Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo still keen to play in La Liga
The now 29-year-old still hasn't featured at the top level in his native country. Benfica purchased him from the Barcelona B squad in January of 2016. To the now nine-times-capped Spanish international's credit, he wasn't one of the players ready to follow Xabi in a mass exodus away from Germany's red company team. Despite the fact that his 30th birthday is rapidly approaching, Grimaldo remains patient.
'I would very much like to give it a shot in Spain,' Grimaldo told the . 'It doesn't have to be this year. It could be next year. It could be in two years. It could even be in five years.'
Grimaldo told the German paper that he still felt as if Leverkusen could accomplish great things under new head coach Erik ten Hag. One must still note that Granit Xhaka's recent move to Sunderland served as the 14th outgoing transfer fromthe club this summer.
Once keeper Lukas Hradecky's move to Monaco is confirmed, Leverkusen will officially have gotten 15 players off the squad. This number does factor loan outs into account. For example, a loan out to FC Lorient for recently acquired prospect Abdoulaye Faye serves as the 13th departure.
Irrespective of how one tallies it up, however, Leverkusen are currently operating with a 24-man-squad. At least five to six players must be added to ten Hag's selection pool in order to give the Dutch head coach a reasonable chance of competing in the league, cup, and Champions League.

Nico Williams leads Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win over Sevilla in their Spanish league opener
MADRID (AP) — With transfer rumors in the past, Nico Williams led Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win over Sevilla in its opening Spanish league match on Sunday. Williams, who had been linked with a move to Barcelona in the offseason but seems set to stay with his boyhood club, put the hosts ahead by converting a 36th-minute penalty kick. Athletic, coming off a fourth-placed finish last season, added to the lead with a goal from Maroan Sannadi in the 43rd before Sevilla rallied with goals by Dodi Lukebakio in the 60th and Lucien Agoume in the 72nd. Robert Navarro put Athletic back in front for good by scoring in the 81st. Goalkeeper Unai Simon helped the hosts secure the victory as Sevilla pressed forward to the end. It was Athletic's first match with Iñaki Williams, Nico Williams' older brother, as its main captain — a first for a Black player at the club that traditionally only fields players from Spain's northern Basque Country region or adjoining areas. Atletico Madrid, the third-placed finisher last season, played at Espanyol later Sunday. Barcelona began the defense of its Spanish league title with a comfortable 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday. Real Madrid hosts Osasuna on Tuesday Depleted Getafe wins away Getafe got off to a 2-0 win at Celta Vigo with second-half goals from Adrián Liso and Christantus Uche. The Madrid club had a depleted squad after not being able to register many of its new players because of financial fair play regulations. It was a disappointing start for Celta after a season in which it finished in the European places. On Friday, Rayo Vallecano won at Girona 3-1 and Villarreal defeated promoted Oviedo 2-0. ___ AP soccer:

Liverpool to submit new offer for star 'very keen' to join
Time is running out in the transfer window and Liverpool are still in the race to complete multiple deals. It's been a long summer, and the next two weeks are going to be even crazier than anything that has happened in the lead up to this. 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! LFC x adidas Shop the goalkeeper range today LFC x adidas Shop the new adidas range today! Liverpool are far from being done in the transfer market. Richard Hughes wanted to rebuild Arne Slot's side this summer and the final pieces in the jigsaw are still yet to be secured. The first of those jigsaw pieces is Alexander Isak. He's been Liverpool's dream target for a long time and next week we should find a resolution to the saga that has been going on for the longest time. Liverpool may add another winger to the equation as well. Although it remains to be seen whether with such little time left they can find the right target. But the other key piece of the puzzle is Marc Guehi. 🔴 Like Isak, the Crystal Palace captain has long been on Liverpool's radar. In fact, the Reds have wanted to sign him since the beginning of the summer. Guehi has one year left on his contract and it's clear that he doesn't want to extend. He wants to leave the club. Whether it's in the next two weeks or next summer, the end result will be the same. So, it's in Palace's interest to make sure that he goes this summer. At least this way they won't lose him for nothing but they can actually get compensated for making Guehi into the player he is today. Liverpool have been working on a deal to do exactly that. They haven't yet succeeded but it looks like they are going to make another push for the Crystal Palace star.
