Africa's mining sector requires power reliability as a matter of survival, making it critical for companies to invest in solutions that deliver longevity and reliability, says Johan Helberg, Head of Sales for Africa at Aggreko, a provider of energy solutions.
According to the International Monetary Fund, global demand for critical minerals is set to increase significantly.
For nickel, demand will double between 2022 and 2050, cobalt will triple, and lithium will increase tenfold says the International Energy Agency – and sub-Saharan Africa has an estimated 30% of these minerals in reserves.
The region has immense potential, but realising the potential requires reliable energy solutions, particularly as mining operations across the continent continue to grapple with unstable power grids, rising energy costs, and increased pressure to meet sustainability goals, according Helberg.
As the Boston Consulting Group pointed out in its 2024 Africa Mining Outlook analysis, mining is not an easy business but its complexity is compounded by energy instability, demand for cleaner energy supplies, and costs.
The impact of unreliable energy on the mining sector is extensive. Energy supply shortages have a direct impact on a mining organisation's bottom line as companies have to invest in alternative solutions and failovers that can cost upwards of 30% of their total cash operating costs.
The industry is reliant on continuous operations to remain profitable which makes reliable power crucial to remaining operational and financially stable.
A study undertaken by Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, for example, found that loadshedding has a long-term negative impact on mining equity returns and impacts on stock viability for international investors.
The cost of energy unreliability makes a compelling case for hybrid energy solutions designed to not just mitigate the risks but to provide mining organisations with the tools they need to build resilient power infrastructure.
These hybrid systems combine traditional power sources with renewable energy and battery storage to create robust energy platforms that ensure mines can maintain operations even when the grid fails.
By blending multiple energy sources, they offer immediate fail-over energy provision within a single, intelligent system that prioritises both reliability and efficiency.
Hybrid also allows companies to distance themselves from the complexities that continue to plague power management, generation and infrastructure on the continent.
Regulatory and policy uncertainty is affecting approvals and generating uncertainty when it comes to establishing independent power solutions, and there remain financial and infrastructural challenges that inhibit investment and growth, claims Helberg.
The effectiveness of hybrid systems lies in three key pillars.
The first is that hybrid systems offer mining organisations redundancy through multiple power sources.
When one fails, others can compensate which ensures continuous operations and reduced risks and costs.
This is particularly useful in remote mining locations where grid connections are weak or non-existent.
The second is that these systems incorporate battery storage technology which acts as a buffer against power fluctuations while providing immediate access to power on demand.
Battery storage systems have the added benefit of improving overall plant efficiencies while reducing fuel consumption and maintaining power quality.
This technology can help mining operations prioritise stable power supply during peak demand periods or when renewable sources are temporarily unavailable.
Finally, hybrid brings a new level of scalability and flexibility to operations.
These are critical when considering how rapidly a mine's power needs can change thanks to both internal and external factors.
Modern hybrid systems offer mines the ability to adjust and scale energy provision and structure according to demand and to create a power infrastructure that fits their operations as they evolve.
However, implementing an effective hybrid solution needs to be strategic and well engineered, finding the optimal balance between sustainability, cost and reliability.
This balance is particularly important within the African context where operational challenges can be more pronounced due to infrastructure limitations and operating in rural locations.
Success means customising each hybrid solution to meet the unique power requirements, environmental conditions and operational constraints of each mining operation, and to partner with an energy provider that understands these constraints and knows how to develop relevant, tailored solutions, states Helberg.
The financial aspect of hybrid systems is also important. While the initial investment appears to be costly, the long-term benefits across operational stability, reduced downtime and reliable output can outweigh these.
There are financing solutions that have evolved to support the sector in its move towards sustainable and reliable energy as well.

Empower's district cooling consumption on strong demand, expansion

Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world's largest district cooling services provider, reported a 7.1 per cent increase in consumption during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The growth, measured in refrigeration tons per hour (RTh), was attributed to high occupancy rates in existing projects and the addition of new developments to the company's portfolio. Empower said in a statement that the expansion has further diversified its customer base, which includes residential, commercial, hospitality, healthcare, retail, entertainment, and other sectors. These industries are increasingly adopting energy-efficient cooling solutions to reduce carbon emissions and align with sustainability goals. The company signed 86 new contracts in the first six months of the year to supply more than 99,000 refrigeration tons (RT) to projects across Dubai. With these additions, Empower's total contracted capacity reached 1.86 million RT, while connected capacity grew to more than 1.6 million RT following an increase of approximately 38,000 RT. The number of buildings served rose to 1,684. Ahmad bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, said the company's performance underlines its role in supporting Dubai's growth and sustainability agenda. 'We are committed to delivering district cooling services of the highest quality and reliability, leveraging advanced technologies and innovations,' he said. 'Our operations support Dubai's population growth, urbanisation, and economic development, while contributing to the emirate's green future and net zero goals,' Ahmad bin Shafar said. He added that the steady rise in consumption reflects customers' trust in Empower's ability to help reduce their carbon footprint and implement sustainable practices. 'The increase in demand and expansion of our customer base is a testament to the efficiency of our services. This motivates us to maintain quality while further growing our business and partnerships for the benefit of all stakeholders,' Shafar said. Shafar noted that Empower's readiness to meet rising demand in H1 2025 was due to its state-of-the-art district cooling systems, high operational efficiency, and advanced technologies. These factors, combined with significant capacity, enabled the company to serve a diverse range of sectors effectively. Ahead of the peak summer season, Empower carried out an extensive maintenance and preparation campaign across its 88 district cooling plants and distribution networks. This ensured operational readiness to meet the seasonal surge in demand, particularly during periods of high temperatures. The measures helped maintain a comfortable indoor environment for residents and businesses across also highlighted that district cooling consumption in Dubai has increased by approximately 69 per cent between 2020 and 2024. The African Development Bank ( is supporting a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) training initiative to advance the implementation of Africa's continental development blueprint, Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want ( Through its Joint Secretariat Support Office (JSSO), the Bank provided technical and financial backing for the 5th Annual Training Workshop for African Union Member States on harnessing AI for effective monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on the Second Ten-Year Plan (2024–2033) of Agenda 2063. The five-day workshop, held in Lusaka, Zambia, was jointly organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF). The event brought together representatives from African Union Member States to strengthen their technical capacity in using AI tools and digital innovations to monitor, track, and report on the implementation of Agenda 2063. The training is part of broader efforts to enhance institutional and human capacity across the continent. Participants engaged in practical sessions on emerging AI platforms, including Ailyse, ChatGPT, Google AI Studio, Google Gemini, and Perplexity, exploring how these tools can improve data analysis, enhance decision-making, and promote evidence-based policy development in line with Agenda 2063 ( priorities. The Bank's support to the workshop reflects its broader commitment to strengthening results-based planning, monitoring, and accountability within the African Union framework, while promoting innovation and digital transformation as key enablers of Africa's development agenda. Speaking at the workshop, Abibu Tamu, Lead Programme Co-ordinator at African Development Bank Group, reaffirmed the Bank's dedication to working closely with the African Union Commission and strategic partners to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2063, particularly its Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan. 'These tools are not only revolutionizing how data is collected, analysed, and reported, they are also enabling more targeted policy interventions and efficient resource allocation,' said Tamu. The workshop also served as a platform for peer learning and knowledge exchange, with participating countries sharing innovative approaches and best practices in national development planning and results-based reporting.
