Pair of Ohio State football players named to the 2025 Butkus Award preseason watch list
The two OSU players appearing among the 50 names announced are Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese. Styles is entering his final year as a Buckeye after already making a name for himself in 2024. He was second on the team with 100 tackles and really flashed at the end of the season through to the College Football Playoff championship run.
Reese could be poised for a huge breakout this year. He received high praise from the coaching staff last year before the season and showed flashes of what he could do, and now he figures to be a starter at linebacker and make good on all that athleticism and promise.
Two all-time great linebackers in Ohio State history have won the Butkus. Andy Katzenmoyer was the first Buckeye to take the award home in 1997, and that was followed up by current Ohio State linebackers coach James Laurinaitis in 2007.
The Butkus Award winner will be announced on December 10 after the semifinalists are announced on November 4, and the finalists are unveiled on November 25.

James Franklin predicts historic season for Penn State running back duo
Following the 2024 college football season, which saw Penn State reach the semifinal of the College Football Playoff, there were some questions as to which of Penn State's dynamic running back duo would return. Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen each could have explored other options, be it the NFL or a potential transfer destination to no longer share the backfield. But then a funny thing happened. Both running backs decided to run it back in Happy Valley in 2025. There was much rejoicing, especially from head coach James Franklin. "I thought one of those guys would decide to declare for the NFL and the other one would come back," Franklin said during his Big Ten football media day press conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday afternoon. He was not alone in thinking one of the two would be playing football somewhere else this fall. It may still be surprising for many to see Singleton and Allen each suiting up in the blue and white once again. Singleton and Allen each rushed for 1,000 yards last season (Allen rushed for a team-high 1,108 yards and Singleton rushed for 1,099 yards) during Penn State's playoff run. Even with the benefit of playing in a total of 16 games last season (12 regular season games, the Big Ten championship game, and three College Football Playoff games), Penn State received terrific production from its top two running backs, who have embraced playing together as a cohesive combo since their arrival as standout freshmen. Being able to bring both back for another season is nothing to overlook, especially behind Penn State's beefy offensive line. "[When] you talk about taking some of that production, we've got two great running backs," Franklin said during Big Ten media day. "You know as well as anybody Penn State from a historical standpoint at the running back position, been a ton of really good players. It's amazing to me that both Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen have a chance to be the all-time leading rushers in Penn State history, 1 and 2, and they've been sharing carries their entire career." When the 2025 season kicks off for Penn State (Aug. 30 vs. Nevada), Singleton will already be Penn State's 10th all-time leading rusher with 2,912 career rushing yards. Right behind him on the list is Allen with 2,877 career rushing yards. Penn State has seven players in program history who have rushed for at least 3,000 career yards. It could take just one game for that number to increase. And yes, the top spots on the all-time list are attainable for Singleton and Allen. Evan Royster is Penn State's all-time leading rusher with 3,932 yards. Saquon Barkley is second on the list with 3,843 career rushing yards. Will Allen and Singleton be the new kings of the Penn State rushing record book by the end of the season? It is entirely possible and would be a remarkable feat. Trio of Penn State players named to Maxwell Award watch list
With college football's conference media days in the rearview mirror and the start of the new season less than a month away, watch list season is in full bloom. With raised expectations for team success in 2025, Penn State is already being well-represented on some high-profile award watch lists this summer, including the Maxwell Award. This week saw three of Penn State's finest named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award by the Maxwell Football Club. The three players representing Penn State on the list are quarterback Drew Allar, and running backs Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton. All three offensive stars chose to return to Penn State this season to attend to some unfinished business. Allar, Singleton, and Allen give Penn State one of the top backfields in college football coming back this season and are a big reason why the Nittany Lions are being labeled a top preseason Big Ten and national championship contender. Singleton was named a preseason All-America by the Walter Camp Football Foundation for the 2025 season after a being an honorable mention All-Big