Revealed: Viktor Gyokeres contacts Ruben Amorim to give final decision on £70m Manchester United move from Sporting

Daily Mail12 hours ago

Manchester United have reportedly been told Viktor Gyokeres will not be joining them from Sporting this summer - leaving Arsenal in the driving seat.
Ruben Amorim had been targeting a reunion with his former striker in his bid to rebuild his United side after they stuttered to a 15th-placed finish in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
But Amorim has now been informed that United are no longer an option for the in-demand Swede, dealing the beleaguered head coach another brutal blow.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, Gyokeres' snub was relayed through his agent on Friday, forcing United to look elsewhere in a congested market.
United are said to have made several contacts over the past week but after Arsenal saw a reported bid rebuffed, Gyokeres' interest in moving to Old Trafford faded.
The Red Devils are unable to offer European football next season and while some targets, including new man Matheus Cunha and Brentford 's Bryan Mbeumo, have not been perturbed, Gyokeres has become the latest to turn them down.
Arsenal are now the firm favourites to sign the frontman, who scored an incredible 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting last season, and a new bid is expected shortly.
Andrea Berta, Arsenal's new sporting director, is reported to have met with Sporting officials to discuss a deal for Gyokeres but the initial approach was rejected.
In an explosive row, Gyokeres was accused of 'blackmail' by Sporting after allegedly threatening to go on strike in a desperate attempt to force through a sale.
His representatives accused the club of breaking promises which would have allowed him to leave for around £60million, but Sporting president Frederico Varandas dismissed the claim and accused the player's agent of 'making the situation worse'.
The 27-year-old has a release clause worth £84m but will be able to leave for less.
Gyokeres broke his silence by posting a cryptic message on social media.
He wrote on Instagram: 'There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it false. I will speak when the time is right.'
Varandas has not taken to the threats kindly and said he will not be held to ransom.
'One thing you should already know is me better,' Varandes said, per Record. 'Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me.
'I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m + 10m (£51m + £8.5m) because I never promised him that.
'This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres, neither today nor last season.'
Gyokeres has removed any reference to Sporting on his Instagram account, having also got rid of any mention of Sweden and Nike.
The reported snub may see United turn their attention to Victor Osimhen, despite his exorbitant wage demands, and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike.
They have also been linked with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jonathan David.

Ministers to unveil 10-year plan to overhaul UK's ‘crumbling' infrastructure

Ministers are to unveil their plan to overhaul infrastructure over the next decade as Rachel Reeves said the country's schools and hospitals have been 'left to crumble'. The Treasury has promised hundreds of billions over the next decade for projects such as roads, railways and homes. According to the Treasury, the document will lay out Government plans on prioritised policy areas such as upgrading transport networks, building new homes, modernising public services such as hospitals, and assisting the transition to green energy. Ministers are pledging that at least £725 billion will be spent on infrastructure over the next 10 years. Ms Reeves said: 'The British people voted for change – and this is how we deliver it. For too long, our infrastructure – our schools and hospitals, or our roads and bridges – have been left to crumble, holding back communities and stunting economic growth. 'This was a dereliction of duty by previous governments overseeing an era of managed decline, but it ends with this one. 'We are investing in Britain's future, brick by brick, road by road and track by track. 'The strategy will rebuild people's pride in their homes, while growing the economy and putting more money in people's pockets as we deliver our Plan for Change.' The Chancellor outlined a raft of infrastructure investment as part of last week's spending review. According to Wednesday's announcement, there will be £39 billion over the next 10 years to build affordable and social housing, and spending is due to reach £4 billion a year in 2029/30. There was also a £30 billion commitment to nuclear power, including £14.2 billion to build the Sizewell C plant in Suffolk and £2.5 billion in small modular reactors, as well as £15 billion for public transport projects in England's city regions and a four-year settlement for Transport for London worth £2.2 billion. Shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride said that the Chancellor is 'desperately trying to paper over the damage she's done to the public finances'. Sir Mel added: 'With inflation up, growth down, and unemployment rising, the economy is heading in one direction and that is backwards.'

Arsenal urged to sign Man City star after £36m Rayan Cherki transfer

Arsenal have been urged to make a move for Phil Foden following Rayan Cherki's move to Manchester City. City have significantly strengthened ahead of the Club World Cup with the signings of Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Cherki arrives at City in a €42.5 million (£36.1m) deal from Lyon following an impressive season in Ligue 1. The 21-year-old also caught the eye with his first two senior appearances for France's national side last week. Cherki primarily played on the right side of Lyon's attack which raises questions over Foden's place in the City team under Pep Guardiola. City are already looking to sell Jack Grealish this summer but former Chelsea, Marseille and Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino believes Foden may also be on the move. When asked if he believes Arsenal would make a move for Grealish, Cascarino told talkSPORT: 'No, I think Foden's way more likely. 'Obviously Arteta worked at Man City with Phil Foden and for whatever reason, I'm sure we'll find out down the line, Phil Foden just hasn't been the player we know him to be this season. More Trending 'From where he was the Football Writers' Player of the Year the season before, his performances this year have just not justified that. 'But all what's happening at City and all the spending that's gone on, I wouldn't be surprised if Foden is allowed to go somewhere. 'Whether City let him go Arsenal, I don't know, but they let Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko go there. 'If Arsenal could get him, I think Arteta would really consider that, yeah.' Football fans DENIED entry into the United States for the Club World Cup - and lose £700 - amid Donald Trump crackdown

A pair of Benfica fans have been left furious and out of pocket after being denied entry to the United States ahead of the Club World Cup – as visa rejections spike amid president Donald Trump 's revived hardline stance on immigration. Two Portuguese supporters, who had booked flights and secured tickets for Benfica's opening match against Boca Juniors in Miami, have seen their travel plans shattered after being refused electronic travel authorisation without explanation. One of the fans, restaurant owner Fabio Vasques, said he had completed all the required documentation – including the ESTA application, the standard online form needed for visitors from visa-waiver countries – but was stunned when it was twice rejected. 'I filled it out three weeks ago and the answer came back negative,' Vasques told Portuguese newspaper JN. 'I tried again, and the result was the same. No justification was given.' Vasques had arranged flights from Lisbon to Miami via Madrid and paid for match tickets at the Hard Rock Stadium, where Benfica face Argentine giants Boca Juniors on Monday, June 16. He has now lost €820 (£695) in flights and $150 (£118) for the match ticket – and is hoping to claim some of it back through travel insurance. The group of four supporters had planned to stay with a friend living in Miami, but only two were cleared for entry. The other fan who was refused a visa declined to comment. The ESTA programme – officially the Electronic System for Travel Authorization – requires passport details, trip information, and US-based contacts. It costs $21 and is valid for visits of up to 90 days. But legal experts say applications are being rejected with growing frequency under Trump's return to power. 'It used to be rare for Portuguese citizens to be refused entry into the US,' said Nelson Tereso, a Portuguese-American immigration lawyer. 'But the rules have tightened significantly since Donald Trump's changes.' Those changes, first introduced during his previous presidency and now being actively enforced again, form part of a broader, controversial immigration crackdown that has dominated the build-up to this summer's Club World Cup. Riot police, ICE agents and National Guard troops have already been deployed to cities including Los Angeles and Philadelphia, where mass protests have erupted over immigration raids. Just this week, US Customs and Border Protection posted – then deleted – a message declaring they would be 'suited and booted' at Club World Cup games, sparking fears that matches could be used to identify and detain illegal immigrants. Though FIFA say they do not expect such actions at stadiums, the uncertainty has heightened anxiety for visiting fans.
