' Park bosses rejected Liverpool's opening £110m bid and have told Isak he will not be sold despite the Reds preparing an improved offer. But players often get their wish and Isak could yet make the situation messy by handing in a public transfer request or simply refusing to play. 'I'm a Chelsea player,' Nicolas Jackson told DSports TV last month. 'The future belongs to God. If there are any changes, you'll know. For now, I'm focused on my preparation.' Asked whether he feared for his future at Chelsea given the 'serious competition' he will face, if he stays put, following the arrivals of Pedro and Delap, Jackson said: 'Competition? If they are pushed into a corner, Newcastle will look to raise £150m from the sale of Isak, one of the best strikers in the world. Chelsea are open to selling Jackson, who is currently training on his own, and have held talks with numerous clubs across Europe about a deal. But Chelsea do not view Jackson's sale as a must and are prepared to block his departure unless the terms are right. Chelsea paid £32m for Jackson two years ago and want to double that given he is contracted to Stamford Bridge until 2033. Jackson has reached double figures in both seasons at Chelsea but has also received criticism for his finishing and been sent off in two of his last six appearances for the club. Manchester United and Tottenham were linked with moves for Jackson earlier in the summer but have since priorities other targets. Speaking ahead of Chelsea's pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday, ex-Blues striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink urged Jackson to stay put. Van Dijk names the signing Liverpool need to make before transfer deadline
Virgil van Dijk has revealed the signing he wants Liverpool to make before the summer transfer window shuts. The Premier League champions have spent almost £300m on new signings so far this summer, bringing the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez to Anfield. The heavy investment has, for many pundits, made Liverpool firm favourites to retain the Premier League trophy they lifted in Arne Slot's first season at the club. But Liverpool were handed a slight reality check on Sunday as they were beaten by Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. The Reds led twice through new signings Hugo Ekitike and Frimpong but Crystal Palace took the contest to penalties through Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr. With the players we have we should be able to to win, to score. 'My last concern at the moment is our offensive quality. It's more… it's not a concern, but if I look at the amount of goals we've conceded in pre-season that's not of our standard.' Asked if he wanted a new defender to arrive at the club, Slot added: 'Now we've lost Jarell Quansah and that's one thing. 'But Unfortunately Conor Bradley, who's a right full-back and Joe Gomez who's a centre-back are injured. Then Ryan Gravenberch became a dad last night, he can also play really well as a centre-back. Revealed: Alejandro Garnacho's stance on possible Chelsea move after Man United set asking price for 'bomb squad' member - as Blues consider defensive signing
Alejandro Garnacho has set his mind on a move to Chelsea after Manchester United revealed their asking price. The Red Devils have been looking to offload Garnacho all summer, with the Argentine international one of the unwanted players placed into a 'bomb squad'. Garnacho was told by United boss Ruben Amorim to find a new club in May, after the winger was unhappy to start on the bench in the Europa League final. Chelsea hold strong interest in the 20-year-old, who is believed to be valued at £50million - significantly less than the £70m that United initially wanted. The Blues' hierarchy have no concerns over his character after doing their homework. In total Garnacho has played 144 games for United and has scored 26 goals, while he has provided 22 assists. He won the FA Cup with United in the 2023-24 campaign and the EFL Cup in the previous season. The Stamford Bridge club are still assessing whether to add another centre back for Enzo Maresca but intend to sell before making more buys. Nicolas Jackson remains an option for the likes of Newcastle while Christopher Nkunku is wanted by former club RB LEIPZIG as part of negotiations over Xavi Simons. Nkunku has a number of options but Chelsea would be open to reducing the fee for Simons by including the French forward in any deal. Leipzig are also keen on Chelsea's Tyrique George.
