Steelers QB to Miss Out on Valuable Preseason Opportunities
The Ohio State product's hand injury will keep him from throwing for a little while.
'Steelers rookie QB Will Howard, who banged his throwing hand in practice, suffered a fractured small bone in his hand, sources say,' NFL insider Ian Rapoport wrote on Threads. 'He's having additional tests, but it's likely no surgery is required. He's expected to miss at least 3 weeks, but more info coming.'
Howard's situation provides a chance for Skylar Thompson to get some more reps after slotting in for him during the remainder of Tuesday's session. Howard had climbed above Thompson to take the No. 3 spot on the Steelers' initial depth chart, released earlier in the morning.
Howard was preparing to see a good bit of action when the Steelers visit the Jacksonville Jaguars to open their preseason slate on Saturday.
'I think it was a (center-quarterback) exchange,' Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said after practice. 'But I didn't have direct eyes on it, so I'm speculating.'
Howard passed for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Buckeyes last season, helping them to a College Football Playoff national championship. Steelers fans have welcomed him with open arms, cheering as he took his snaps during practices.
'I'm just trying to go out there and execute,' Howard said of the fanfare. 'I genuinely did not know (the cheers) were for me. I thought it was like Joey Porter did something on the sideline or Troy (Polamalu) or something. That's cool.'

10 notes on 10 Steelers from Week One of the preseason
On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on the strength of their passing offense. We have gone over the game and after breaking down the obvious like the quarterbacks, we have 10 notes on 10 Steelers who stood out for us and not always for good reasons. 1 - RB Kaleb Johnson Johnson's yards before contact were negative thanks to how awful the Steelers offensive line did run blocking so we give Johnson a pass this week. 2 - WR Max Hurleman At this point, we are crunching the numbers, trying to figure out how to get Hurleman on the 53-man roster. 3 - WR Roc Taylor Like Hurleman, Roc Taylor made a strong statement on Saturday and is really going to push guys like Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek for the last spot on the depth chart. 4 - OT Troy Fautanu The run blocking by the Steelers offensive line was down overall but that's not on Troy Fautanu. Not only did he not give up a pressure on 24 passing snaps, he was the only offensive lineman consistently doing his job on run plays. 5 - DT Yahya Black Black only played 10 snaps but it was enough for us to be convinced he needs a heavier workload next week. Black's lateral agility for a man his size is remarkable. 6 - EDGE Jack Sawyer We aren't going to overreact but this wasn't a great debut for Sawyer as a pass rusher. We are hopeful he will play with more confidence next week. 7 - EDGE DeMarvin Leal Time is running out for Leal to show he can be a 275-pound edge rusher. He was a tweener coming out of college and he's still a tweener. 8 - S Juan Thornhill Thornhill came out and decided to be the tone setter and you can see he's embraced his role as the new starting free safety. 9 - S Chuck Clark The Steelers gave Clark plenty of opportunity to make a statement on Saturday, but he's still a work in progress to get on the right page with this defense. 10 - LB Payton Wilson Wilson only played 12 snaps on Saturday but still found his way to four tackles.
