India needs better regulatory framework to attract investments: Swiss diplomat

Switzerland's State Secretary for Economic Affairs Helene Budliger Artieda has said a good regulatory framework and cut in red tape in India is important to attract Swiss investments. She said businesses here have raised concerns about bureaucratic hurdles. India and the four European nation bloc EFTA has signed a free trade agreement on March 10, 2024, which is expected to come into force from October 1. Under the pact, India has received an investment commitment of USD 100 billion in 15 years from the grouping while allowing several products such as Swiss watches, chocolates, and cut and polished diamonds at lower or zero duties. Also Read: India is a preferred place for Swiss businesses: State Secretary for Economic Affairs Live Events The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) members are Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. She said for USD 100 billion investments, "we need to have the best framework conditions and this was part of the business roundtable meeting in the presence of Minister Goyal". "That will be important that red tape will be cut as much as possible. Even in Switzerland, companies always complain that there is too much red tape. It will be very important that India creates a good framework for Swiss investments to come in," she told reporters here after meeting Goyal on June 10. The Indian minister was here on a two-day official visit to meet businesses to attract investments into India. On the issue of Swiss government suspending the most favoured nation (MFN) status clause in the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between India and Switzerland, Artieda said there has been some misunderstanding on this. "But it really has no connection whatsoever... I think it's important to know that both India and Switzerland share a double taxation treaty and that treaty is valid and that means there will not be any issue," she said. In a statement in December 2024, the Swiss government announced the suspension of the MFN clause in the DTAA between India and Switzerland, potentially impacting Swiss investments in India and leading to higher taxes on Indian companies operating in the European nation. She also said implementation of the trade agreement will help increase exports of Swiss watches and chocolates in India. Further she added that Switzerland is confident of achieving the USD 100 billion investment commitment in 15 years in India. "I am very confident we will achieve that," she said. India-EFTA two-way trade was USD 18.65 billion in 2022-23 (of this, USD 17.14 billion with Switzerland) compared to USD 27.23 billion in 2021-22. The trade deficit was USD 14.8 billion in the last fiscal year. In 2024-25, India's imports from EFTA bloc increased to USD 22.5 billion from USD 22 billion in 2023-24. Exports stood at USD 1.96 billion in the last fiscal year, up from USD 1.94 billion in 2023-24. Switzerland is the largest trading partner of India in the bloc, followed by Norway. EFTA countries are not part of the European Union (EU). It is an inter-governmental organisation for the promotion and intensification of free trade. It was founded as an alternative for states that did not wish to join the European community. India is negotiating a comprehensive free trade agreement separately with the EU -- the 27-nation bloc. India has received about USD 10.83 billion in foreign direct investments (FDI) from Switzerland between April 2000 and March 2025. It is the 12th largest investor in India. The FDI inflow was USD 931.88 million from Norway, USD 29.41 million from Iceland and USD 105.93 million from Liechtenstein during the period.

New ACs Won't Cool Below 20 Degrees Celsius? What Minister Said

New Delhi: Union Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, on Tuesday, outlined the Modi government's vision for the year 2047. He emphasised the government's significant strides in economic and infrastructural development over the past decade. During the press conference, Mr Khattar said, "The Modi govt has completed 11 years, and with the targets set, we have 22 years left to achieve them. By 2047, we aim for a Viksit Bharat, and in the coming years, we'll work multifold, building on the progress made in the last decade. Viksit Bharat means reaching a significant global stature. To boost the economy, we need to enhance trade, industries, living standards, and the power sector, which plays a crucial role in driving all sectors." Earlier, marking the occasion, the Union government also released a comprehensive e-book detailing achievements across various sectors over the past 11 years. The year 2025 marks 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. The book said that these 11 years have been dedicated to bringing about development that is inclusive, progressive, and sustainable. "The government under Prime Minister Modi has been steadfast in its commitment to creating equity and opportunity for all citizens," it added. "PM Modi has brought the politics of development - Vikasvaad into the mainstream, making it the focal point around which political discourse and policy action now revolve," it reads. Meanwhile, highlighting the growth in the power sector, Mr Khattar noted, 'If I talk about the numbers, in 2013-14, the peak demand for power was 130 gigawatts, and in 2024-25, it reached 250 gigawatts - almost double. We expect the peak demand to reach up to 270 gigawatts in 2025-26." The Union Minister also announced a pioneering initiative to standardize air conditioning temperatures. He stated, "Regarding air conditioning standards, a new provision is being implemented soon. The temperature standardization for ACs will be set between 20 degrees Celsius to 28 degrees Celsius, meaning we won't be able to cool below 20 degrees Celsius or warm above 28 degrees Celsius. This is a first-of-its-kind experiment, aiming to standardize temperature settings." This came after the persisting heatwave condition across the country.

