Plans for new Heysel memorial at Anfield have been unveiled by Liverpool ahead of 40th anniversary
Liverpool Football Club have unveiled plans for a new memorial to the Heysel disaster to mark the 40th anniversary of the event.
39 people were killed when a wall collapsed at the stadium in Belgium ahead of Liverpool's European Cup final against Juventus on 29 May 1985, most of them were Italian fans.
The new memorial will be named Forever Bound and will replace the current plaque at Anfield later this summer.
Jonathan Bamber, from the team at Liverpool behind the project, stresses that all effort were made to gather the views of those directly affected before going ahead:"If Juventus didn't want us to do that, or if the families of those that lost their lives didn't want us to do that, then we wouldn't have.
"I'm pleased to say that they have given...consent, if you will, and I'm also happy to say that officials from Juventus will be over at Anfield when we unveil the new memorial later this summer. "
The club says that the current memorial is situated on the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand and that its replacement will be mounted to a new location at the ground to offer a more accessible space to remember those involved, though a final decision on the new site hasn't yet been finalised.

Liverpool's rivals for Florian Wirtz have all fallen by the wayside but the Premier League champions have yet to announce the signing of the Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz will join Liverpool this summer - but fans are still being made to wait for an official announcement. However, it is understood that the delay is down to the playmaker currently being on holiday. The next formal steps are expected to take place upon Wirtz's return, after which we could see things speed up. The Reds have not been in as much of a rush as some of their Premier League rivals to get a deal over the line, as they are not involved in the Club World Cup. Wirtz is poised to become Arne Slot's third new addition this summer. Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili have already completed moves, while Liverpool have helped fund some of their summer spending by selling Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford. Liverpool's situation differs to that of Club World Cup competitors Chelsea and Manchester City. Both of those clubs made full use of the extra transfer window at the start of June, which was introduced to help teams bolster their squad for the tournament in the United States. Chelsea have added to their ranks for the Club World Cup, with Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr all part of their squad, though Estevao Willian won't join until after the tournament. Manchester City have also significantly strengthened, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri have all arrived, while keeper Marcus Bettinelli has joined from Chelsea to replace the outgoing Scott Carson. Wirtz isn't the only Bundesliga star on Liverpool's radar this summer. A deal for Hugo Ekitike is far less of a certainty, though, with Eintracht Frankfurt chief Markus Krosche standing firm on the £85m-rated striker. 'If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us. We don't have to sell Hugo,' Krosche told German media on the subject of the former Paris Saint-Germain striker, who is also of interest to Chelsea. Chelsea were unable to land the Frenchman in time for their Club World Cup campaign, with the mini transfer window for the tournament shutting on June 10. The summer window will open in earnest on Monday, giving Premier League clubs two months to bolster their squads ahead of the first round of fixtures. Mercedes' George Russell fastest in second practice for Canadian Grand Prix
Championship leader Oscar Piastri was only sixth, with Lewis Hamilton eighth, one place ahead of Max Verstappen, who had earlier finished fastest in the first running of the weekend. Russell has been one of the grid's standout performers this season with four podium finishes already under his belt, matching the tally he managed for the entire 2024 campaign. At the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday, Russell's lap of one minute and 12.123 seconds was the fastest of the day to leave Norris trailing. McLaren have dominated the campaign so far, but in practice here they appeared to be lacking the advantage which has carried them to seven wins from the nine races staged. Norris was in striking range of Russell, just 0.028sec behind the Mercedes man, but Piastri was 0.439sec off the pace, having finished the first practice session in 14th. Ferrari criticism ‘disrespectful' and harming team's chances
Vasseur's position as Ferrari team principal is under scrutiny, with reports in the Italian media suggesting prior to Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix that his job is in danger. Hamilton, who has endured a disappointing start to his Ferrari career, defended Vasseur on Thursday, insisting the Frenchman remains the right man to carry Ferrari back to the top. And, when pressed on his own future, an animated Vasseur, in his third season in charge of the Italian giants, said: 'I have to stay calm otherwise I will be reported to the stewards. 'It is not about me, because I can manage this, but it is about the people of the team and to throw their names like this is disrespectful for them and for their family. 'I don't understand the target? Perhaps it is to give s*** to the team and in this case I don't see the point. Maybe for them it is to exist? But it is clearly hurting the team. 'And when you are fighting for the championship, every detail makes the difference, and since we have arrived here we have just been talking about this (his future). And if that is their target they have reached their goal. 'I knew when I took the position as team principal I would be exposed, but for the people in the team who are working very hard to read that they will be replaced and they are useless, it is very harsh and it should be considered that these people have family, they have wives, they have kids and it is disrespectful. And I don't want to speak about it any more.' Due to the damage to his car sustained in the crash in FP1, Charles Leclerc will not take part in FP2, as the survival cell on his SF-25 needs to be replaced. The Monegasque will be unable to take part in the day's concluding session following car damage he sustained in the accident.
