Loz cause: Queensland produce another Origin boilover to stun Daley's Blues

Shibasaki was supposedly the weak link, but his performance was as inspired as his selection. The opening try was the result of him finding the time and space required to put Xavier Coates over. This was his Adam Mogg moment.
Another controversial selection, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow in the No.1 jersey, also proved a masterstroke. Chosen ahead of Broncos poster boy Reece Walsh, he proved dangerous in broken play and a rock in defence on his try line. In a rare moment of broken-field action, 'The Hammer' kept moving when the Blues had given up on the play, giving Dearden a saloon passage to glory. Later, when the Blues began the second half with purpose, he produced two try-savers in the one set.
Everyone in maroon was playing above themselves. Valentine Holmes, whose goal-kicking ensured his side kept going up in increments of six, produced a bell-ringer in defence. Nobody has previously stopped Brian To'o from close range, and yet Dearden somehow managed it. But nothing would have hurt the Blues more than watching Harry Grant burrowing over just before the break, a case of his desire to score stronger than that of the defence to stop him.
It was wave after wave of Maroon and the Blues could do nothing to stop it. Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai have produced so many magnificent moments on this very stage, but just couldn't get their game together.

Not that their forwards gave them much to play off. This was another occasion where Daley's loyalty was not rewarded. He stuck with Stefano Utoikamanu and Max King, at a time when Terrell May and Keaon Koloamatangi were making compelling cases. Would they have made a difference? We'll never know. But it only adds to the belief that the series was won before a ball was kicked, at the selection table.
It will be remembered as a boilover, the Blues again unable to finish what they started. But can it really be a boilover when it keeps happening?

Blues want to keep AFLW opener after impressive win

Coach Matthew Buck wants Carlton to keep being part of the AFLW season opener after the Blues kicked off the 10th campaign with a stylish 24-point win over Collingwood. The two teams from the AFLW's first ever game in 2017 once again opened the season as part of a celebration of that famous night at Princes Park, when Carlton won in front of a lockout crowd. Players from the inaugural match were among those in the crowd on Thursday night as Mimi Hill's midfield masterclass led the Blues to a 6.9 (45) to 3.3 (21) victory in front of 8042 fans. The Blues and Magpies also opened the fixture in 2018, 2021 and the second season of 2022. "First of all, to have the opening game here at Ikon Park, it was fantastic," Buck said. "I think we want this game moving forward. I think we had a great crowd in here. "We played a great brand of footy - crowd was up and about, that's for sure, so that was a really exciting part. "And then the kicker of it being 10 seasons on and to still have some players that played in that game, Darcy Vescio and Breann Harrington ... (still) playing so well, the story's great." Collingwood kicked the first two goals, but Carlton snagged the next four on the spin to turn the contest in their favour. The outstanding Hill racked up 32 disposals, 17 contested possessions, 424 metres gained and six clearances. "She started the game really strongly and had a great, big first half. Executed well, and got our team going," Buck said. The 22-year-old was well supported by skipper Abbie McKay and Irish goalsneak Erone Fitzpatrick (two goals), while debutant Poppy Scholz impressed. Abbie and younger sister Sophie McKay, who debuted on Thursday, famously rang Carlton's bell with their father, Blues AFL great Andrew McKay, to kick off that night in 2017. New Collingwood skipper Ruby Schleicher led from the front, laying five crunching tackles in the first quarter alone, while Brittany Bonnici (21 disposals, seven clearances, 14 tackles) and Carly Remmos (16 disposals) were busy. Last year's wooden spooners, Collingwood are already without Bri Davey, Sarah Rowe, Jordyn Allen and Mattea Breed through injury. Collingwood's Irish debutant Kellyann Hogan suffered a shoulder injury and will have scans. No.1 draft pick Ash Centra, who was on managed minutes after a hip injury, announced herself with her first disposal just before halftime, clunking a contested mark before kicking a goal with her first kick. "I was really happy for her that she kicked that goal, she's going to be a serious player," coach Sam Wright said. But it wasn't enough to spark a comeback. Instead, Carlton jagged two more goals in the third quarter, and kept Collingwood goalless for the entire second half to wrap up victory. "We just showed patches today," Wright said. "That's the really disappointing thing, not just for me but for the girls." Collingwood return to action against GWS at Victoria Park next Saturday, and Carlton face Hawthorn in Frankston that night. AFLW weekly LIVE round one: Blues, Pies name teams for season opener

Latest posts Latest posts 6.41pm Muddy field forces venue change, Pies to blood father-daughter and Next Big Thing Carlton love nothing more than beating Collingwood, but can the Blues ensure the 2024 AFLW wooden spooners and their prized No.1 draft pick endure a painful start to 2025? The AFLW season kicks off on Thursday night with Carlton hosting Collingwood at Ikon Park and West Coast taking on Gold Coast in Perth. The Eagles' match was initially set to be played at Leederville's Sullivan Logistics Stadium, but the muddied field convinced the league to switch the game to West Coast's home base at Mineral Resources Park. Collingwood finished last in 2024 with a 1-10 record, while Carlton (4-7) also struggled on the way to a 14th-placed finish. The Blues did at least get bragging rights over Collingwood last year, and will be aiming to dish out another dose of pain on Thursday night. The Magpies are tipped to be big improvers this season, and will unleash No.1 draft pick Ash Centra against the Blues. Centra, who dominated at Vic Metro and the Gippsland Power, is tipped to be the next big thing. Father-daughter recruit Violet Patterson, the daughter of Stephen Patterson, and former Docker Airlie Runnalls will also run out for the Magpies. On the other side of the country, West Coast will be out to prove the doubters wrong in Daisy Pearce's second season at the helm. The Eagles won a club-record four games last season, but most pundits are still tipping them to finish near the bottom of the ladder. West Coast will hand a debut to No.7 draft pick Lucia Painter and No.57 pick Kayla Dalgleish, with the match marking the first time Bella Lewis and Charlie Thomas lead the side as co-captains. Suns coach Rhyce Shaw has named five debutants, including Gold Coast academy graduates Havana Harris, Nyalli Milne and Mia Salisbury. Harris was the No.2 pick at last year's AFLW national draft. 6.31pm Welcome to round one of season 10 Hello and welcome to our coverage of the start of the new AFLW season – the 10th in the competition's history.