India set to become world's third largest economy, says Joshi

Bengaluru: Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi, while addressing the media on the occasion of completion of the 11 years of achievements of the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said on Tuesday that India has now emerged as the world's fourth largest economic power. 'I have confidence that India would become world's third largest economy,' he stressed. Speaking at a press conference organised by the State BJP Office, Jagannath Bhavan, in Bengaluru on Monday, Union Minister Joshi said that it took nearly 30 to 40 years for the country to become a one trillion-dollar economy. It took about 62 to 63 years to become a two trillion-dollar economy, he added. 'As a result of stability, we have achieved more than $4 trillion from $2 trillion,' he said. He stressed that a stable government has enabled efficient governance and administration, leading to achievements in all sectors. 'The reform of the defence system is also a crucial aspect. He recalled and mocked that previously, India had a government that couldn't even decide on the post of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). Former Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony had officially said in Parliament that if basic infrastructure was developed in border areas, enemy countries would use it.' 'We have made efficient decisions from border infrastructure to the CDS,' Union Minister Joshi said. 'As a result of the CDS, 'Operation Sindoor' and subsequent operations enabled us to give a strong response to Pakistan's behaviour.' The Minister added that through the coordination of the three defence forces, it has been possible to identify nine terrorism-related locations and launch missile attacks on those very spots. Previously, all defence products were imported, the Union Minister said. 'Now, we are producing 5,000 products under 'Made in India' and 'Make in India'. For the first time in this country, we have exported arms and other products worth Rs 25,000 crore,' he added. The proportion of extreme poverty has decreased from 21 to 5 per cent, he said. He clarified that 26 crore people have come out of extreme poverty and these are not statistics from Indian agencies but from the World Bank. Union Minister Joshi said that as a result of efficient leadership and a stable government, decisive and bold steps have been taken regarding the country's defence system. He cited the recent 'Operation Sindoor' as an example. 'Terrorist activities are almost zero in areas of the country other than border regions. While such incidents are occurring in Kashmir, he said that a very strong and clear response has been given to them. Terrorists had decided to cripple India's administration through a 'Red Corridor' from Pashupati in Nepal to Tirupati.' 'Today, Naxalism in the country has decreased by 70 per cent. Our Union Home Minister has announced that Naxalism will be completely eradicated from this country by March 2026,' he said. 'Wherever Indians faced difficulties in the world, we have protected them. We succeeded in bringing back our people during the Russia-Ukraine war and the Afghanistan crisis,' he added. 'During the Covid-19 period, there were talks of millions of deaths in India and the country collapsing.' 'But, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has emerged as the fastest-growing country in the post-Covid days; it continues to do so even now,' he said. He told that India is the only country that has administered more than 240 crore vaccine doses to 140 crore people; additionally, India has also been able to export vaccines, the Union Minister said. He expressed confidence that India will soon emerge as the world's third largest economic power. 'In 2024, digital transactions increased to Rs 24 lakh crore, with the UPI accounting for 83 per cent of this,' he added. Union Minister Joshi said that former Finance Ministers had ridiculed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue of digitalisation of the country. He attributed this achievement to Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and mobile linkage. He also added that Rs 44 lakh crore are being directly transferred to beneficiaries' accounts through the direct benefit transfer scheme. He provided information on achievements made in various other sectors as well. Former Deputy Chief Minister and MP Govind Karajol, MP P.C. Mohan, Rajya Sabha member Jaggesh, Chief Whip of the Legislative Assembly Doddanagouda H. Patil, State General Secretary Nandish Reddy, State BJP Vice President Raju Gowda Nayak, Bengaluru South District President and MLA C.K. Ramamurthy, and Bengaluru Central District President Saptagiri Gowda were also present.
