Chandigarh administration plans to power EV charging stations with solar energy

solar energy
in EV charging infrastructure for long-term sustainability," said a UT official. Locations have been identified where solar power will be used to power EV charging stations, such as one in the IT Park where rooftop solar plants have been installed in a public parking area. Both new and old EV charging stations will be part of the pilot project.
There are currently 35 public EV charging stations, all of which are powered by the conventional electricity network. "The dependency on the conventional source of energy has to be decreased; that's the time of both the EVs and the solar power plants. Combining both these is a win-win situation for the environment. The integration of solar and EV charging stations will be one of the agenda items during the review meeting on the EV policy, which is slated for Thursday. Another major decision will be taken on the incentive framework and utilisation for promoting EVs in the city. The meeting, to be chaired by the UT chief secretary, will review the category-wise uptake of EV incentives and explore reallocation or enhancement of support where demand is higher.

The EV policy was introduced in 2022 and received a good response in the form of increased registration of EVs in the city. However, a drop has been seen since the incentives were stopped in some of the EV categories.

(CPCC) has issued a notice to the firm that set up the air purification tower at the Transport Chowk to remove it. A time of three months has been given to the firm. The 24-metre-tall tower was launched in 2021 but failed to deliver on air pollution cleanup parameters.

UT declares all PGI employment as essential
Chandigarh: UT chief secretary on Monday declared all employment at the PGI an "essential service," extending the Haryana Essential Services Act, 1974, to Chandigarh. The move prohibits any strikes by PGI staff. This is the first time the Act was invoked without an official strike notice from any union. The notification follows a 2024 public interest litigation (PIL) filed by PGI, which led to a Punjab and Haryana high court ruling on August 7 this year. The court noted that PGI services weren't previously declared essential under the East Punjab Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1947, yet it pre-emptively barred unions from future strikes or protests. The decision comes amidst an ongoing legal dispute with the PGI union president, Ashwani Munjal, who was banned from campus. The high court, while addressing Munjal's challenge, has permitted union activities only within their designated office space and explicitly forbidden any actions that would obstruct patient care or movement within the institute. According to Munjal, the recent court ruling and subsequent notification vindicate the union's decades-long position that ESMA was not previously applicable to PGI. However, he acknowledged the court's strict stance on protests, stating that any future demonstrations would be restricted to the institute's residential areas to prevent disruption of patient services. "The three decades old stand of union(s) that there is no notification imposing ESMA at PGI has been vindicated whereas PGI filed more than 6-8 CWP-PIL during 2018 to 2024 seeking orders to take action against leaders/staff under Section 6 & 7 ESMA, 1947/1968," said Munjal. Tesla, the US-based electric vehicle maker, has opened its second showroom in India — an 8,200 sq ft facility at Worldmark 3 in Delhi's Aerocity — just weeks after its debut at Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The Aerocity location marks the company's first outlet in the National Capital Region. According to documents accessed by CRE Matrix, Elon Musk's Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd, which opened its second experience centre on August 11 in Delhi's Aerocity hospitality district near Indira Gandhi International Airport, has leased the commercial space for nine years at a monthly rent of Rs 17.22 lakh. Leveraging the advantage of its location, Tesla has set up four V4 Superchargers in the basement parking. The EV manufacturer also has plans to introduce Superchargers in different locations in Delhi NCR, including Saket, Noida, and Horizon Centre. This follows the inauguration of the first supercharger in Mumbai a few days ago. The expansion plans also include a charging network setup in eight different locations, including places like Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur. The V4 Supercharger, equipped with DC chargers, is paired with four Destination Charging Stalls featuring AC chargers. With these, the newly launched Tesla Model Y can add up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes. According to the company, that's enough for five round trips between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Gateway of India. To utilise the charger, Tesla electric vehicle owners must connect their vehicles. Customers can check for availability using the Tesla app. This app also allows users to track the charging progress, get notifications during the charging process, and make payments for charging. In India, the Tesla Model Y is offered in both RWD (rear-wheel drive) and long-range RWD versions. The RWD variant starts at Rs 59.89 lakh, while the long-range model is priced at Rs 67.89 lakh. This brings the total on-road cost to Rs 61.07 lakh for the RWD version and Rs 69.15 lakh for the long-range variant. In India, purchasers of the rear-wheel drive variant of the Tesla Model Y can choose between a 60 kWh battery or a larger 75 kWh battery pack. This RWD model is equipped with a single electric motor that generates approximately 295 hp. Furthermore, the 60 kWh battery is reported to have a WLTP range of 500 km when fully charged, while the long-range model is said to provide a range of 622 km.
