Finance Ministry wants to reassess Lebanese banks' real estate, land assets

On Tuesday, the Finance Ministry issued a decision outlining the provisions related to the revaluation of real estate assets seized by banks due to their clients' failure to repay debts, as well as the revaluation of their other real estate and land assets. In this decision, the Ministry specifies the exchange rate that banks must use for these revaluations, given that the lira exchange rate to the dollar has significantly fluctuated since the onset of the Lebanese economic crisis in 2019, until achieving stability in the summer of 2023.'This mechanism, whose aim is purely fiscal and accounting in nature, is intended to adjust the accounts of Lebanese banks. It follows and complements Law No. 330 of 2024,' said Nadim Daher, a certified public accountant and member of the Lebanese Association for the Taxpayers' Rights. More on banks'...

Money laundering: Cabinet takes measures to remove Lebanon from FATF gray list

While all eyes were on the issue of Hezbollah's disarmament, for which the government set a timeline and a deadline at the end of 2025, it also took a significant step on money laundering and terrorism financing by approving, on Tuesday, Aug. 6, amendments to Law No. 44 of Nov. 24, 2015. The draft law, aimed at removing Lebanon from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) gray list, which it has been on since October 2024, was immediately referred to Parliament for review. Director of the Beirut and Mount Lebanon Water Authority dismissed from office

The director general of the Beirut and Mount Lebanon Water Authority, Jean Gebran, was dismissed from his position by the government and placed at the disposal of the Minister of Energy and Water, Joe Saddi, the latter told L'Orient-Le Jour on Wednesday. "Gebran's term ended in 2021. Since then, he had been handling day-to-day management," Saddi explained, pointing out that the board of directors' term at the institution had also expired. "Unfortunately, this kind of situation is common in the administration." When asked about immediate measures, the minister stated that "the most senior official in the hierarchy will serve as interim head of the office." He also announced his intention to soon submit to the Administrative Development Ministry and the Civil Service the list of required qualifications for the role, so that a call for applications may be launched "as soon as possible." He also expressed the wish to see a new board of directors appointed as soon as possible. Contacted by L'Orient-Le Jour, Gebran did not respond. In recent years, the Lebanese public administration has suffered from repeated political crises, the presidential vacancy, which lasted from October 2022 to January 2025, and the economic collapse, which, due to the sharp depreciation of the national currency, has greatly eroded salaries in the public sector.
