The 2024 German Cup winners had to wait for 45 minutes when play was stopped early in the first half after heavy rain, wind and a brief hailstorm. But Leverkusen coach Erik ten Haag's competitive debut saw his team live up to their heavy favourites tag by easing past their opponents. Patrik Schick opened his account after 32 minutes. The hosts were then left with 10 men when Volklan Celiktas was sent off for a second booking in the 66th. Arthur made it 2-0 after 74 minutes before Christian Kofane added another in the 84th for the visitors and a penalty from Alejandro Grimaldo three minutes from time sealed the rout. REUTERS

Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo still keen to play in La Liga

Spanish international Alejandro Grimaldo very much remains a 'child of the Bundesliga'. It was only after joining Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer ahead of the 2023/24 campaign that the fullback/wingback truly began to blossom. Given a chance to thrive under Spanish compatriot Xabi Alonso, Grimaldo earned his first Spanish national team cap in November 2023 at the age of 27. The now 29-year-old still hasn't featured at the top level in his native country. Benfica purchased him from the Barcelona B squad in January of 2016. To the now nine-times-capped Spanish international's credit, he wasn't one of the players ready to follow Xabi in a mass exodus away from Germany's red company team. Despite the fact that his 30th birthday is rapidly approaching, Grimaldo remains patient. 'I would very much like to give it a shot in Spain,' Grimaldo told the . 'It doesn't have to be this year. It could be next year. It could be in two years. It could even be in five years.' Grimaldo told the German paper that he still felt as if Leverkusen could accomplish great things under new head coach Erik ten Hag. One must still note that Granit Xhaka's recent move to Sunderland served as the 14th outgoing transfer fromthe club this summer. Once keeper Lukas Hradecky's move to Monaco is confirmed, Leverkusen will officially have gotten 15 players off the squad. This number does factor loan outs into account. For example, a loan out to FC Lorient for recently acquired prospect Abdoulaye Faye serves as the 13th departure. Irrespective of how one tallies it up, however, Leverkusen are currently operating with a 24-man-squad. At least five to six players must be added to ten Hag's selection pool in order to give the Dutch head coach a reasonable chance of competing in the league, cup, and Champions League. GGFN |

Barcelona identify two left-back transfer targets

The board at La Liga giants Barcelona have earmarked a pair of leading options, in their search for potential left-back reinforcements with a view to next season. That's according to Diario Sport, who point towards Alejandro Grimaldo and Caio Henrique as the players in question. Advertisement The situation at left-back in Hansi Flick's Barcelona squad has of course emerged as a major talking point in the media over recent days. This comes after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that Gerard Martín has made his way onto the transfer radar of Premier League sides Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers. And though the Camp Nou brass are not actively seeking a sale, they will not stand in the way of the Spaniard, should he opt for an exit. With as much in mind, Deco has kicked into gear a search for fresh blood at left-back with a view to next season. And according to Sport, the names of two players have been circled in red by the Blaugrana: Bayer Leverkusen star Alejandro Grimaldo, and Caio Henrique of AS Monaco: Advertisement 'Barça value the signing of Grimaldo as an immediate performance addition and a profile that can offer different things in attack. Another option that Deco is considering is Monaco full-back Caio Henrique.' The latter, it is understood, would set Barcelona back an affordable sum in the region of €15 million. Conor Laird – GSFN

Barcelona weighing up €25 million offer to re-sign former La Masia defender

Alejandro Grimaldo is once again on Barcelona's radar. The former La Masia left-back, currently excelling at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, has been one of the standout performers for the German side. With a past in Barcelona's youth academy, his name has gained strength in the club's offices as a possible reinforcement to the defensive unit where Gerard Martin has not always impressed when stepping in as a backup for Alejandro Balde. Grimaldo could return to Barcelona As such, Fichajes reports that Barcelona are prepared to put forward €25 million to sign Alejandro Grimaldo in the summer – a figure Bayer Leverkusen may consider acceptable. Advertisement The former La Masia defender has found the Bundesliga to be the perfect platform to establish himself as one of the best in his position. At 29, Grimaldo is in the prime of his career and is open to returning to the club where he developed. The interest is mutual, and his familiarity with the club's environment and playing style makes him an appealing option for the coaching staff. Grimaldo on Barcelona's radars. (Photo by) In an increasingly inflated transfer market, his potential signing would represent a strategically and economically sound move for Barcelona. Alejandro Balde has excelled as the starting left-back, but Gerard Martin has not quite been able to match the same level, especially when it comes to the attacking side of things – something that Grimaldo can. Advertisement While Bayer Leverkusen are reluctant to part ways with such a key player, they are aware that the player's desire and the offer on the table could influence the decision. Xabi Alonso's potential departure from the club could also become a key factor in the Spaniard's decision. Grimaldo's camp is closely monitoring the situation, knowing that a return to Camp Nou could become a possibility in the summer transfer window.

FC Barcelona Want To Sign Bayer Leverkusen Star In The Summer: Will He Be A Good Signing?

FC Barcelona have been one of the best teams in the world this season under new manager Hansi Flick. The club have already won the Supercopa de España and the Copa Del Rey. They are also the favorites to win the La Liga, as they lead Real Madrid by four points. Meanwhile, they have qualified for the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League, where they will face Inter Milan. The club are ready to strengthen their squad even more in the summer, and one position that they might look to address is the left-back spot. Alejandro Balde has been the starter for the club, but he has struggled with injury issues. Gerrard Martin has not been at that attacking level like Balde, and hence they need a player who can compete with Balde for that spot. FC Barcelona Want To Sign Alejandro Grimaldo According to a report by Sky Deutschland, Barcelona want to bring back Alejandro Grimaldo in the summer. Bayer Leverkusen will likely demand €30-40 million to sell him in the summer. He has been one of the best left-backs in the world in recent times. If we talk about his stats, Grimaldo has conceded 26 goals and kept eight clean sheets in 29 matches in the Bundesliga 2024/2025 season. Advertisement That means when he is on the pitch, his team concedes a goal every 94 minutes. Moreover, the Leverkusen star has made 0.92 tackles and 0.60 interceptions for every 90 minutes he was on the pitch. Grimaldo is also racking up about 1.23 clearances at the same time. He has amassed a total G/A of eight so far this season. Will he be a good signing? Alejandro Grimaldo has become one of Europe's most exciting left-backs, possessing speed, smart movement, and pinpoint delivery in his game. He is a constant threat going forward, thanks to his sharp instincts and set-piece ability, but he is just as reliable at the back—reading the game well and tracking danger with confidence. Grimaldo's work rate and technical polish make him a key figure for both Bayer Leverkusen and Spain. For Barcelona, bringing Grimaldo back makes perfect sense. He knows the club's DNA, having come through La Masia, and his attacking style fits seamlessly with their philosophy. At 29, he offers maturity and consistency that could immediately lift their left side. Given the growing interest around him, Barça would be wise to move quickly before the opportunity slips away.
