James Franklin updates Penn State's backup QB decision
For the third striaght season, Penn State knows who the starting quarterback of the team will be. But one of the more important questions at the position may not be answered before the start of the season. Who will be the backup option to Drew Allar should one be needed to call into action?
After losing Beau Pribula to the transfer portal just before the start of the College Football Playoff last season, Penn State's top two options behind Allar come down to redshirt sophomore Jaxon Smolik and redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer. If you are to take anything head coach James Franklin said to heart during a media day session on Saturday, the decision may linger into the season.
"That one in the spring was really tightly contested," Franklin said on Saturday when meeting with the media. "This thing is, I think, going to go right down to the wire."
Franklin suggested the decision on who will back up Allar could be determined on a weekly basis based on performance during the week during practices, which suggests Franklin and his staff are not comfortable making a firm call at this time and are encouraging more competition for the job.
"Depending, if it finishes up like it did in the spring, it could continue throughout the entire year," Franklin said. "If it's close, if there's a gap, there's a gap. If it's close, I think the competition could go throughout the year, whoever has the best week that week is going to be the backup quarterback type of deal, just based on how close it was this spring."
This is a tactic that is not new for Franklin. We have seen this strategy play out multiple times in recent seasons with the backup quarterback decision-making. In 2021, there was some indecision on who would be the backup option to cemented starter Sean Clifford with Ta'Quan Roberson and Christian Veilleux competing for the backup job. Penn State was forced to throw in Roberson in a tough spot on the road against Iowa when Clifford was knocked out of a game, and Roberson showed he was not at all ready for the spot. Later in the season, when Clifford was again banged up in a game, it was Veilleux who stepped onto the field as his replacement. Franklin explained that Veilleux was not ready for the spot earlier in the season against Iowa.
Smolik, who flipped from Tulane to Penn State in 2023, missed the 2024 season due to an injury, and Grunkemeyer did not get on the field until getting a chance to relieve Allar in a win in the first round of the College Football Playoff last season against SMU. Grunkemeyer may have the more promising future outlook as the possible successor to Allar in 2026, but Franklin and his staff will not worry about what could be in 2026 when it comes to determining the best option to win on a week-to-week basis this season.
Of course, the hope is that Franklin and his staff will not have to lose too much sleep over who fills in for Allar.

Beloved Steelers QB Leaves Practice Early on Tuesday
Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Will Howard left midway through the team's Tuesday training camp practice. The Ohio State product was taken back toward the locker room at St. Vincent College while sitting in the front of a cart with a trainer. The reason for the early exit is unclear. Skylar Thompson stepped in to take third-team reps behind Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph. Howard, a Steelers training camp darling, had climbed ahead of Thompson during team sessions. Howard was listed as the team's No. 3 passer on the team's initial depth chart, posted Tuesday.A sixth-round draft pick, Howard passed for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Buckeyes en route to a College Football Playoff national title last season. He also brings a mobile aspect to his game, evidenced by a big gain on a perfectly executed read option during Saturday's practice. He's been learning from Rodgers, who's heading into his 21st NFL season with four Associated Press MVP awards and a Super Bowl title under his belt. 'I've been watching him pretty much…my whole life,' Howard said early in camp. 'There's a lot of things I've picked up from him,' Howard said. 'The things he can do with the football in his hands are kind of special. You got to make the best of your situation. I think him being here, for me, is like a dream come true, learning from a guy like that.' Howard was the eighth signal-caller to hear his name called in the 2025 NFL Draft. Among those in front of him were Cleveland's Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel and Philadelphia's Kyle McCord. Steelers QB to Miss Out on Valuable Preseason Opportunities
It looks as if Will Howard won't see any action this preseason. The Pittsburgh Steelers' rookie quarterback left practice early on Tuesday, riding toward the locker room on the front of a cart. The Ohio State product's hand injury will keep him from throwing for a little while. 'Steelers rookie QB Will Howard, who banged his throwing hand in practice, suffered a fractured small bone in his hand, sources say,' NFL insider Ian Rapoport wrote on Threads. 'He's having additional tests, but it's likely no surgery is required. He's expected to miss at least 3 weeks, but more info coming.' Howard's situation provides a chance for Skylar Thompson to get some more reps after slotting in for him during the remainder of Tuesday's session. Howard had climbed above Thompson to take the No. 3 spot on the Steelers' initial depth chart, released earlier in the morning. Howard was preparing to see a good bit of action when the Steelers visit the Jacksonville Jaguars to open their preseason slate on Saturday. 'I think it was a (center-quarterback) exchange,' Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said after practice. 'But I didn't have direct eyes on it, so I'm speculating.' Howard passed for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Buckeyes last season, helping them to a College Football Playoff national championship. Steelers fans have welcomed him with open arms, cheering as he took his snaps during practices. 'I'm just trying to go out there and execute,' Howard said of the fanfare. 'I genuinely did not know (the cheers) were for me. I thought it was like Joey Porter did something on the sideline or Troy (Polamalu) or something. That's cool.'