Ten player on offense and special teams as a return specialist. Singleton will start the season as the nation's leading rusher returning this season with 2,912 career rushing yards and 32 career rushing touchdowns. Allen earned second-team All-Big Ten honors last season despite playing in the same backfield and splitting playing time with Singleton. Allen has rushed for 2,877 yards in his career with 24 rushing touchdowns and an average of 5.1 yards per rushing attempt. Only Singleton has more career rushing yards among players returning in 2025 across the nation. Head coach James Franklin believes these two could end their careers taking over the top two spots in the Penn State rushing record book when all is said and done. Allar was a Davey O'Brien semifinalist last season after passing for 3,327 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushing for 302 yards and six touchdowns. He will enter the 2025 season ranked sixth in all-time in Penn State history wiht 6,302 career passing yards. Allar was an honorable mention All-BigTen player a season ago after leading the Nittany Lions to the Big Ten championship game and a run to the semifinal in the College Football Playoff. The Maxwell Award is presented to the nation's college football player of the year and has been awarded annually since 1937. The Heisman Trophy may be the most notable individual award in college football, but the Maxwell Award is a high honor as well. Penn State has had seven all-time winners of the Maxwell Award, tied with Notre Dame for the most. Penn State's previous winners are Richie Lucas (1959), Glenn Ressler (1964), Mike Reid (1969), John Cappelletti (1973), Chuck Fusina (1978), Kerry Collins (1994), and Larry Johnson (2002). Last year's winner of the Maxwell Award was Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. The last Big Ten player to win the award was Penn State's Larry Johnson in 2002. Although it is worth recognizing that USC and Washington had back-to-back winners with Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr. in 2002 and 2023, respectively, as members of the Pac-12. James Franklin updates Penn State's backup QB decision
Jaxon Smolik and Ethan Grunkemeyer still competing to back up Drew Allar For the third striaght season, Penn State knows who the starting quarterback of the team will be. But one of the more important questions at the position may not be answered before the start of the season. Who will be the backup option to Drew Allar should one be needed to call into action? After losing Beau Pribula to the transfer portal just before the start of the College Football Playoff last season, Penn State's top two options behind Allar come down to redshirt sophomore Jaxon Smolik and redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer. If you are to take anything head coach James Franklin said to heart during a media day session on Saturday, the decision may linger into the season. "That one in the spring was really tightly contested," Franklin said on Saturday when meeting with the media. "This thing is, I think, going to go right down to the wire." Franklin suggested the decision on who will back up Allar could be determined on a weekly basis based on performance during the week during practices, which suggests Franklin and his staff are not comfortable making a firm call at this time and are encouraging more competition for the job. "Depending, if it finishes up like it did in the spring, it could continue throughout the entire year," Franklin said. "If it's close, if there's a gap, there's a gap. If it's close, I think the competition could go throughout the year, whoever has the best week that week is going to be the backup quarterback type of deal, just based on how close it was this spring." This is a tactic that is not new for Franklin. We have seen this strategy play out multiple times in recent seasons with the backup quarterback decision-making. In 2021, there was some indecision on who would be the backup option to cemented starter Sean Clifford with Ta'Quan Roberson and Christian Veilleux competing for the backup job. Penn State was forced to throw in Roberson in a tough spot on the road against Iowa when Clifford was knocked out of a game, and Roberson showed he was not at all ready for the spot. Later in the season, when Clifford was again banged up in a game, it was Veilleux who stepped onto the field as his replacement. Franklin explained that Veilleux was not ready for the spot earlier in the season against Iowa. Smolik, who flipped from Tulane to Penn State in 2023, missed the 2024 season due to an injury, and Grunkemeyer did not get on the field until getting a chance to relieve Allar in a win in the first round of the College Football Playoff last season against SMU. Grunkemeyer may have the more promising future outlook as the possible successor to Allar in 2026, but Franklin and his staff will not worry about what could be in 2026 when it comes to determining the best option to win on a week-to-week basis this season. Of course, the hope is that Franklin and his staff will not have to lose too much sleep over who fills in for Allar. Follow Kevin McGuire on Threads, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
