Washington Football star awarded Big Ten Medal of Honor

USA Today5 hours ago

On Thursday afternoon, the Big Ten announced the recipients of the conference's Medal of Honor, selecting linebacker Carson Bruener as the Washington Huskies' male recipient of the award.
"The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career," the conference said of the award in a press release.
Bruener, who was named to the 2021 and 2022 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll, as well as the 2023 CSC Academic All-District Team, had a career year during Washington's first season in the Big Ten. He tallied 104 tackles and 3 interceptions on his way to an All-Big Ten Third Team selection in his final year of eligibility.
Bruener, who was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round of April's NFL draft, was one of two linebackers in the Big Ten to record over 100 tackles and three or more interceptions, alongside Iowa's Jay Higgins, who was voted as a unanimous First Team All-American.
After carrying on his father Mark's legacy at Washington, where he was voted a captain by his teammates ahead of the 2024 season, he'll now have an opportunity to do that in the NFL as well. Pittsburgh drafted the elder Bruener in the first round of the 1995 NFL draft, and the Steelers still employ him as an area scout.
The newly minted Big Ten Medal of Honor winner has a solid chance to make the 53-man roster ahead of his rookie season and at the very least, looks like he should be a contributor to coach Mike Tomlin's special teams unit.

Hurricanes Select NCAA Center Charlie Cerrato 49th Overall

The Carolina Hurricanes have selected Penn State center Charlie Cerrato with the 49th overall pick of the 2025 NHL Draft. Cerrato, 20, is a double overager, having gone through multiple drafts, but he put the time in in the NCAA to round out his game and get on scout's radar. Advertisement The 6-foot center had 42 points in 38 games last season with Penn State and was a finalist for the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Center was a big need for the Canes, so the addition of Cerrato, an older prospect, could certainly help out the pipeline.

Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill beats Noah Lyles' brother, Josephus, in 100-meter dash

It may not have been the Lyles he had in mind, but Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill still took down a Lyles on the track. The Dolphins' star wideout showed up at the ATX Sprint Classic meet in Austin, Texas on June 28 to run in the 100-meter preliminary dash, in which he finished ahead of Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles' younger brother, Josephus Lyles, with a personal-best time of 10.10 seconds. Hill finished fourth among the seven-runner heat and 0.10 seconds behind Lawrence Johnson for first place. REQUIRED READING REA: Tyreek Hill is tired of Dolphins narratives: 'Time to change who we are' The ATX Sprint Classic is the second known organized race in a matter of weeks for the 31-year-old Hill, who won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.15 seconds at the Last Chance Sprint Series meet in Los Angeles, per NBC Sports. Noted by USA TODAY, the 10.15-second finish was a personal best for Hill. The five-time All-Pro First Team selection was scheduled to run against Noah Lyles, to determine who is the "fastest man in the world" but the race was canceled on June 16. According to USA TODAY, Noah Lyles said the race was canceled due to some "complications" and "personal reasons" that "it just didn't come to pass." Hill is set to enter his 10th season in the NFL, and fourth with the Dolphins. In nine seasons in the NFL, Hill has racked up 11,098 career receiving yards and 89 career touchdowns (including rushing touchdowns). The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. Contract situation reportedly not in great place for Patriots dream trade target

The rift between the Washington Commanders and two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin isn't any closer to closing. When responding to a fan question in a mailbag article, NFL insider Albert Breer claimed things were "not in a great place" between McLaurin and the Commanders. However, he does expect the two sides to resume negotiations when the players return from their break. Whether that leads to an actual deal or not remains to be seen. Breer wrote: "They have a lot of work to do. I'd expect that work will pick up again when the league comes back from break in a few weeks. But it's still not in a great place. So we'll see what happens—there's plenty of time to get something done." The mere mention of a contract dispute involving a talented wide receiver should get the New England Patriots' attention. They are still reconstructing their roster, and the addition of a playmaker like McLaurin would be a major lift to the offense. But how far is McLaurin willing to go to get a new deal? He skipped out on mandatory minicamp. Would he skip training camp and be willing to sit out actual games for a new contract? The latter might be the only way a team like the Patriots would have any hope of a blockbuster trade. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
